Hemingway's Literary Sisters: The Author Through The Eyes Of Women Writers, Rena Sanderson Dec 2001

Hemingway's Literary Sisters: The Author Through The Eyes Of Women Writers, Rena Sanderson

Irene (Rena) M. Sanderson

Ernest Hemingway's complex and ambivalent relationship with Gertrude Stein has been widely discussed. Relatively little has been said, however, about Hemingway's relationship with other women writers. Among those who played important roles in Hemingway's life and works were his wives, all of whom except Hadley Richardson were professional writers (and even Hadley proofread his stories before he submitted them). In addition, a number of other women writers participated in the making of Hemingway's public image and reputation. Three such women were Dorothy Parker, Lillian Hellman, and Hemingway's third wife, Martha Gellhorn. The way these three responded to Hemingway and incidentally …

Teaching Urban Planning And Public Policy: Developing A "City As Classroom" Model At Two New England Colleges, Steven Corey, Mark Motte Dec 2001

Teaching Urban Planning And Public Policy: Developing A "City As Classroom" Model At Two New England Colleges, Steven Corey, Mark Motte

Steven H. Corey

Emerging trends in teaching urban geography, city planning, and public policy studies resonate with calls from think tanks, research associations, and most recently the Carnegie Foundation, for undergraduate education to be "reinvented" as interdisciplinary, inquiry-based, and experiential. This paper outlines a model that offers some success with inquiry-based learning strategies in the geography program at Rhode Island College and the urban studies program at Worcester State College. In grappling with the knotty problems of contemporary urban development/redevelopment policies in Providence and Worcester (downtown revitalization, infrastructure improvements, retail/commercial strategies, industrial restructuring, shifting labor markets, neighborhood planning, housing development, etc.), our students …

Music For All:Pupils' Perceptions Of The Gcse Music Examination In One South Wales Secondary School, Ruth Wright Dec 2001

Music For All:Pupils' Perceptions Of The Gcse Music Examination In One South Wales Secondary School, Ruth Wright

Ruth Wright Dr

This article originated from a research project examining pupils' perceptions of the GCSE Music examination (for pupils aged 15–16) in one large secondary school in the United Kingdom. The research explored the hypothesis that pupils considered it necessary to have additional instrumental or vocal tuition outside class music lessons in order to secure a high grade in the examination. The research also hypothesised that, despite the egalitarian philosophy underpinning the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examination system, the music course was still viewed by pupils as being élitist. It was concluded that although there were some very positive comments …

Kit Carson And The 'Americanization' Of New Mexico, Barton Barbour

Barton H. Barbour

This article appeared as a lead article in the New Mexico Historical Review, 77:2 (Spring 2002), and as one of a dozen biographies in Richard W. Etulain's New Mexico Lives: Profiles and Historical Stories (2002). Carson's contemporary fame, and his mythical and historical legacies offer a great deal of material that helps readers understand not only Kit Carson's real life, but the Santa Fe Trade, fur traders and Indian-White relations, and Anglo-Hispanic relations during the decades spanning 1820 and 1870. For a sample, see the following introductory paragraph: Dateline: Fort Lyon, Colorado Territory, May 1868 Kit Carson, the mountain man, …

A Critical Appraisal Of Protections For Aboriginal Communities In Biomedical Research, Charles Weijer, James Anderson Dec 2001

A Critical Appraisal Of Protections For Aboriginal Communities In Biomedical Research, Charles Weijer, James Anderson

Charles Weijer

As scientists target communities for research into the etiology, especially the genetic determinants of common diseases, there have been calls for the protection of communities. This paper identifies the distinct characteristics of aboriginal communities and their implications for research in these communities. It also contends that the framework in the Belmont Report is inadequate in this context and suggests a fourth principle of respect for communities. To explore how such a principle might be specified and operationalized, it reviews existing guidelines for protecting aboriginal communities and points out problems with these guidelines and areas for further work.

It Works For Me, Too! More Shared Tips For Effective Teaching, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Dec 2001

It Works For Me, Too! More Shared Tips For Effective Teaching, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

In the four years since our first book on teaching, we have noticed both on our campus and around the country a new emphasis on the instructor as teacher (vs. scholar). We have read books on the subject, attended the prestigious Lilly Conference, helped establish a Teaching & Learning Center on our campus (Hal served as its first director), and written for new journals focusing on pedagogy. It Works For Me, Too! is our contribution to the Renaissance in College Pedagogy, our attempt to fuel this brightening interest in effective teaching. Like its predecessor, this book is a compilation of …
