Some of the challenges it presents such as curriculum style, teacher qualifications, assessment and accountability, pacing, and developing thinking skills for a theory-based course are discussed. I also offer activities with accompanying worksheets and graphic organizers that may assist teachers in meeting these challenges. The activities include tariffs, a run on the bank, monopolies, and recessions as an introduction to basic economic principles that are important in teaching U.S. History. A set of graphic organizers on The Civil War demonstrates how economics …

Umaine Professors Study The Link Between Racial Prejudice And The Punishment Of Criminals, Gladys Ganiel Jun 2002

Umaine Professors Study The Link Between Racial Prejudice And The Punishment Of Criminals, Gladys Ganiel

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

During the past 30 years, the criminal justice system in the United States has meted out increasingly harsher punishments for offenders, so that today the U.S. imprisonment rate is the highest in the Western industrial world. Research by two University of Maine sociology professors suggests that racial prejudice against African-Americans is one of the underlying factors in the creation of public policies favoring crime control.

Book Review: General Crook And The Western Frontier By Charles M. Robinson Iii, Michael L. Tate

History Faculty Publications

Few frontier military officers could claim a more varied and significant combat career during the second half of the nineteenth century than George Crook. Beginning with service as a young lieutenant in the Rogue River War and the Yakima War of the 1850s, he learned quickly about the weaknesses of an army that suffered from underfunding, congressional neglect, low morale, and petty bickering among its officer corps. Despite his commanding troops during the next three decades in some of the most celebrated Indian wars of the Great Plains and Southwest, he also developed an empathy for his adversaries who suffered …

Dispatches From Lincoln’S White House: The Anonymous Civil War Journalism Of Presidential Secretary William O. Stoddard, William O. Stoddard May 2002

Dispatches From Lincoln’S White House: The Anonymous Civil War Journalism Of Presidential Secretary William O. Stoddard, William O. Stoddard

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

William O. Stoddard's memoirs as President Abraham Lincoln's third secretary reveal a perspective of the president rarely viewed. In this collection of 120 weekly dispatches submitted to the New York Examiner under the pseudonym "Illinois," Stoddard sheds new light on Lincoln and his era.

These documents provide commentary on Lincoln's personal circumstances as well as events in Washington and on military, diplomatic, economic, and political developments. Although historians at times differ with Stoddard's accounts, he offers valuable descriptions of Lincoln, insight into the president's thoughts, and commentary on contemporary opinion.
