Evocations Of Grace: The Writings Of Joseph Sittler On Ecology, Theology, And Ethics, Editited Steven C. Bouma-Prediger, Editited Peter Bakken

As early as 1954 -- well before such popular books as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring -- the influential Lutheran theologian Joseph Sittler wrote on the need to think about "a theology for earth." Perhaps most famous for his eloquent and provocative address "Called to Unity" given at the 1961 World Council of Churches assembly in New Delhi, Sittler prophetically and insistently gave voice to what he called "ecological commitment as theological responsibility."

Creation Care And Character: The Nature And Necessity Of The Ecological Virtues, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger Mar 1998

Creation Care And Character: The Nature And Necessity Of The Ecological Virtues, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger

Faculty Publications

This article explores a neglected but significant area of research in ecological ethics, namely, virtue theory. More precisely, the author attempts to answer this cluster of questions: What exactly is a virtue? Are there particular virtues which arise from a biblically informed Christian ecological ethic? If so, what are those virtues? How important are they? Are they merely nice to have or are they necessary? The thesis is that certain virtues--like frugality, humility, and wisdom--are indispensable if Christians are to responsibly fulfill their calling to be earthkeepers. In short, certain character traits are central to creation care.

Why Care For Creation?: From Prudence To Piety, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger Jan 1998

Why Care For Creation?: From Prudence To Piety, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger

Faculty Publications

Why should people, and Christians in particular, care for creation? What reasons, what arguments, are there for taking our ecological responsibilities more seriously? In this article Steven Bouma-Prediger presents and evaluates ten arguments for caring for creation. His main claim is that for a variety of good reasons, like Dr. Seuss's Lorax, Christians should speak for the trees---they should care for non-human creation. Mr. Bouma-Prediger teaches in the religion department at Hope College.

The Greening Of Theology: The Ecological Models Of Rosemary Radford Ruether, Joseph Sittler, And Jürgen Moltmann, Steven C. Bouma-Prediger

Faculty Publications

This volume examines the contributions of three contemporary theologians -- Rosemary Radford Ruether, Joseph Sittler, and Jurgen Moltmann -- to the development of Christian ecological theology. Against the charge that the Christian tradition is ecologically bankrupt, the author demonstratesthe intellectual and spiritual resources available within Christianity for addressing ecological issues. Of particular interest are Ruether's doctrine of God and her emphasis on ecojustice, Sittler's cosmic Christology and reconception of the relation between nature and grace, and Motlmann'sdoctrine of the Holy Spirit and argument for social trinitarianism. Beyond evaluating the issues raised by Ruether, Sittler, and Moltmann, the author presents sixteen …

The Humanity Of God In Liberal Orthodox Theology, Paul Valliere Jan 1993

The Humanity Of God In Liberal Orthodox Theology, Paul Valliere

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The purpose of this paper is to present some of the testimonies of liberal Orthodox theology in late Imperial Russia concerning the theology of Incarnation. Since it may come as a surprise to many people, even to many Orthodox, that a tradition of liberal theology existed in Russian Orthodoxy, the evidence I adduce may be of interest apart from the specific theological discussion to which it pertains.
