Ought We To Forget What We Cannot Forget? A Reply To Sybille Schmidt, Attila Tanyi Dec 2014

Ought We To Forget What We Cannot Forget? A Reply To Sybille Schmidt, Attila Tanyi

Attila Tanyi

This is a short response to Sybille Schmidt's paper (in the same volume) "Is There an Ethics of Forgetting?". The response starts out by admitting that forgetting is an essential function of human existence, that it serves, as it were, an important evolutionary function: that it is good, since it contributes to our well-being, to have the ability to forget. But this does not give us as answer, affirmative or not, to Schmidt’s title question: “Is There an Ethics of Forgetting?” The main impediment to answering this question, certainly to answering it in the affirmative, seems to be a problem …

Arendtian Action And The Camp: Understanding The Connection Between Totalitarianism And Politics, Corey Dethier Feb 2012

Arendtian Action And The Camp: Understanding The Connection Between Totalitarianism And Politics, Corey Dethier

Corey Dethier

This paper argues for a reconceptualization of Arendt's concept of action based on her account of and experience with totalitarianism. Using Origins of Totalitarianism as a guide to what Arendt sees as the breakdown of a functioning society, it reconstructs her conception of politics found inThe Human Condition and On Revolution to show that what Arendt aims for is a form of government that can prevent the spread of totalitarianism and its characteristics. From this perspective, it argues that Arendt's concepts of politics and action are designed to create a public aware of its plurality and primarily concerned with protecting …

Singularização E Subjetivação: Arendt, Foucault E Os Novos Agentes Políticos Do Presente, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Andre de Macedo Duarte

he text discusses the hypothesis that Arendt’s notion of singularization and Foucault’s notion of subjectivation offer important conceptual contributions to understanding who are the actors and how do they act together in the new and autonomous political collectives. In this text I take under consideration a post- identitarian minorities collective and an eco-esthetical-political collective concerned with the issue of urban mobility. The text is divided into three main parts. Firstly, I discuss Arendt’s notion of political action as the manifestation of the political agents’ singularity, closely connected to her understanding of politics as an end in itself. The manifestation of …

Singularisation Et Subjectivation Subjectivation Éthico-Politique. Arendt Et Foucault Autour De La Question : Qui Est Le Nouvel Acteur Politique ?, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Andre de Macedo Duarte

The text proposes and discusses the hypothesis that Arendt’s notion of singularization and Foucault’s notion of subjectivation offer important conceptual contributions to the understanding of who are the actors and how do they act together in the new and autonomous political collectives, taking under consideration some post-identitarian minorities movements. The text is divided into three main parts. Firstly, I discuss Arendt’s notion of political action as the manifestation of the political agents singularity, which articulates with her understanding of politics as an end in itself. This notion seems important to understanding new forms of political engagement which do not limit …

Hannah Arendt E O Pensamento ‘Da’ Comunidade: Notas Para O Conceito De Comunidades Plurais, Andre De Macedo Duarte Sep 2011

Hannah Arendt E O Pensamento ‘Da’ Comunidade: Notas Para O Conceito De Comunidades Plurais, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Andre de Macedo Duarte

The present text aims at theoretically approximating Hannah Arendt’s reflections and the thought of Jean-Luc Nancy and Roberto Esposito, authors who have pro- posed a radical interrogation concerning being-in-common and its constitutive plu- rality. From Arendt we priorize the discussion of her concepts of action, speech, performance, freedom, plurality and singularity. From Esposito and Nancy, we emphacize their common criticisms against conceiving the community as a given subsistent reality, as well as their critiques against defining being-in-common by way of notions such as identity and subjectivity. The essay is dedicated not only to highlighting the contemporary relevance and vitality of …

Hannah Arendt And Augustine Of Hippo: On The Pleasure Of And Desire For Evil, Antonio Calcagno May 2010

Hannah Arendt And Augustine Of Hippo: On The Pleasure Of And Desire For Evil, Antonio Calcagno

Antonio Calcagno

Hannah Arendt wrote two volumes on thinking and willing in The Life of the Mind, but due to her untimely death her work devoted to judgement, especially political judgement, was never completed. We do, however, have a significant amount of writings on this theme as evidenced by her lectures on Kant’s Third Critique. Judgement and thinking are critical in order to prevent what Arendt calls the “banality of evil”. Drawing on Augustine and Arendt’s work on Augustine, this paper seeks to argue that another form of serious evil has its root in what Augustine calls the libido habendi and the …

What About The Children? Benjamin And Arendt: On Education, Work, And The Political, Jules Simon

Jules Simon

This article is a rough draft of an article that I contributed to an edited volume of articles dealing with progressive education theory. I reflect on articles that Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin wrote that deal with educational reform and innovation, both political in nature.

Violence And Deprivation: Arendt And The Pervasiveness Of Superfluous Life, Emma Norman Mar 2009

Violence And Deprivation: Arendt And The Pervasiveness Of Superfluous Life, Emma Norman

Emma R. Norman

This paper emerges from, and engages with, the current proliferation of discussions concerning Arendt’s views on sovereignty, humanity, and superfluousness. Tracing some of the different strands of her notion of human superfluousness, I look at how the exclusion and deprivation inherent in the idea of superfluousness is reflected in, and illuminated by, contemporary questions surrounding stateless persons, and several key experiences of terrorism. I argue that the strong and radical connections this notion has with Arendt´s concept of violence deserve more emphasis than it has hitherto received. For the link between superfluousness and the biopolitical ‘administration of bare lives’ undertaken …

El Yo Político. Concepciones Del Yo, La Política Y La Autonomía En La Teoría Política Contemporánea, Emma Norman Oct 2007

El Yo Político. Concepciones Del Yo, La Política Y La Autonomía En La Teoría Política Contemporánea, Emma Norman

Emma R. Norman

LA AUTORA EXPLORA CÓMO LOS CONCEPTOS DEL "YO" Y LA "POLÍTICA" HAN SIDO CONCEPTUALIZADOS EN DISTINTAS ÁREAS DE LA FILOSOFIA POLÍTICA CONTEMPORÁNEA. SU ARGUMENTO CENTRAL ES QUE AMBOS CONCEPTOS ESTÁN INELUDIBLEMENTE CONECTADOS Y QUE TAL INTERCONEXIÓN NO HA SIDO PLENAMENTE RECONOCIDA EN LOS DEBATES LIBERAL COMUNITARISTA, POSTESTRUCTURALISTA Y DE DEMOCRACIA DELIBERATIVA. LA AUTORA DEFIENDE UNA CONCEPCIÓN POSLIBERAL DEL YO QUE RECONOCE UNA CONEXIÓN CERCANA Y QUE ES ENSANCHADA, CON "LO POLÍTICO". BASÁNDOSE EN LA CRÍTICA DE LA POLÍTICA LIBERAL DE CARL SCHMITT Y EN LAS PERSPECTIVAS SINGULARES DE HAMRNH ARENDT, NORMAN DESARROLLA UNA VISIÓN POSARENDTIANA MODERADAMENTE AGONÍSTICA. ESTA VISIÓN DE …

Hannah Arendt's Radical Politics: Beyond Actually Existing Democracies, Andre De Macedo Duarte Jan 2007

Hannah Arendt's Radical Politics: Beyond Actually Existing Democracies, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Andre de Macedo Duarte

The present text investigates Arendt’s conception of the political underlying her theoretical reconstruction of the Greek polis. My main argument is that Arendt’s return to the past aims at questioning the political alternatives offered by many contemporary currents of political liberalism, which tend to reduce the political to the domain of the juridical. Distinctively, I think that Arendt outlines a radical conception of democracy that is to be situated beyond the model of our actually existing democracies. In order to show that Arendt’s aim was not that of elaborating a theoretical normative and utopian conception of the political, far away …

Biopolitica Y Diseminación De La Violencia: La Crítica De Arendt Al Presente, Andre De Macedo Duarte Jan 2004

Biopolitica Y Diseminación De La Violencia: La Crítica De Arendt Al Presente, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Andre de Macedo Duarte

In his work Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life, Giorgio Agamben affirms that Arendt and Foucault were the contemporary political theorists that best understood the modern dramatic political shifts that culminate in the Nazi and Stalinist extermination camps. This text explores this insight and proposes to establish an Arendtian diagnosis of the present under the paradigm of biopolitics, defined as the unifying character of different contemporary violent phenomena such as: preventive and humanitarian wars; fanatical suicidal terrorist attacks aiming at the complete annihilation of its opponents; the utilization of chemical and bacteriological mass destructive weapons by States against civilian …

Hannah Arendt E O Pensamento Político Sob O Signo Do Amor Mundi, Andre De Macedo Duarte Dec 2002

Hannah Arendt E O Pensamento Político Sob O Signo Do Amor Mundi, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Hannah Arendt E A Modernidade: Esquecimento E Redescoberta Da Política, Andre De Macedo Duarte Jan 2001

Hannah Arendt E A Modernidade: Esquecimento E Redescoberta Da Política, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Andre de Macedo Duarte

Hannah Arendt views Modernity as the epoch of the forgetfulness of politics in its democratic determinations, since the political and the public sphere were either totally reduced to the specter of violence and terror, as it happened in the case of totalitarian regimes, or totally absorbed by the bureaucratic administration of society’s economic interests. In this article I intend to discuss the main arguments that constitute her critical diagnosis of Modernity, retracing them to their inspirational origins, that is, Nietzsche’s and Heidegger’s critical assessments of Modernity. Finally, I try to demonstrate that Arendt has balanced her critical understanding of politics …

Hannah Arendt Entre Heidegger E Benjamin: A Crítica Da Tradição E A Recuperação Da Origem Da Política, Andre De Macedo Duarte Jan 2001

Hannah Arendt Entre Heidegger E Benjamin: A Crítica Da Tradição E A Recuperação Da Origem Da Política, Andre De Macedo Duarte

Refletindo …
