"If We Had The Word": Ingeborg Bachmann, Views And Reviews (Book Review), Kathrin Bower
"If We Had The Word": Ingeborg Bachmann, Views And Reviews (Book Review), Kathrin Bower
Kathrin M. Bower
This collection of essays grew from a 1996 symposium held at SUNY-Binghamton to commemorate what would have been Ingeborg Bachmann's seventieth birthday. Gisela Brinker-Gabler, the symposium organizer, provides a brief foreword to the volume. Brinker-Gabler begins by articulating parallels between Ingeborg Bachmann and the poet Sylvia Plath, both in terms of their poetic prowess and their fascination with death, but the foreword is primarily a short literary biography of Bachmann, noting the highlights in her career and the difference in reception between her poetry and prose. While the foreword does serve to situate Bachmann as a writer, it does not …
Neighbours And Strangers: Literary And Cultural Relations In Germany, Austria And Central Europe Since 1989 (Book Review), Kathrin Bower
Neighbours And Strangers: Literary And Cultural Relations In Germany, Austria And Central Europe Since 1989 (Book Review), Kathrin Bower
Kathrin M. Bower
In this collection of fifteen papers inspired by a 2002 conference held in Salford, England, the reader will find wide variations on the broadly stated theme of neighbors and strangers in the European context. Pulling together the diversity of essays is the main problem with the volume and one that the editors have done little to alleviate in their haphazard introduction. While they allude to the unification of Germany as the impetus and point of departure for the anthology, they offer no coherent argument for the selection and sequence of the essays included in the book. The reader is left …

[Review Of The Book Icons Of Democracy: American Leaders As Heroes, Aristocrats, Dissenters And Democrats], Nick Salvatore
[Review Of The Book Icons Of Democracy: American Leaders As Heroes, Aristocrats, Dissenters And Democrats], Nick Salvatore
Nick Salvatore
[Excerpt] Icons of Democracy is a welcome change from the rather arid, often quantified analyses of political leadership so prevalent in academic writing. Well read in both primary and secondary sources, Miroff has deeply grounded his ideas in the rich historical context. In addition, he carefully chose his subjects and drew from their experiences central themes which, in divergent fashion, they also held in common. The resulting collective biography engages and challenges the reader. While partial to leaders in the dissenting tradition (they are "our true subversives and at times our truest democrats"), Miroff consistently points to the complexity of …
[Review Of The Book Making A New Deal: Industrial Workers In Chicago, 1919-1939], Nick Salvatore
[Review Of The Book Making A New Deal: Industrial Workers In Chicago, 1919-1939], Nick Salvatore
Nick Salvatore
[Excerpt] This is a superb book. Lizabeth Cohen has attempted nothing less than a major reinterpretation of how industrial workers became deeply involved with the union organizing drives of the 1930s. Rather than focusing on external stimuli such as governmental actions, Cohen explores in great detail the ways in which changes in working people's own attitudes allowed them to be participants in, indeed makers of, their New Deal. Her themes are critically important, broadly conceived, and explored with imagination and verve. Her extensive research matches her intellectual vision, and she sensitively uses such diverse sources as advertising agency memoranda, early …
Review Of Renato Raffaelli, Alba Tontini (Ed.), Lecturae Plautinae Sarsinares Xii. Miles Gloriosus: (Sarsina, 27 Settembre 2008). Ludus Philologiae. Urbino: Edizioni Quattroventi, 2009. Pp. 160. Isbn 9788839208729. €20.00 (Pb)., Christopher Bungard
Christopher Bungard
With its twelfth volume, the Lecturae Plautinae Sarsinates, directed by R. Raffaelli and A. Tontino, have continued their substantial contribution to Plautine scholarship, focusing this volume on Plautus’ Miles Gloriosus. For those interested in Vorbilder, Nachleben, and historical linguistics, the first four essays will be of interest. For those interested in interpretation of the play itself, the final three essays will be of interest, particularly the contributions of Stockert and Rafaelli.
