Wlbz Radio Station Records, 1926-2015, Special Collections, Raymond H. Fogler Library, University Of Maine

Finding Aids

WLBZ radio evolved from the passion of Thompson Guernsey, an amateur radio buff from Dover-Foxcroft who began experimenting with radio at the age of thirteen. As noted in a piece written by Fred Thompson in The History of Broadcasting in Maine: the First Fifty Years, Guernsey, considered by some to be an eccentric genius, began with homemade receivers and transmitters and an amateur license granted in 1921. After graduating from the University of Maine in 1926, Guernsey began operating WLBZ as a commercial broadcast station from Dover-Foxcroft.

In 1928, he moved his studio to the back of the Andrews …

Plot To Kill The President: A Novel, Arthur Scott, Brian Heath Jan 2023

Plot To Kill The President: A Novel, Arthur Scott, Brian Heath

Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions

I was always skeptical of The Warren Report as were countless other Americans over the decades.

I was reenergized to look more closely at November 22,1963, by a chance encounter with Brian heath, a JFK aficionado, who had made some startling discoveries about the assassination. He had studied meticulously the Nix film and concluded that the fatal shot came from within the presidential limousine from the driver, William Greer. Similarly, that many of JFK’s cabinet members consisted of former OSS spooks, who dominated the CIA, and were major spokesman for the national security state and America’s global dominance.

They saw …

Dreamers before the Mast chronicles the epic story of Regina Maris, a tall ship built, owned, sailed, and loved from 1908 to 2000 by people who had big dreams of ships and the sea — and who made those dreams come true. Each chapter of Dreamers before the Mast recounts the hard work and hair-raising adventures experienced by Regina’s owners, captains, crew members, scientists, and students, often in their own words through extensive interviews and excerpts from diaries and journals, letters, and the ship’s logs. American Dream, American Nightmare? Students Respond To White Christian Nationalism, Kaya Bottmeyer, Charolette Moody, Gina Dudley, Alexander Kulin, Madeleine Larson, Jason Halpern, George Faithful Jan 2023

American Dream, American Nightmare? Students Respond To White Christian Nationalism, Kaya Bottmeyer, Charolette Moody, Gina Dudley, Alexander Kulin, Madeleine Larson, Jason Halpern, George Faithful

Social Justice | Student Perspectives on Religious Nationalism

What happened in the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021? Students enrolled in Dominican’s “Religious Nationalism” course have responded based on their own perspectives. The title of this volume is a question. Some of authors answer it “yes,” some “no,” others “maybe.” We as a nation have witnessed a resurgence of religious nationalism. It isn’t always white (depending on how you define “white”) and it isn’t always Christian (same), but that particular racial-religious intersection plays an especially prominent role, sometimes more, sometimes less, in what follows.

Community Resilience In Vermont After The 2023 Flooding Event, Alex Poniz Jan 2023

Community Resilience In Vermont After The 2023 Flooding Event, Alex Poniz

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Between July 10th-11th 2023 Vermont experienced catastrophic flooding after receiving prolonged heavy rainfall of up to 9” over 48 hrs. Damage from the 2023 event rivals the historic destruction of Hurricane Irene in 2011 and is exceeded only by the Great Vermont Flood of 1927, an event predating modern flood controls. We collected oral histories from Vermonters to better understand their lived experience of the flood and its impacts, and identifed common themes related to community and individual resilience.
