C.A.P.S., Sydney Merritt-Brown

Senior Projects Spring 2023

This project focuses on representing three generations of Caribbean women through the lens of beauty and hair care. Together, we collaborate to document our hair stories, a vessel to reclaim our identity, nationhood, and culture. Through this lens, we authentically re-envision ourselves as we move towards becoming the faces of a new generation while simultaneously honoring the past through how memory is in the fabric of our clothes, the recipes we consume, and the hair that we care for, style, and protect within the Caribbean Archive.

Artist Statement

I make work that attempts to liberate the body beyond the confines that society has prescribed to it. I am interested in the manifestations of the internal human; illuminating the internal voice that is often silenced, persuaded, and deemed as illegitimate, despite the fact that it might be the most true. As a mixed Afro Latina woman, my own identity and existence as a visible body is constantly at the mercy of those who I surround myself with, where my external ambiguity falls a victim to constant mislabeling. As a result, the fluidity of my appearance in racial …

Lust Gluttony Greed, Abigail Adele Matthews Adler Jan 2016

Lust Gluttony Greed, Abigail Adele Matthews Adler

Senior Projects Spring 2016

I make theater because it is social; a dialogical tool rooted in the interface between performer and audience. As an artist I seek community, a remedy for passivity, and movement between destruction and reification. I incorporate voice, text, sound, video, movement, politics, gender, spectacle, and tomfoolery. I believe in the necessity of others in process, practice, and performance, and I pursue joy in all I do.

This project is the product of surprise. In February 2015, the Theater Department announced that Senior Projects would need to be collaborative. In response to this challenge, the 2016 Theatre Makers met to figure …

Senior Projects Spring 2016

José Chardiet

April 2016

C Reverse for Care is organized in a five part care cycle: Wash, Rinse, Spin, Dry, and Wear. The piece is a study in reversibility. It is an effort to learn, to understand what it means to care, and an effort to try to achieve reciprocal balance in any relationship, whether it is with a family member, a partner, or a friend.

The staging is designed for circular movement, suggesting a cycle that is repeated after completion. The spacial structure of the piece is based on the shape of the white ginger lily, the national flower …

The New Audience Theory, Isabel Shuttleworth Bump Jan 2016

The New Audience Theory, Isabel Shuttleworth Bump

Senior Projects Spring 2016

According to The New Audience Theory, audience members take information from the media and use their own identity and experiences to make sense of that information. Interpretations will always be slightly different from person to person; everyone has different experiences and cannot think in the same way as another. I know that truly understanding another person by seeing the world as they do is completely impossible. But, I want to try.

I have spoken to Annie for hours. The words you hear in this installation are such a small percentage of the conversations that I have had with her over …
