Social State Definition And The Economic Control Systems Product, David Randall Jenkins Jan 2007

Social State Definition And The Economic Control Systems Product, David Randall Jenkins

David Randall Jenkins

Professor Arrow formulated his social state definition in terms of each individual's consumption versus factors of production. Ancient philosophers understood impossibility-resolved social choice theory derived welfare models involve reflexive economic form hierarchical structures where the individual is implicit. The scripture writers also concluded theory construction and empirical research are not reflexive such that empirical research undertaken in the absence of an essential theoretical nexus is illusionary. Therefore, empirical aggregation surrogates are unable to competently effect Arrovian impossibility end-runs. The scripture writers' reference ethics based aggregation mechanics articulate impossibility-resolved (social welfare function formulation: social state definition) transitivity.

Adaptation, Metafiction, Self-Creation, Julie Levinson Jan 2007

Adaptation, Metafiction, Self-Creation, Julie Levinson

Julie Levinson

When the film Adaptation was released, the critical reception generally lauded it for the originality of its narrative construction and criticized it for its disappointingly conventional ending. “Adaptation, Metafiction, Self-Creation,” refutes those critical assessments by placing the film in historical and theoretical contexts. The film conforms to a type of reflexive storytelling that I call “self-creating narrative”: works that document, as part of their diegesis, their own artistic coming-into-being. Using the narratological taxonomy of Gerard Genette, the article examines Adaptation side by side with such earlier exemplars of the form as 8 1/2 and Providence, which likewise engage in metafictive …

Oromummaa, Asafa Jalata Jan 2007

Oromummaa, Asafa Jalata

Asafa Jalata

This book is a collection of my nineteen selected speeches that I delivered to different Oromo and other communities, organizations, and scholarly conferences in North America between 2000 and 2007. Since these speeches were delivered at different times to different audiences, the reader observes some similar central patterns in some of the chapters. In order to maintain the originality of the speeches, I have decided not to change them. From outset I declare that I am an integral part of the process I am exploring and critiquing in this book as a member of the educated Oromo group who have …

Oko Sako (Oka And Sako): Wawashii Woman In The Kyōgen Oko And Sako, Minae Yamamoto Savas Jan 2007

Oko Sako (Oka And Sako): Wawashii Woman In The Kyōgen Oko And Sako, Minae Yamamoto Savas

Minae Yamamoto Savas

In this play, a peasant called Oko accuses Sako, another farmer, of letting his cow graze on Oko's grass. While Oko's wawashii (bold) wife offers to help him rehearse his lawsuit, she secretly hopes to dissuade her husband from bringing it to the local steward. The rehearsal satirizes the oppressive feudal justice system as the domineering wife and steward role overlap.

The Definition Of A “Soldier”, Toby S. Jenkins Jan 2007

The Definition Of A “Soldier”, Toby S. Jenkins

Toby S Jenkins

Black men have been placed under the social radar and microscope for centuries in an attempt to better define what it is, means, or feels to be a black man. Everything from their genetic makeup to their mental psyche has been examined, defined, and discussed. And through it all, black women have offered up their own critical thoughts, words of support, and opinions on the dilemma of being black and male in America. The views have changed as much as the experiences that our men have faced—from enslavement to imprisonment, from no education to mis-education, from predatory practices leading to …

Expanding Preferential Treatment Under The Record Rental Amendment Beyond The Music Industry, Ryan G. Vacca Jan 2007

Expanding Preferential Treatment Under The Record Rental Amendment Beyond The Music Industry, Ryan G. Vacca

Ryan G. Vacca

This Article explores the development of copyright law’s first sale doctrine and the Record Rental Amendment (RRA) in light of the Sixth Circuit’s interpretation of the RRA in Brilliance Audio, Inc. v. Haights Cross Communications, Inc. This Article does not take issue with the court’s conclusion, but instead uses the differing conclusions of the majority and dissent to illustrate that the RRA exception is in need of Congressional clarification. This Article also examines whether the Record Rental Amendment should be amended to include audiobooks and other non-musical works, concluding that they should. The author then proposes two alternative amendments to …
