Peace and Conflict Studies

Peace and education are inseparable. Grounding on the aforementioned premise, peace education has become part of the curriculum in a number of countries including the Philippines. Along with the inclusion of peace education was the challenge of how to provide responsive and meaningful learning experiences in peace education. This article discusses the attempt of the use of participatory photography as a teaching methodology. Ten pre-service teachers participated in a peace education class that trialed the use of participatory photography as a teaching approach guided by a manual that was developed by the researcher. Translating Heimat In Multilingual Dortmund, Kristin Dickinson

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Named for the people of 132 different nationalities photojournalist Peyman Azhari encountered in northern Dortmund over the course of a year, the photo collection Heimat 132 (2014) stands as testament to the many ethnicities, religions, and languages this neighborhood is home to. In my paper, I read Azhari’s photographs as sites of translation capable of reclaiming a critical understanding of Heimat (home or homeland) that is fundamentally multilingual. I do so by first exploring the link between racially and ethnically exclusionary definitions of Heimat and the all-too-common assertion that Heimat is an untranslatable word. Artist Statement

I began exploring manipulation and fabrication in the darkroom after a workshop in Alexander Diaz’s Introduction to Photography course. I have always had an affinity for nature, especially trees. I was especially moved by the barren trees seen during a cold North Florida winter. Growing up in Florida, I’m used to seeing the vast greenery brought by these trees, but there was just something about their emptiness during winter that really struck me.
