Pixel Size's Effect Upon Photo-Resolution, Levi Dewitt, Rion Huffman
Pixel Size's Effect Upon Photo-Resolution, Levi Dewitt, Rion Huffman

A common misconception with cameras is that the resolution of the photo—or the surface area of the picture measured in pixels, often referred to as pixel count—is the most important factor determining the picture quality. One of the first things that an aspiring photographer learns when researching cameras are that pixel count is not a highly representative factor in determining the resolving power, or clarity, of a camera. If the pixel count determines the physical dimensions of a picture, how would a professional camera with a 12-megapixel resolution—which yields a photo with a surface area of roughly 12,000,000 pixels—take any …
The Art Of Creating Photographic Portrait Sketches, Pablo E. Ortiz, Rion Huffman
The Art Of Creating Photographic Portrait Sketches, Pablo E. Ortiz, Rion Huffman

The art of creating a professional quality photographic portrait is a skill that an undergraduate student may take their entire educational career to master. On a separate path, an undergraduate may also take their career to master freehand drawing and sketching. When these two creative paths align, the results can be extraordinary. This poster will showcase the journey of one undergraduate student to combine their photographic and artistic portrait skills along with software techniques to create one of a kind photographic portrait sketches. The poster will serve as a best practices guide to the creation of each image.

Cameras are a tool used to capture still images. This project examines a way to bring still images to life without using any video components. By studying basic animation principles, and dissecting photos based on subject, background, and foreground, Adobe Creative Suite will be utilized to bring still photos to life. Through my research, I discovered the best software for creating moving photos. This project also finds the best way to photograph images, so the dissection of the subject, background, and foreground is seamless and a more streamlined process.

Using a glass ball (known as a crystal ball, lens ball, or refraction ball), one is able to capture a unique perspective in a photo. When light passes through a denser mass, refraction occurs. An inverted image of the scene behind the ball is seen. Refraction balls are most often used in landscape or up-close photography, where the ball creates a similar effect to a fisheye lens. Though, the refraction ball has much more flexibility. The ball can be used within the scene to create an interesting focal point. This project uses a sixty-millimeter refraction ball to showcase people in …
Melding The Mediums: Combining Fine Art, Graphic Design And Product Photography To Create Commercial Images, Natasha Lawrence, Rion Huffman
Melding The Mediums: Combining Fine Art, Graphic Design And Product Photography To Create Commercial Images, Natasha Lawrence, Rion Huffman
Posters
This project grew from a little girl enjoying paint by numbers, to an undergraduate student’s passion for graphic design and photography. The poster will showcase that student’s ability to synthesize information about fine art, graphic design and product photography techniques to create a series of finalized composite images with commercial value. The documentation of this academic journey will serve as a roadmap for others to understand the challenges and the overall process to meld these three mediums.

This project was done in order to learn more about splash photography for product work. The goal was to learn what kinds of ways one can create splashes in a photograph, without having to use to much photoshop manipulation, as well as experimenting with the difference in pouring a liquid and dropping an object into a liquid.
Fire And Skye: The Magic And Misadventure Of Filming Traditional Music Videos In Scotland, Katie Daniels
Fire And Skye: The Magic And Misadventure Of Filming Traditional Music Videos In Scotland, Katie Daniels
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
As part of my study-abroad experience during the fall of 2018, I was awarded a Benjamin H. Gilman Scholarship. One of the components of this nationally competitive scholarship was to complete a follow-on service project to share my experiences abroad with a wider audience and give back to the community. My project was to bring my harp and a DSLR camera and film 4-5 music videos, contextualizing Scottish music in the Scottish landscape and capture, at least a little bit, a sense of what it was to be abroad. The final project consists of four videos, each one highlighting a …
Images Of Nursing From West Michigan: A Photo Essay, Aldina Mahmutovic
Images Of Nursing From West Michigan: A Photo Essay, Aldina Mahmutovic
Honors Projects
The image of nursing is diverse and complex, with public perceptions influenced by traditional imagery and negative stereotypes. Few recent studies consider how nurses view their professional image. My study aimed to uncover how West Michigan nurses perceive the image of nursing. Approval was given by the local Sigma chapter (Kappa Epsilon at Large), to recruit participants from members, and by Grand Valley's IRB. Via an online REDCap survey, participants submitted an original photo and written narrative. Submissions were searched for underlying patterns using thematic analysis. Themes identified were: (1) nurses establish relationships with unique and vulnerable clients, using their …
Restorative, Mallory Trecaso
Restorative, Mallory Trecaso
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
The series of photographs in Restorative examines intimate views of home interiors that metaphorically embody my physical self. Emergency surgery left me with new marks, scars, and a patchwork of temporary solutions, and a heightened understanding of my own physicality. I use the familiar subject of the home to talk about my body. Looking through the lens of the home as a metaphor gives the viewer a different framework to view, rather confronting one’s self directly. Like a home, a body records time through markings, imperfections, discoloration, and cracks. Some, like a broken window or a scratch, happen suddenly while …
Seeing Every Corner Of Tangier: A Photographic Collection Going Beyond The Media Sphere, Cynthia J. Coleman
Seeing Every Corner Of Tangier: A Photographic Collection Going Beyond The Media Sphere, Cynthia J. Coleman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Tangier is an iconic city, with an image recognized internationally. Its image is created, not only by the city itself, but by its representation in the media. That said, it is worth considering, how true to Tangier is its image? This study considers this issue by addressing the following question: how does the image of Tangier, as represented in photographs, compare with that portrayed in the media? To accomplish this, a collection of 18 photographs over the area of Tangier, an area of 44 square miles, was taken. The photos were taken to as objectively as possible represent the city …
The House Of The Fish: Collaborative Coral Reef Awareness Project On Nosy Be, Meghan Hurley
The House Of The Fish: Collaborative Coral Reef Awareness Project On Nosy Be, Meghan Hurley
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The purpose of this project was to initiate a place-based coral reef education project, with the ultimate goal of improved localized conservation efforts in the face of growing global threats. Three principal groups that interact with coral reefs on Nosy Be were interviewed: fishers, tourist guides, and conservationists. Research was conducted on the biology of coral reefs, and on the most prominent threats facing coral reefs in the Indian Ocean and around Nosy Be. Information and direct quotes from interviews, and the results of research, were incorporated into a photographic journal entitled "In the House of the Fish" or "An-tragno …

Digital Image Retouching – Evaluation Assignment [Photography], Thierry Gourjon
Open Educational Resources
“Digital Image Retouching: Evaluation Assignment” was developed in the context of a 2017-18 CTL sponsored mini-grant where the course HUA 231 Digital Photography II, which was formerly an elective, was redesigned as a required course in the Photography program. As part of the mini grant work, program’s curriculum map was also adjusted to reflect the changes. The students in HUA 231 are usually in their second to last semester as this is an advanced digital class. They have taken the pre-requisite HUA 131 (Digital Photography I) in earlier semesters. The assignment will be implemented for the first time in Fall …

"And Nothing She Needs": Victoria's Secret And The Gaze Of "Post-Feminism", Marc Ouellette
"And Nothing She Needs": Victoria's Secret And The Gaze Of "Post-Feminism", Marc Ouellette
English Faculty Publications
A study of the Victoria’s Secret catalogues, which frames the period 1996-2006, reveals that the models’ poses and postures manipulate the formulaic gaze of objectification with seemingly empowering themes. Instead of the indeterminate, averted looks that Berger (1972) and Mulvey (1989) considered in their analyses, the more recent versions of Victoria’s Secret photographs confront viewers with pouts, glares, and stares of defiance. In this essay, I contribute to current conversations regarding mixed messages that concern post-feminism and third-wave feminism (Duffy, Hancock, & Tyler, 2017; Glapka, 2017; McAllister & DeCarvalho, 2014; McRobbie, 2009). In this regard, the Victoria’s Secret catalogues constitute …
