An Unlikely Preacher: C.S. Lewis And The War-Time Sermon, Joe Ricke
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
The sermon was supposedly titled “‘None Other Gods’: Culture in War Time,” although no extant copy has that full title. His text was an obscure verse from the Book of Deuteronomy. It was the first sermon he had ever preached. Before the end of the war, the preacher, Clive Staples Lewis, a native of Belfast, a veteran of the Great War, and a rather recently converted agnostic, had become a household word in Great Britain and beyond as a defender of the Christian faith.

C.S. Lewis On Scripture And The Christ, The World Of God: Convergence And Divergence With Karl Barth, P. H. Brazier
C.S. Lewis On Scripture And The Christ, The World Of God: Convergence And Divergence With Karl Barth, P. H. Brazier
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
The aim of this paper is to explore a fundamental convergence between Lewis and Barth in their understanding of the w/Word of God, or the ground of their respective doctrines of Scripture. Lewis, like Barth, distinguished between the word of God (Scripture) and the Word of God (Christ). Each asks and answers the question: What is the relationship between Scripture and Christ? This work will also explore the priority of the Word above all else, including the church and the Bible: as Lewis commented, “We have no abiding city even in philosophy: all passes except the Word.” Finally, it will …
The Lewis-Anscombe Debate: A Philosophical Reformulation, James E. Taylor
The Lewis-Anscombe Debate: A Philosophical Reformulation, James E. Taylor
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
This paper will not examine the evaluative and historical questions that have arisen about this debate. Instead, it will provide an extensive reformulation and explanation of the philosophical arguments employed by both Lewis and Anscombe which are contained in their published works that are directly related to the debate. These works are the first edition of Miracles,3 which contains the argument that forms the basis of the debate, the essay that Anscombe read at the Socratic Club, and Lewis’ second edition of Miracles. Hopefully, this will serve to clarify the concepts, issues, and arguments employed in the debate and its …
Is Pain A Problem? J.J. Rousseau And C.S. Lewis On Suffering And Human Nature, Trevor Shelley, Jacob Siegler
Is Pain A Problem? J.J. Rousseau And C.S. Lewis On Suffering And Human Nature, Trevor Shelley, Jacob Siegler
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
What is meant here is whether the phenomenon of pain can be intellectually accounted for, in the sense of why it exists at all and how it relates to the nature of man. Or, to state matters differently: Can the problem of pain’s presence in the lives of human beings be theoretically solved? To approach this problem, this work will examine the thought of Jean Jacques Rousseau and C. S. Lewis on the problem of pain and happiness and on human nature more generally.

From Vocal Agnostic To Reluctant Convert: C.S. Lewis And C.E.M. Joad, Joel Heck
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
After a brief consideration of Joad’s life and career this essay will examine the events that led to his return to the Christian faith, and the extent of Lewis’ influence on it. As we will see, Joad and Lewis’ interest in philosophy and the world of ideas, their reading of one another’s work and the mutual respect that emerged out of that effort, their published debate over the issue of theodicy in 1941, their lively debate over the merits of Christianity at the Socratic Club in 1944, and their exchange over the troubling issue of animal pain in 1950, comprise …

Defending The Dangerous Idea: An Update On C.S. Lewis' Argument From Reason, Victor Reppert
Defending The Dangerous Idea: An Update On C.S. Lewis' Argument From Reason, Victor Reppert
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
Although C. S. Lewis's argument against naturalism is widely thought to have been undermined by Elizabeth Anscombe’s criticisms (and indeed it is sometimes claimed that Lewis was considerably weakened as an apologist by this exchange), I thought that an adequately reformulated version of the argument could surmount Anscombe’s objections. This claim was defended for the first time in print in “ ‘The Lewis-Anscombe Controversy’: A Discussion of the Issues,” which appeared in Christian Scholar’s Review in 1989
A Time For Joy: The Ancestry And Apologetic Force Of C.S. Lewis' Sehnsucht, James P. Helfers
A Time For Joy: The Ancestry And Apologetic Force Of C.S. Lewis' Sehnsucht, James P. Helfers
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
Excerpt: "In sum, it is clear that Lewis owes a great debt to Wordsworth’s idea of Joy, a debt he acknowledges explicitly through the title of his autobiography. Their views of the experience have much in common: for both it is an intense long- ing, for both it undergirds their sense of the reality of an eternal realm, as well as guiding them toward either virtue (in Wordsworth’s case) or a contemplation of and belief in the eternal (in Lewis’ case). Both of their experiences connect, ei- ther explicitly or implicitly, with the philosophical notion of the sublime. There are …

Evolution Of A Protestant Theology Institution In Croatia: From Private Church College To University Center, Lidija Matošević, Marina Schumann, Enoh Šeba
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The focus of this case study is the Faculty of Theology “Matthias Flacius Illyricus” (Teološki fakultet “Matija Vlačić Ilirik” – TFMVI) in Zagreb, founded by two minority religious communities: the Lutheran Church and the Baptist Union. The authors’ premise is that by examining over forty years of the institution’s existence, prominent trends and attitudes can be identified that continue to shape the interaction between churches and the state within Croatian society, where the Roman Catholic Church represents the overwhelming majority. The authors begin with a historical overview of the position of churches under the Communist regime in Yugoslavia, with particular …
