This report highlights a collaborative, phenomenological study undertaken by 2 faculty researchers from different undergraduate music therapy training programs in the Midwest. A total of 9 junior and senior music therapy students from both programs (5 from one & 4 from another) were involved in short-term group music therapy, participating in three 2-hour sessions during the course of an academic semester. Sessions were facilitated by the researchers, both of whom were board certified music therapists. Undergraduate Music Therapy Students’ Experiences In Short-Term Group Music Therapy, Nancy Jackson, Susan Gardstrom

Education of undergraduate music therapy students poses numerous difficulties because of the need for personal development, as well as specific clinical and musical skills. This collaborative qualitative study examined the potential benefits of students’ participation as clients in short-term personal music therapy. Qualitative analysis of participants’ writings revealed the impact on the students’ personal and professional development, and raised questions about potential curricular changes.

The primary purpose of this study was to gather information in order to understand if and how various modalities of personal therapy are employed with undergraduate music therapy students in the United State. AMTA degree program coordinators were asked about 3 therapy modalities, in particular: verbal therapy, music therapy, and expressive arts therapies (excluding music therapy). It was predicted that less than a quarter of the respondents would indicate that personal therapy of any modality was required in their undergraduate curricula, but that a larger percentage would indicate that it was encouraged.
