A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

1991 Summer Theatre

A revival of this bawdy musical hit. It is madcap farce at its best. Based on the Roman play by Plautus this modern adaptation with music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Stephen Sondheim combines the hilarious nonsense of vaudeville with a variety of musical memorables such as Comedy Tonight and Everybody Ought to Have a Maid. Laughs for the entire family!

Uncommon Women & Others, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

1990-1991 Season

Uncommon Women and Others (1977), is the first play by noted 20th-century American playwright Wendy Wasserstein. Alumnae of Mount Holyoke College (Wasserstein's alma mater) meet for lunch one day in 1978 and talk about their time together in college. The play is thus a series of flashbacks to the 1972-1973 school year as seven seniors and one freshman try to "discover themselves" in the wake of second-wave feminism.

The Matchmaker May 1991

The Matchmaker

Taylor Theatre Playbills

The playbill for Taylor University’s Spring 1991 performance of The Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder.

Before the world fell in love with "Hello, Dolly!", Thornton Wilder’s uproarious play "The Matchmaker" introduced Ms. Dolly Gallagher Levi: a cunning, crafty, and thoroughly modern woman who knows a good catch when she sees one. When the wealthy Horace Vandergelder hires matchmaker Ms. Levi to find him a wife, Dolly doesn't need to look far to find his perfect mate. While Dolly is “arranging things” for Mr. Vandergelder, the young, hopeless romantics of Yonkers reap the rewards of Dolly’s generosity.

Man Of La Mancha, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department May 1991

Man Of La Mancha, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

1990-1991 Season

Man of La Mancha is a 1965 musical with a book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion, and music by Mitch Leigh. It tells the story of the "mad" knight Don Quixote as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition. The work is not and does not pretend to be a faithful rendition of either Cervantes' life or of Don Quixote.

The Fantasticks, directed by Ron Cameron, is noted as the longest running musical in the world, opening in 1960 and playing to over 10,000 Off-Broadway performances. Anton Chekhov: Three Vaudevilles Program [1991], University Of Southern Maine Department Of Theatre

Programs 1990-1991 Season

By Anton Chekhov

Directed by Yvonne Shaffer

These short early comedies, (Chekhov himself described them as "vaudevilles"), though light-hearted and indeed often farcical, nevertheless give evidence of Anton Chekhov's perception of our precarious grip on our destinies, a perception which led him to explore the troubled, darkly comic world of his mature work. Adapted here by Yvonne Shafer, they reveal a quizzically amused sympathy for the life of the Russian moujik and the petit bourgeois, expressed in deft] y controlled episodes that range in mood from the melancholy to the wildly funny. They afford a valuable and rare opportunity to …

Impersonation Speaking, Robert D. Kendall

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The catalog description of SPC 337 reads like this: "The study of First Person Monologs as a form of pub!ic speaking. Research and development of an historical character/speaker for public presentation." Allow me to expand on this capsulized description. This course attempts to teach students the process of developing and delivering a public speech that some historical character of their choosing could have given at some point in that person/s life. Through a series of carefully planned assignments, one building upon the other, each student researches the life, character and times of a histor-ical figure: writes an original speech for …

Dierdre: A Soap Opera, For Singers, Dancers, Players, Electronic Sounds And Projected Images, James Schwall Apr 1991

Dierdre: A Soap Opera, For Singers, Dancers, Players, Electronic Sounds And Projected Images, James Schwall

Masters Theses

Dierdre: A Soap Opera is a chamber opera in one act, with dance, and takes about an hour to perform. There are six singing parts which may be performed by five singers. Two parts are for sopranos or mezzos, two for baritone, and one is designated tenor. All have fairly easy ranges. The piece also requires four percussionists and a pianist. Several interludes, called "breaks," are intended for modern dance. One of these breaks and the overture are for taped electronic music, realized by the composer. The libretto, also by the composer, involves the employees and regulars at a somewhat …

What Glorious Times They Had – Nellie Mcclung, March 27 – April 20, 1991, Theatre Sheridan

Theatre Sheridan Productions

Surely there has never been a spring more filled with portent in the history of the young Canadian Dominion than this of 1916. Across the sea in Europe, the Great War continues to be waged-while here at home, events less sanguine but hardly less explosive, nor in any way less crucial to the future of the infant nation, seem even now to be building to a climax.

On January 27th last (1916), in consequence of the indefatigable efforts of a tiny but valiant group of remarkable women, our sister province of Manitoba became the first in all of Canada to …

Much Ado About Nothing, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Mar 1991

Much Ado About Nothing, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

1990-1991 Season

Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy by William Shakespeare thought to have been written in 1598 and 1599, as Shakespeare was approaching the middle of his career. The play was included in the First Folio, published in 1623.

By means of "noting" (which, in Shakespeare's day, sounded similar to "nothing" as in the play's title, and which means gossip, rumour, and overhearing), Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into confessing their love for each other, and Claudio is tricked into rejecting Hero at the altar on the erroneous belief that she has been unfaithful. At the end, Benedick and Beatrice …
