The Pastor And Intracongreptional Organizations, W. E. Hohenstein Jul 1937

The Pastor And Intracongreptional Organizations, W. E. Hohenstein

Concordia Theological Monthly

Little has been written on the history of intracongregational societies, except with reference to young people's societies. The ladies' aid is the oldest society within the congregations of our synodical organization. Then follows the young people's society (or societies) and, more recently, the men's club. Some congregations with parish-schools have a parent-teachers' organization and in connection with it a preschool mothers' circle.

The Pastor And Mission Opportunities, Arthur Brunn Jun 1937

The Pastor And Mission Opportunities, Arthur Brunn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Have we become guilty of introducing faulty terminology by speaking of a certain group of pastors as "missionary pastors"? The impression seems to be abroad among us that missionary pastors are the men who are working in parishes under the supervision and control of some mission board. We speak of so many mission-stations. A given synodical District lists so many missionaries at work in the Home Mission field. Synod has so many missionary in the Foreign Mission field. These are the "missionary pastors." However, the pastor of old St. John's on Foch Boulevard is not a missionary pastor. His church …

The Pastor And Religious Education, Paul Koenig May 1937

The Pastor And Religious Education, Paul Koenig

Concordia Theological Monthly

God’s Word is by no means silent on the subject of religious or Christian education. The pages of that Holy Book abound in references to one of the greatest tasks of the Church of Jesus Christ and her members. Not only did the Lord of the Church in His Great Commission make it incumbent on His disciples to "teach them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you"; not only has He given the means for the teaching, viz., His holy Word; not only has He set forth aims of such teaching efforts in unmistakable terms; but He has …

The Pastor And The Pastoral Cure Of Souls, H. F. Wind Apr 1937

The Pastor And The Pastoral Cure Of Souls, H. F. Wind

Concordia Theological Monthly

As the pastor of today surveys the scene presented by life In twentieth-century America, the setting in which he must practise his profession, he cannot but be impressed by the increasing magnitude of the task set for him. This task is indeed many-sided. It includes the functions of the public ministry, the preaching of the Word and the public administration of the Sacraments; it includes the teaching functions of the ministry in the educational activities of the Church; it includes administrative tasks as executive head of a rather complex organization; it includes missionary activities and frequently service in synodical offices; …

The Pastor And His Audience, P. E. Kretzmann Mar 1937

The Pastor And His Audience, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

In that delightful book by Arthur Stevens Phelps entitled Speaking in Public we find, among the many scintillating epigrams and pungent sayings, this thought-provoking sentence: "It takes two to make a speech, the man that speaks and the man that listens." And again: ''If a speaker may be 'too full for utterance,' a congregation may be too full for audience." Both of these sayings contain much food for thought, especially for the Lutheran pastor.

The Pastor And His Sermon, E. J. Friedrich Feb 1937

The Pastor And His Sermon, E. J. Friedrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the course of the last fifteen or twenty years much was said and done to discredit the pulpit as an instrument of power in the building of the kingdom of God. Even within the sanctuary itself strident voices proclaimed with prophetic finality that the pulpit had lost its power and that the day of preaching had passed forever. Systematic efforts were put forth in many quarters to supplant the preacher by religious technicians in the fields of worship, education, social service, and organization; and men quite generally staked their hopes for a virile and world-conquering Church upon agencies and …

Justification, Santification, And Stewardship In Thelr Aims And Relation To Each Other, W. Arndt Feb 1937

Justification, Santification, And Stewardship In Thelr Aims And Relation To Each Other, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

Now we come to the consideration of stewardship. Stewardship consists in our being entrusted with certain resources concerning the use of which we have received instructions from the Owner and have to render an account. The Standard Dictionary says: "A steward is a person entrusted with the management of estates or affairs not his own." You cannot be a steward without being in charge of something.
