Four Ways Of Seeing: Art Looks At Science, And Vice Versa, Peter Adams Jun 2008

Four Ways Of Seeing: Art Looks At Science, And Vice Versa, Peter Adams

Peter C.S. Adams

From the mythmaking of primitive cave painters and the rigorous observations of Renaissance painters sprang the two great ways of seeing the world: science and art. Until modern times, the two were often at odds, as each felt the other was trying to stifle it and dominate the conversation. But as the left and right hemispheres of the brain represent rationality and creativity and cannot function normally without massive interconnectedness, so can science and art only give us a complete picture of our world by working together. This paper will explore various ways in which science and art have interacted.

Charles Weijer

Surgical devices are often marketed before there is good evidence of their safety and effectiveness. Our paper discusses the ethical issues associated with the early marketing and use of new surgical devices from the perspectives of the six groups most concerned. Health Canada, which is responsible for licensing new surgical devices, should amend their requirements to include rigorous clinical trials that provide data on effectiveness and safety for each new product before it is marketed. Industry should comply with all Health Canada requirements to obtain licenses for new products. Until Health Canada requires effectiveness and safety data, industry should cooperate …

Benchmarking With The Best, Felicity Mcgregor May 2008

Benchmarking With The Best, Felicity Mcgregor

Felicity McGregor

Measuring the performance of individual library services and processes is now well developed; it is more difficult, however, to identify best practice or to measure the overall organisational performance of libraries. In the absence of relevant sector-wide benchmarks, the University of Wollongong Library (UoW) adopted the principles outlined in the Australian Quality Council’s (AQC) Business Excellence Framework and then benchmarked its performance by applying for, and subsequently winning, an Australian Business Excellence Award. The Awards process requires evidence on all aspects of organisational performance: leadership and innovation, strategy and planning processes, data, information and knowledge, people, customer and market focus, …

Performance Measures, Benchmarking And Value, Felicity Mcgregor May 2008

Performance Measures, Benchmarking And Value, Felicity Mcgregor

Felicity McGregor

[Extract] The announcement of the establishment of a Quality Audit Agency to evaluate the performance of universities, signalled an inevitable expansion of the incipient culture of measurement and evaluation in Australian universities. Those who consider that quality, and its associated tenets of measurement and evaluation are of dubious value, will be constrained to demonstrate goal achievement through whichever mechanisms are deemed appropriate by the Agency. Otherwise, they may face an uncertain funding future. Although the details of the audit process are not yet clear, there will be a single national body which will be responsible for overseeing independent external quality …

Wollongong: From Bunker To Beauty, Felicity Mcgregor May 2008

Wollongong: From Bunker To Beauty, Felicity Mcgregor

Felicity McGregor

A transformation is taking place at the University of Wollongong Library. An extension to the building is adding 2,000 square metres of space across three floors and visually changing the façade from a heavy bunker to a light-filled, transparent space. As the extension project progresses, the impact on both the exterior and interior are increasingly evident. The pebblecrete slabs that were suspended over the top floor and appeared to press the brick walls into the ground have been removed. A number of small shrubs and trees obscuring the building have gone. A soaring portico roof now provides shade for the …

Body Doubles, Babel's Voices: Katie Mitchell's Iphigenia At Aulis And The Theatre Of Sacrifice, Kim Solga Apr 2008

Body Doubles, Babel's Voices: Katie Mitchell's Iphigenia At Aulis And The Theatre Of Sacrifice, Kim Solga

Kim Solga

What happens to a body when circumstance demands it enact its own forgetting? What reaction in turn does a body in the process of violent self-erasure prompt in its spectators? These and related questions propel my investigation of Katie Mitchell's 2004 National Theatre production of Euripedes' Iphigenia at Aulis. Mitchell's chilling representation of Iphigenia's final moments, during which the young girl speaks with apparently patriotic fervour her willingness to be murdered for her nation's sake, embeds the very loss that such a performance of sacrifice typically elides. The result: two bodies collide on stage before our eyes - the compliant, …

Honey Bees: A History, Tammy Horn Apr 2008

Honey Bees: A History, Tammy Horn

Tammy Horn

Long known as the angels of agriculture, honey bees have received global attention due to losses attributed to a combination of factors: Colony Collapse Disorder, mites, deforestation and industrial agriculture. Honey bees provide pollination for crops, orchards and flowers; honey and wax for cosmetics, food and medicinal-religious objects; and inspiration to artists, architects and scientists.

The Line, The Crack, And The Possibility Of Architecture: Figure, Ground, Feminist Performance, Kim Solga Mar 2008

The Line, The Crack, And The Possibility Of Architecture: Figure, Ground, Feminist Performance, Kim Solga

Kim Solga

How and where do architecture and performance collide? Theatre studies has been, over the course of the last decade, increasingly interested in the relationship between stage and space; that inter- est, however, has primarily been figured by marrying theories of human geography with studies of theatrical performance. “The Line, the Crack, and the Possibility of Architecture” asks what it might mean to explore the spaces of performance through the lens of another plastic art—the art of building—and investigates what the discourses of architecture theory, both classical and (post)modern, might have to say to those of us who study the vicissitudes …

On The Topic Of Pseudoclefts, Ileana Paul Mar 2008

On The Topic Of Pseudoclefts, Ileana Paul

Ileana Paul

This paper presents arguments in favor of a pseudocleft analysis of a certain class of sentences in Malagasy, despite the lack of an overt wh-element. It is shown that voice morphology on the verb creates an operator-variable relationship much like the one created by wh-movement in free relatives in English and other languages. The bulk of the paper argues in favor of an inversion analysis of specificational pseudoclefts in Malagasy: a predicate DP is fronted to a topic position from within a small clause constituent. Moreover, it is shown that the same inversion occurs in equative and specificational sentences in …

Doing Away With Morgan's Canon, Simon Fitzpatrick Mar 2008

Doing Away With Morgan's Canon, Simon Fitzpatrick

Simon Fitzpatrick

Morgan's canon is a very widely endorsed methodological principle in animal psychology, believed to be vital for a rigorous, scientific approach to the study of animal cognition. In contrast I argue that Morgan's canon is unjustified, pernicious and unnecessary. I identify two main versions of the canon and show that they both suffer from very serious problems. I then suggest an alternative methodological principle that captures all of the genuine methodological benefits that Morgan's canon can bring but suffers from none of its problems.

Avoiding Certain Frustration, Reflection, And The Cable Guy Paradox, Brian Kierland, Bradley Monton, Samuel Ruhmkorff Mar 2008

Avoiding Certain Frustration, Reflection, And The Cable Guy Paradox, Brian Kierland, Bradley Monton, Samuel Ruhmkorff

Brian Kierland

We discuss the cable guy paradox, both as an object of interest in its own right and as something which can be used to illuminate certain issues in the theories of rational choice and belief. We argue that a crucial principle—The Avoid Certain Frustration (ACF) principle—which is used in stating the paradox is false, thus resolving the paradox. We also explain how the paradox gives us new insight into issues related to the Reflection principle. Our general thesis is that principles that base your current opinions on your current opinions about your future opinions need not make reference to the …

Citizen Of Which Republic? Foreigners And The Construction Of National Citizenship In Central America, 1823-1845, Jordana Dym Mar 2008

Citizen Of Which Republic? Foreigners And The Construction Of National Citizenship In Central America, 1823-1845, Jordana Dym

Jordana Dym

The law of the South American states with reference to nationality of origin remains to be noticed. Sir Alexander Cockburn, Nationality: or, The law relating to subjects and aliens, considered with a view to future legislation (London, W. Ridgway, 1869), 17. In December 1841, voters in Sonsonate (El Salvador) elected Frenchman and long-time resident, Luis Bertrand Save, as their alcalde, or municipal judge, for 1842. The governor insisted that Save accept the office. However, Save convinced El Salvador's president that he should not serve since he was not a citizen of the country, citing French and Salvadoran laws to back …

Being, Aevum, And Nothingness: Edith Stein On Death And Dying, Antonio Calcagno Feb 2008

Being, Aevum, And Nothingness: Edith Stein On Death And Dying, Antonio Calcagno

Antonio Calcagno

This article seeks to present for the first time a more systematic account of Edith Stein’s views on death and dying. First, I will argue that death does not necessarily lead us to an understanding of our earthly existence as aevum, that is, an experience of time between eternity and finite temporality. We always bear the mark of our finitude, including our finite temporality, even when we exist within the eternal mind of God. To claim otherwise, is to make identical our eternity with God’s eternity, thereby undermining the traditional Scholastic argument, which Stein holds, that there is no real …

Discovering Sexuality In Dostoevsky (Paperback), Susanne Fusso Jan 2008

Discovering Sexuality In Dostoevsky (Paperback), Susanne Fusso

Susanne Fusso

Most discussions of sexuality in the work of Dostoevsky have been framed in Freudian terms. But Dostoevsky himself wrote about sexuality from a decidedly pre-Freudian perspective. By looking at the views of human sexual development that were available in Dostoevsky's time and that he, an avid reader and observer of his own social context, absorbed and reacted to, Susanne Fusso gives us a new way of understanding a critical element in the writing of one of Russia's literary masters. Beyond discovering Dostoevsky's own views and representations of sexuality as a reflection of his culture and his time, Fusso also explores …

It Works For Me As A Scholar-Teacher: Shared Tips For The Classroom, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Dec 2007

It Works For Me As A Scholar-Teacher: Shared Tips For The Classroom, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

The authors’ purpose in this book is to provide “a collection of practical tips drawn from real-life experiences.” We believe this particular book is so important to share with today’s audience, we almost called it Take My Book, Please! On the other hand, does the scholarly world need another book on the importance of scholarship? Further, if the book standard for tenure is slowly disappearing because so many academic presses are closing, why would we bother to write one? And recent studies show that new faculty members consider university employment a 9:00-5:00 job, so doesn’t that leave out time for …
