Memories And Autobiography Of Jens Lind, Jens Lind Jan 1990

Memories And Autobiography Of Jens Lind, Jens Lind

The Bridge

I don't know if I can write anything that will read any different from thousands of other immigrants that came to make their home in the U.S.A.

The reason I came was mostly because of economic conditions. Another was adventure and restlessness which many young people suffer from in our days, too.

I was born close to the east coast in Jutland, Denmark, September 30, 1892. We were eight in the family: our parents, three brothers and three sisters and, of course, poor as church mice, like thousands of others.

Niels E. Hansen: Plant Explorer, Harald Jensen

The Bridge

At the age of seventeen, Niels Ebbesen Hansen enrolled at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, where he met Professor J. L. Budd, head of the Department of Horticulture and a creative and inspiring person. This meeting with Professor Budd eventually caused young Hansen to major in horticulture, and plant exploration and development became his lifework. He graduated in 1887 from Iowa State and for the next four years worked in large commercial nurseries in Iowa. This experience, not only supplemented his previous theoretical training in college but gave him an invaluable insight into the problems of northwestern horticulture.

A Danish Socialist In Capitalist Chicago, George R. Nielsen Jan 1990

A Danish Socialist In Capitalist Chicago, George R. Nielsen

The Bridge

The vast majority of the 200,000 Danes who migrated to America in the 19th century came as ordinary, anonymous people looking for work and willing to live within the American system. Louis Pio, on the other hand, was wellknown in Denmark, especially to the Copenhagen police and businessmen, and came to America with a mission to reform society in both Europe and America. In America, however, Pio never gained the status that he had held in Denmark and his attempts at social reform were unsuccessful. Yet, in spite of Pia's lackluster life in the United States, scholars, for good reason, …

Sylvia Pio, A Danish-American Livewire, Kristian Hvidt, J. R. Christianson, Editor And Translator Jan 1990

Sylvia Pio, A Danish-American Livewire, Kristian Hvidt, J. R. Christianson, Editor And Translator

The Bridge

This is the story of an unusual Danish-American woman, Sylvia Pio, who was born 1876 in Copenhagen, grew up in Chicago, and died 1932 in Hellerup, a suburb of her native city.

Her childhood in Chicago had a complicated background. Sylvia was the daughter of a famous figure in Danish political history, Louis Pio, who founded the Danish Socialist Party in Copenhagen in 1871. After serving in the army during the Schleswig-Holstein war of 1864, he had entered the Copenhagen postal service, where he is said to have constructed the first red Danish mailbox of the type still in use.

The Rescue Of The Danish Jews: Moral Courage Under Stress, Leo Goldberger, Editor, Gerald Rasmussen, Reviewer

The Bridge

We enthusiastically recommend a new book about the rescue of the Danish Jews during the Second World War. In fact, that is the name of the book: Rescue of the Danish Jews: Moral Courage under Stress. It was edited by Leo Goldberger and published by the New York University Press in 1987.

Several books have been written about this event, but they are not well known. These include monographs, first hand accounts and at least one historical novel.

Professionalization In Comparative Perspective: Germany, Mcclelland

History Faculty Publications

critical social-history consciousness has abandoned to some degree the old notion that modern "professions" in the Anglo-Saxon sense could not "really" exist in Central Europe because of the heavy and early bureaucratization and/or the persistence of "feudal" or at least Stand (etat) traditions. Instead, most accept the notion of a process of dialogue between independent professions and bureaucratic authority.

Incidental Effects Of Church Activity On Development, Landscapes And Culture: An Example From Tonga, Sosaia Hakaumotu Naulu Jan 1990

Incidental Effects Of Church Activity On Development, Landscapes And Culture: An Example From Tonga, Sosaia Hakaumotu Naulu

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of religious bodies upon the economy, landscape and culture of developing countries is a topic that needs further study. Intuitively, mission work in such lands would seems to have some impact but the actual conditions and changes are not carefully defined. This thesis seeks to describe one instance, the effect of the LDS Church upon Tonga. Here the Church is a fairly recent entrant into the land and its effects may readily be seen.

The LDS Church was found to play a modest role in the economy and a much greater role in changing landscapes. It is seen …

A Mormon Melting Pot: Ethnicity Acculturation In Cedar City, Utah, 1880-1915, Vida Leigh

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studies the ethnicity of the five ethnic groups found in Cedar City, Utah, during the 1880-to-1915 period. Those five groups were originally sent by Brigham Young to found the Iron Mission, as a two-fold project: (1) developing the iron mining industry, and (2) building a united community of Latter-day Saints.

The demographics, kinship, ties, marriage patterns, occupations, wealth, and elites in church government and society have been examined in detail through US censuses, Iron county assessment records, marriage records, Cedar City municipal records, LDS church records, diaries, histories, and personal histories. By comparing all the ethnic groups within …

The Level And Determinants Of Burnout Of Mormon Mothers In A Utah Suburban Town, Christina Mordock Jan 1990

The Level And Determinants Of Burnout Of Mormon Mothers In A Utah Suburban Town, Christina Mordock

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine burnout in Mormon mothers in a suburban Utah town. Specifically the amount and some determinants of burnout among these Mormon women was studied. A random sample of 266 Mormon mothers completed a questionnaire and a modified version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) which consisted of three subscales, (Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment), and two categories in each subscale (Frequency and Intensity). The subjects scored in the moderately burned out category in each subscale. Significant relationships were found between the amount of burnout and the following: the age of the mother, …

Variation Procedures In Northern Ewe Song, V. Kofi Agawu Jan 1990

Variation Procedures In Northern Ewe Song, V. Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

The major organizational principle of Northern Ewe song is one shared by numerous African, Oriental, and European musical traditions: a small number of models (variously described as "basic shapes," "archetypes," "background structures," "basic designs," "core patterns," "deep structures") is transformed in a wide variety of ways during performance. Variation takes place on different hierarchic levels both within and between songs and includes practically all of a song's dimensions (rhythm, interval, register, contour, harmony, and so on). This principle, although widely demonstrated in the literature on African song (see, among others, Jones 1976; Kauffman 1984; Schmidt 1984; and Erlmann 1985), is …

Assessing The Early Effects Of Emerging Trade Blocs: Research Agendas For North America And Europe., Janos L. Wimpffen, Russell B. Capelle Jr, Ann M. Oberhauser, James E. Randall, Barney L. Warf

Ann Oberhauser

General agreement exists about at least two aspects of the formation and development of the trade blocs of North America and Europe. It is agreed, first, that the codified terms of the Canada-U.s. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Single European Act (referred to here as Europe 1992) are formaI manifestations of certain inexorable processes and, second, that enactment of the agreements has consequences beyond the intentions of the framers. Other than these basic postulates, one is unlikely to find considerable agreement among researchers. Differences in theoretical outlooks, access to and interpretation of data, and national perspectives aIl conspire to …
