Because Shakespeare holds such a prominent position in English-speaking world culture, it is important to open and expand access to understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of Shakespeare to a constituency as wide-ranging as possible. To achieve this goal, Service-Learning students in ENGL 345 – Shakespeare’s Tragedies and Histories in Spring 2010 partnered with Lowell Elementary School for a fun and educational after-school program Over six weeks undergraduates in ENGL 345 taught a group of fourth through sixth graders about Shakespeare primarily through directing the elementary-school students in a shortened version of The Tempest

The purpose of my service project was to help the ‘English only’ teacher interact with and teach the bilingual or ‘Spanish only’ speakers at Head Start. I also got to spend a lot of time with the children. ¡Muy divertido! The learning goals of my service project with Head Start include: to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Hispanic language and culture, to serve the Boise community, to know the community and interact with people from other countries, and finally to help create an international community where different cultures and languages can thrive together

The purpose of HEP is to help migrant and seasonal farm workers who have worked in an agricultural job for at least 75 hours, and their children, who are 16years or older and have at least an 8th grade skill level in reading and math, to enhance socioeconomic mobility through education by providing an opportunity to take advantage of federally-sponsored GED training and tests. HEP also provides suitable lodging, meals, and health care for the duration of the student’s time in the residential program, as many of the students would otherwise be unable to attend. Project Goals: Attend volunteer training and provide feedback on training methods and supplemental resources. Learning goals: In their assessment, students looked at ways of incorporating material from class on second language acquisition into training materials. The ultimate goal of this project was to help ensure that future ELC volunteers feel prepared and well-equipped to provide the best support for ELC staff when volunteering.
