The Celestial Element In The Sacrament Of The Altar In Contemporary Lutheran Theology (1945-1963), Donald Veitengruber May 1964

The Celestial Element In The Sacrament Of The Altar In Contemporary Lutheran Theology (1945-1963), Donald Veitengruber

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper does not propose to defend the use of the term "celestial element." The debate which has grown up around the Arnoldshain Theses shows us that we ought not stake the Lutheran or New Testament theology of the Sacrament of the Altar on the use of this term. And yet, it is a good term, for it takes us immediately to the heart of that which separates the Lutheran from the Reformed tradition. Do we only receive bread and wine in the Sacrament, or do we receive something more? This "something" is the "celestial element."

Motivation In Paul's Epistles, M. H. Grumm Apr 1964

Motivation In Paul's Epistles, M. H. Grumm

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is no pastor worthy of the name who does not keep the perennial question of motivation at least simmering at the back of the stove. A problem not only of pastors but of teachers, parents, psychiatrists, salesmen, advertising men, and politicians is this: How do you move people? move them not only to do something but to want to do something? The pastor, of course, is concerned with more than a job by which he earns his bread and butter and with more than a specific job for a specific aim, for this office covers the whole range of …

The Theology Of Self-Surrender In The Writings Of E. Stanley Jones, Varghese M. Kattapuram Jan 1964

The Theology Of Self-Surrender In The Writings Of E. Stanley Jones, Varghese M. Kattapuram

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

This thesis seeks to grapple with one of the most crucial issues confronting Christian theology today, namely, what to make of the insights and discoveries of the newer disciplines of psychology, psychoanalysis, psychiatry, psychotherapy, etc. For a while psychology proceeded as though theology did not exist or as though it were a remnant of the superstitions of a previous age. However, in recent years psychological practitioners outside the church have shown somewhat greater interest in the religious life of their patients and in the role of religious life of their patients and in the role of religious life and practice …

Able Ministers In The New Year, Lorenz Wunderlich Jan 1964

Able Ministers In The New Year, Lorenz Wunderlich

Concordia Theological Monthly

This Word of God through St. Paul the apostle is preeminently for those who are privileged to stand in the diaconate of our Lord and who perform diaconal functions for Him. To be sure, it does not offer the catena of one and one-half dozen qualifications which the same apostolic writer forges in his letters to Timothy and Titus.

God's Tabernacles Among Men: A Study Of The Transfiguration, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

One of the features found in all accounts of the Transfiguration of our Lord is the suggestion of Peter: "Let us build here three tabernacles." We are not told what Jesus' answer to this request was, but from the sequence of events it is clear that it went unheeded.

Representative Universalism And The Conquest Of Canaan, A. J. Mattill Jr. Jan 1964

Representative Universalism And The Conquest Of Canaan, A. J. Mattill Jr.

Concordia Theological Monthly

The problem of the nature of the conquest of Canaan has long puzzled biblical scholars. The Book of Joshua opens with the Lord promising Joshua "every place" that the sole of his foot shall tread upon, "from the wilderness, and this Lebanon, even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea.

The Origin And Original Meaning Of Sacrificial Blood Offerings As Revealed In The Bible And Modern Scriptures, Theo Emory Mckean Jan 1964

The Origin And Original Meaning Of Sacrificial Blood Offerings As Revealed In The Bible And Modern Scriptures, Theo Emory Mckean

Theses and Dissertations

This study is concerned with the origin and original meaning of sacrificial blood offerings as practiced by the ancient Israelite people and their progenitors. "Modern" scriptural sources including the Pearl of Great Price, the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrine and Covenants are used along with the Bible as the basic reference material.
The lack of explicit information in the Bible as to the inception and meaning of sacrifice has resulted in the development of many theories which suggest that this rite had a human beginning. These theories imply that by natural expression man began to seek favor from his …
