Wilde Bühne: An Exploration Into The Revolutionary Potential Of Art, Antonia Salathe Jan 2023

Wilde Bühne: An Exploration Into The Revolutionary Potential Of Art, Antonia Salathe

Senior Projects Spring 2023

You will often hear it said that art does not belong in the space of the political.

Politics is practical, and yet we cry over legislative losses and march in the streets when we are seared by flames of indignation. We paint murals over boarded-up windows, film history as it happens, and go to the club after a long day at work. We sketch lovingly the faces of those lost senselessly, we sing to the rooftops when all hope seems lost, and we speak poems like pounding hammers when no one is willing to listen. We scratch verses into foam …

Staging Soviet Ideals: The Birth Of Soviet Ballet And Its Reception 1927-1932, Abigail Rose Crosby Jan 2023

Staging Soviet Ideals: The Birth Of Soviet Ballet And Its Reception 1927-1932, Abigail Rose Crosby

Senior Projects Spring 2023

This project explores ballet’s development as a Soviet art form through the critical reviews of three early Soviet ballets: The Golden Age (Zolotoy vek, 1930), The Bolt (Bolt, 1931), and Flames of Paris (Plamya parizha, 1932). Prior to the implementation of Socialist Realism, which set parameters for all cultural production within the Soviet Union from 1934 onward, definitions of Soviet culture were often unclear. As a result, it was often difficult for ballet makers to know what to produce and given the art form’s deep aristocratic roots, pressure to innovate in order to fit into the Soviet cultural project was …

C.A.P.S., Sydney Merritt-Brown

Senior Projects Spring 2023

This project focuses on representing three generations of Caribbean women through the lens of beauty and hair care. Together, we collaborate to document our hair stories, a vessel to reclaim our identity, nationhood, and culture. Through this lens, we authentically re-envision ourselves as we move towards becoming the faces of a new generation while simultaneously honoring the past through how memory is in the fabric of our clothes, the recipes we consume, and the hair that we care for, style, and protect within the Caribbean Archive.

Entering The Dance Input/Output Machine, Antonio James Martinez Jan 2023

Entering The Dance Input/Output Machine, Antonio James Martinez

Senior Projects Spring 2023

My goal for this project is to provide an exploration into the intersection of Computer Science and Dance. Although there are many avenues of exploration at this intersection, I decide to focus on the topic of movement, specifically the idea of movement data. With this idea, we break it apart into two subtopics: movement input and output. Throughout this project, we mainly focus on the side of input, uncovering the nuance of movement language and the information that comes with it to understand the process of motion capture. We also demonstrate the use of movement input and how others may …

Audience Patina: An Enmeshment Of Architecture And Theater, Alison R. Kane

Senior Projects Spring 2022

This senior project entitled Audience Patina: An Enmeshment of Architecture and Theater explores the interconnections and juxtapositions between environmental topographies, liminal space, and imaginary dreamscapes. The project consists of interdisciplinary research used to create a large-scale installation piece, as well as the direction of the play The Stars Come Out at Night. This installation was created in conversation with the play, which was written by fellow theater department senior, Emily Kaufman-Bell. The play is the essential work that briefed the design around a dreamlike environmental imagery. The design and research explore how space and bodies communicate with each other …

Impressions On The American Cowboy: End Of The Trail, Ghost Town And Rough Men, Jude Edmund Markey-Smith

Senior Projects Spring 2022

“Impressions on the American Cowboy” seeks to consider, expose, and investigate the symbol of the cowboy in our culture–– in all of its twisted romance. After reflecting on my personal experiences as well as various historical texts and works of western fiction, I set out to make my own western-themed work. My intention is to comment and explore the so-called “man problem” across disciplines in live performed time and space. This work attempts to think critically about how and why cowboy culture has persisted, and to delve into this particular and troubling projection of masculine consciousness.

Accommodation And Coping In Medieval Catholic England: A Historical Dramaturgy Casebook For The Chester Mystery Cycle’S Play 14: Christ At The House Of Simon The Leper, Christ And The Moneylenders, And Judas’ Plot, Andrew J. Roberge Jan 2022

Roberge

Senior Projects Spring 2022

In this historically focused dramaturgy casebook for the medieval Catholic Chester Mystery Cycle's Play 14, Christ at the House of Simon the Leper, Christ and the Moneylenders, and Judas’ Plot, I offer suggestions for Play 14's production as it might have appeared in the cycle's final year of performance, 1575. I contextualize and grapple with the play's antisemitisms, and also offer a brief history of antisemitism in medieval Europe. I also analyze Play 14 and the Chester Mystery Cycle for their rhetorical appeals to the medieval vernacular language, contexts, and events, as well as their anachronistic temporal and geographic …
