Extra-Textual, Intra-Textual, And Neo-Baroque Constructions Of Violent Space In Three Women Writers From The Southern Cone, Gail Bulman Dec 2015

Extra-Textual, Intra-Textual, And Neo-Baroque Constructions Of Violent Space In Three Women Writers From The Southern Cone, Gail Bulman

Gail A. Bulman

The purpose of this dissertation is to use feminist theories, semiotics, and current theories on the Neo-Baroque, to analyze the way in which three 1970's and 1980's Latin American women writers from the Southern Cone configure artistic space, in order to reveal how their representations of space reflect the poly-dimensional nature of violence. In each of the texts presented, (Informacion para extranjeros by Argentine Griselda Gambaro, Una pasion prohibida by Uruguayan Cristina Peri Rossi, and Por la patria by Chilean Diamela Eltit), the intra-textual space carries extra-textual signification in its representation of the local political and cultural violence of the …

The White Bed Of Desire In A.S. Byatt's Possession, Jennifer Jeffers Dec 2015

The White Bed Of Desire In A.S. Byatt's Possession, Jennifer Jeffers

Jennifer M. Jeffers

The British novelist A. S. Byatt frequently writes about art and color theory in her fiction. In Still Life (1985) Byatt intentionally saturates her text with musings on art and color; bordering on the didactic, she devotes long passages to Van Gogh's chromatics and individual characters' theories on art. With The Matisse Stories (1996) her discussion moves into the theory of complementary colors in the story “Art Work,” through the painter Robin Dennison. Painting for Robin is “a series of problems, really, inexhaustible problems, of light and color, you know” (70). In the 1990 Booker Prize-winning novel Possession: A Romance, …

Two Notes On P. Merton Ii 100, James Keenan Dec 2015

Two Notes On P. Merton Ii 100, James Keenan

James G. Keenan

The papyrus now accessible as P. Merton II 100 was first edited by H.I. Bell as "A Requisitioning Order for Taxes in Kind," in Aegyptus, fasc.2 (1951) (Raccolta Vitelli), pp. 307-12, and subsequently reprinted as SB VI 9232. The document, written during the emirate of Jordanes (ca. A.D. 699-704), is dated 23 Phaophi of the thirteen indiction (21 October 699). Difficulties of decipherment are owed to the colors of the inks that were used (they fade into the color of papyrus itself), the frequent use of abbreviation, and the extreme cursiveness of the second hand (lines 5-8). Nevertheless, some improvements …

The Essential Functions Of A Plotinian Soul, Damian Caluori Dec 2015

The Essential Functions Of A Plotinian Soul, Damian Caluori

Damian Caluori

In reading Plotinus one might get the impression that the essential functions of a Plotinian soul are very similar to those of an Aristotelian soul. Plotinus talks of such vegetative functions as growth, nurture and reproduction. He discusses such animal functions as sense perception, imagination and memory. And he attributes such functions as reasoning, judging and having opinions to the soul. In Plotinus' Psychology, Blumenthal bases his whole discussion of the soul on an analysis of these functions. He concludes that Plotinus 'saw the soul's activities as the functions of a series of faculties which were basically those of Aristotle' …

Rhetoric And Platonism In Fifth-Century Athens, Damian Caluori Dec 2015

Rhetoric And Platonism In Fifth-Century Athens, Damian Caluori

Damian Caluori

There are reasons to believe that relations between Platonism and rhetoric in Athens during the fifth century CE were rather close. Both were major pillars of pagan culture, or paideia, and thus essential elements in the defense of paganism against increasingly powerful and repressive Christian opponents. It is easy to imagine that, under these circumstances, paganism was closing ranks and that philosophers and orators united in their efforts to save traditional ways and values. Although there is no doubt some truth to this view, a closer look reveals that the relations between philosophy and rhetoric were rather more complicated. In …
