Gustav Mahler - Conductor As Interpreter: A Comprehensive Study Of The Bach-Mahler Suite For Orchestra, Bryce Mara Seliger Jan 2001

Gustav Mahler - Conductor As Interpreter: A Comprehensive Study Of The Bach-Mahler Suite For Orchestra, Bryce Mara Seliger

Theses and Dissertations

This document is an examination of Mahler's contributions to the discipline of conducting through the Retuschen he made of other composers' works. Chapter 1 is an overview of Mahler's ideas on what interpretive responsibilities a conductor faces when he/she conducts other composers' music. It explores how his changes to other composers' scores give us a valuable glimpse of Mahler's own sense of interpretation as well as documents the nineteenth-century approach to performance practice.

Chapter 2 is a study of the history of Retuschen-making and how these modifications made by conductors exemplify a nineteenth-century attitude towards the music of the past. …

The Development Of Duke Ellington's Compositional Style: A Comparative Analysis Of Three Selected Works, Eric S. Strother

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Edward Kennedy Duke Ellingtons compositions are significant to the study of jazz and American music in general. This study examines his compositional style through a comparative analysis of three works from each of his main stylistic periods. Two Steps From The Blues: Creating Discourse And Constructing Canons In Blues Criticism, John M. Dougan Jan 2001

Two Steps From The Blues: Creating Discourse And Constructing Canons In Blues Criticism, John M. Dougan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation examines the development of blues criticism in its myriad forms from the 1920s to 1990s, its role in the emergence of a blues discourse and history, and the codification of a blues canon. I analyze blues discourse principally as the creation of critics, historians, and musicologists, but also as the result of series of complex, imbricated relationships among writers, musicians, fans, record collectors, and independent entrepreneurs.;Beginning in the 1920s, I outline a pre-history of blues discourse by examining the metamorphosis of the blues as a cultural text shaped by the folklore scholarship, criticism and reportage in the popular …

Symphony In One Movement: Score And Analysis, Jon Kostal Jan 2001

Symphony In One Movement: Score And Analysis, Jon Kostal

Masters Theses

This thesis consists of the composition, Symphony In One Movement, accompanied by an analytical study. The piece is composed for large orchestra and has a duration of twelve minutes. It comprises three connected but distinct sections, whose contrasts suggest individual movements. Each section is based on a traditional formal structure: sonata, passacaglia, and rondo-variations. The intention was to acknowledge the traditional symphony through these formal structures while applying more modem approaches to elements such as harmony, melody, and rhythm.

The analytical study that follows the score provides insight to the compositional methods and tools which were employed in the …

Cerebral Substrates Of Musical Imagery, Andrea R. Halpern Jan 2001

Cerebral Substrates Of Musical Imagery, Andrea R. Halpern

Faculty Journal Articles

Musical imagery refers to the experience of "replaying" music by imagining it inside the head. Whereas visual imagery has been extensively studied, few people have investigated imagery in the auditory domain. This article reviews a program of research that has tried to characterize auditory imagery for music using both behavioral and cognitive neuroscientific tools. I begin by describing some of my behavioral studies of the mental analogues of musical tempo, pitch, and temporal extent. I then describe four studies using three techniques that examine the correspondence of brain involvement in actually perceiving vs. imagining familiar music. These involve one lesion …

Children's Song-Makers As Messengers Of Hope: Participatory Research With Implications For Teacher Educators, Peter J. Baird Jan 2001

Children's Song-Makers As Messengers Of Hope: Participatory Research With Implications For Teacher Educators, Peter J. Baird

Doctoral Dissertations

Pete Seeger, Ella Jenkins, Suni Paz and six other leading children's musicians in the U.S contributed their experience to this study about the crucial role of music and singing for social justice in children's lives and its shrinking presence in U.S. pre-school and elementary schools. The study built its theoretical framework on arts and music education, transformative education, and folk and socially conscious children's music. Participatory research, based on the revolutionary education theories of Paulo Freire, guided the dialogues with the participants. These activist singer-songwriters were asked how they define social justice, how they involve children in singing, and what …

Gender And Achievement In Music Education: The View From The Classroom, Ruth Wright Dec 2000

Gender And Achievement In Music Education: The View From The Classroom, Ruth Wright

Ruth Wright Dr

This article originates from a research project investigating the effects of gender on achievement in music education in one secondary school. The study showed a correlation between gender and achievement in music with some surprising insights into possible causes of male under-achievement in education at Key Stages 3 (11–14 years) and 4 (14–16 years) generally. It is argued that because of national testing and school performance tables, the debate on male under-achievement in this country may have become so focused on core subjects that a very important link in the argument is being overlooked – a link provided by music …

Sweet Harmonies From Little Wooden Boxes: Mandolin Playing In Minneapolis And St. Paul, Amy M. Shaw Dec 2000

Sweet Harmonies From Little Wooden Boxes: Mandolin Playing In Minneapolis And St. Paul, Amy M. Shaw

Amy M. Shaw

The mandolin, initially popularized by Italian immigrants, became hugely popular in the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis between 1890 and 1920. The instrument attracted musicians of both sexes from various ethnic and socioeconomic groups, many of whom joined mandolin orchestras. Because it was affordable and relatively easy to play, many amateur musicians were drawn to the mandolin, but a number of professional mandolinists in the area were highly respected as teachers and soloists.
