"Using Luther’S Small Catechism As A Family Devotional" A Study Of Family Prayer At Messiah Lutheran Church Hays, Kansas 2018, Rocco Mallardi

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Mallardi, Rocco J. “Using Luther’s Small Catechism as a Family Devotional.” A study of Family Prayer at Messiah Lutheran Church Hays, Kansas 2018.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2019. 153 pp.

The goal of this study was to seek an answer to the question: how can a church help parents teach the faith in the home? In search of an answer to this question I studied how Martin Luther answered the question. From this study I developed a Small Catechism based curriculum for families to use as they gather for prayer and the study of God’s Word.

This major applied project explores the use of Martin Luther’s household prayers in Christian devotional practice. Published in the Small Catechism of 1529, the household prayers (morning, evening, and table prayers) have enjoyed varying usage since that time. This study researches whether or not they may serve as a devotional resource for contemporary believers. After addressing the Biblical and theological foundations of home devotion, the literary background of the …

Notes For Lectures On Catechlsm, William H. T. Dau, James Melchsner

Notes for Lectures on Catechism by Professor William Dau

A mimeographed copy of Professor Dau's Notes for Lectures on Catechism was among my father's papers – Ernest Melchsner, St. Louis seminary class of 1922. Biblical texts from the New King James -Version have been added to the references.

With the assistance of Rev. Daniel Preus and the resource desk at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN, It has been determined that the catechism referred to in these Notes was the German-English Schwan Catechism from 1912.

Some formatting has been added, i.e. dividing long sections into paragraphs to make It more readable. At times the other than English word phrases …

The Recovery Of Memorization In Confirmation: A Study Of Junior Confirmation At Concordia Lutheran Church, Geneseo, Illinois, Daniel Olson Apr 2005

The Recovery Of Memorization In Confirmation: A Study Of Junior Confirmation At Concordia Lutheran Church, Geneseo, Illinois, Daniel Olson

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The purpose of this project was to address the problem of junior confirmation students not retaining long term the material they were being assigned to learn. The project employed the use of various active teaching methods in order to include the different learning styles of the students. The project demonstrates that the use of these active learning methods did result in a reduction in rote memorization and a significant improvement in the student's ability to retain what they were being taught. The conclusion of the project is that there is a need for greater implementation of these active learning techniques.

The Confirmation Manual For Instruction In The Word, Edward Koehler May 1977

The Confirmation Manual For Instruction In The Word, Edward Koehler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis contains a proposed course of instruction in the Word of God for catechumens of the Lutheran Church. It presents the Old Testament as a self-contained unit of study primarily for pupils twelve to fourteen years old. Ultimately, the course is designed to include the New Testament as the basis for a second year of study. The aim of the course is to help the student understand and apply the basic teachings of the Christian faith. The Bible is used as the source-book, and Martin Luther's Small Catechism is used as a supplement to guide the pupil toward a …

A History Of The Early Catechisms Of The Missouri Synod, Richard Maassel Jun 1957

A History Of The Early Catechisms Of The Missouri Synod, Richard Maassel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study was to determine which catechisms were used, the extent of their use, and their general characteristics. More precisely, the aim was to determine the factors which led the Missouri Synod to adopt its own catechism only eleven years after its organization. The study continued from there with an examination of the first official catechism and the way in which it was receiced.

The Confirmation Instruction Of Children, Harold Dorn Mar 1953

The Confirmation Instruction Of Children, Harold Dorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Purpose. We are all interested in improving our confirmation instruction. It was thought that one of the most practical ideas to find out how we might improve our individual techniques would be to make a survey of what our brethren were doing in the field. Such a study would indicate what materials and procedures were in use, our principal difficulties, and such matters that needed special study. The study might also point up new ideas and trends.

An Analysis Of The Extent Of Growth In Doctrinal Knowledge Of St Louis Children In The Nine Months After Confirmation, Donald William Backus Jun 1951

An Analysis Of The Extent Of Growth In Doctrinal Knowledge Of St Louis Children In The Nine Months After Confirmation, Donald William Backus

Bachelor of Divinity

In an effort to determine a partial answer to the question whether or not children grow in doctrinal knowledge and understanding during the post-confirmation period, the following study was made among St. Louis children over the period of nine months after confirmation. Inasmuch, as the study confines itself to children in St. Louis, to a specific type of material, generalizations should be made cautiously. It would not necessarily be valid, for example, without careful comparison of all the variables, to conclude that children in a small rural parish in Texas would show the same rate or direction of growth that …

A Survey Of The Confirmation Instruction Of The Children Within A Pastoral Conference, Robert T. Koehler May 1948

A Survey Of The Confirmation Instruction Of The Children Within A Pastoral Conference, Robert T. Koehler

Bachelor of Divinity

Confirmation .instruction of children is the foundation of the work of the pastor. During his period of contact with the catechumens he can strengthen the personal Christianity of the children. He has the children in the time of their lives when their minds are eager and susceptible. A good catechist through his instruction lays a solid foundation for a congregation of staunch believers in future years. Good confirmation instruction makes the preaching more efficient, makes the work with troubled souls easier, and increases the spirit of love between pastor and catechumens. A bad catechist will usually produce contrary results. The …

The Lord's Prayer, The Pastor's Prayer, G. H. Smukal

Concordia Theological Monthly

While the etymological derivation may remain for years to come a matter of controversy, it is certain that ὲπιούσιος; does not denote a bread extraordinarily given. And thus we arrive at the old, familiar translation "daily." It is not a farfetched recommendation to pray the Matthew version in the morning devotion and the Luke version in the evening. However, we cannot pass on every occasion of prayer through the painful choice of the version to be used, for the day would end without our partaking of food.

Approaches To Bible-Study In A Metropolitan Center, A. R. Kretzmann Sep 1937

Approaches To Bible-Study In A Metropolitan Center, A. R. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

To many of our people the Bible is a closed book, not because of the difficulty of understanding it, but because the approaches to it, outside of the sermon, have always been rather ponderous and seemingly uninteresting. A fortunate impatience and natural rebellion against such an attitude has caused us to seek new approaches to Bible-study which would be thoroughly dignified and truly enriching. The people who have found the way back to the Scriptures through these approaches have contributed to one of the most heartening experiences of a metropolitan ministry. We are not here in order to defend any …

This inquiry is to assist our committee in determining the general form that our advanced Catechism ought to have. We speak here of an advanced Catechism because Synod has resolved to publish also a shorter and simpler book, to be known as the elementary, or junior, Catechism.

The Catechism In The Christian Home, T. Laetsch Aug 1934

The Catechism In The Christian Home, T. Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

Luther and his faithful colaborers in the work of Reformation owed their success, next to the grace of God, to the fact that they used the only means whereby a reformation of the Church could possibly be effected, the preaching of the pure and unadulterated Word of God in simple, straightforward manner. The simple truths of the Catechism, those basic facts laid down in the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and the Lord's Prayer, were reintroduced by these men of God into church and home and school.

The Preparation Of Confirmands, Or The Instruction Of Catechumens, Herm. A. Steege May 1932

The Preparation Of Confirmands, Or The Instruction Of Catechumens, Herm. A. Steege

Concordia Theological Monthly

From the very earliest time of the Christian era, candidates for admission into membership of the Christian Church were first duly instructed and prepared. In the early days such instruction was to prepare them for baptism; for Baptism is the Sacrament of initiation, and it was natural that this mission-work of those days concentrated on adults. It seems to have exhibited various degrees of thoroughness. Without question such instruction was made a matter of prime importance in the Apostolic Age. The several glimpses which the Book of Acts gives us into this particular activity of the early Church easily convince …

Suggestive Material For Song Service Address, L Blankenbuehler May 1930

Suggestive Material For Song Service Address, L Blankenbuehler

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran Church possesses in its beautiful hymns a priceless treasure. This fact is often attested to by non-Lutheran authorities ·on hymnology. On a recent lecture tour through the United States the greatest living authority on Bach, Dr. Terry, of Edinburgh, referred to the Lutheran hymnal as "that precious legacy of the Reformation.'' The man who gave the Church of the Reformation her first hymnal is the same who gave the Church the open Bible by putting the Word of God into the vernacular, the same who summed up the fundamental teachings of the Holy Book in that marvelous "Laymen's …
