Using Music To Teach English As A Second Language: A Guide To The Use Of Song Lyrics, Peter M. Carney
Using Music To Teach English As A Second Language: A Guide To The Use Of Song Lyrics, Peter M. Carney
MA TESOL Collection
This project consists of two parts: the first is a "guide", which lists seven distinct subject areas that can be taught or reinforced through the use of song lyrics. These seven areas are: Grammar/Structure; Conversation; Vocabulary; Idioms, Colloquial Expressions, and Two-word verbs; Figures of Speech ( Metaphors, Similes, Personification, Allusion ); Writing; and Aural/Oral skills. The reason I refer to this as a "guide" is because it presents samples of different types of songs within each category, and suggests ways to use them.
The second part consists of thirty songs, each one of which refers back to at least one …
Paul Hindmith's Sonata For Clarinet And Piano: A Lecture Recital, Chang-Su Yi
Paul Hindmith's Sonata For Clarinet And Piano: A Lecture Recital, Chang-Su Yi
Theses and Dissertations
Paul Hindemith was one of the most distinguished composers of the twentieth century. This thesis will begin with biographical information, highlighting important events in his life. Then, in an effort to understand his compositional style and his philosophy of Gebrauchsmusik, his mastery of classical form, the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano is chosen for a detailed stylistic analysis. Treated in the analysis chapter are form, melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamic, and the technically problematic areas involved such as fingering and ensemble with piano. Hindemith's musical style is conservative in form and tonality. Tonality and melodic motives constitute the dominant force throughout …

Valentin Roeser’S Essay On The Clarinet (1764) Background And Commentary, Albert Richard Rice
Valentin Roeser’S Essay On The Clarinet (1764) Background And Commentary, Albert Richard Rice
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Valentin Roeser’s Essai d’instruction à l’usage de ceux qui composent pour la clarinette et le cor is the earliest treatise on instrumentation and the first theoretical study of the clarinet. Comparisons are drawn with other eighteenth-century instructional materials, e.g. Francoeur’s Diapason général, La Borde’s Essai sur la musique, and Vanderhagen’s Méthode nouvelle et raisonnée pour la clarinette. A history of the chalumeau and two-keyed clarinet is presented, along with a biographical sketch of Roeser and an English translation of the first section of the Essai. Appendices include a checklist of Roeser’s writings and a list of eighteenth-century music using the …

The Decisive Turn : Chambonnières As Inspirer Of The French Baroque Organ Style, Rodney Craig Atkinson
The Decisive Turn : Chambonnières As Inspirer Of The French Baroque Organ Style, Rodney Craig Atkinson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
If we are to account for a “decisive turn,” four questions must be asked, based upon the preceding considerations. First, what was the artistic ambience in seventeenth-century France that could have imposed a secular keyboard style upon a church-associated instrument? Second, what harpsichord composer or composers had sufficient contact with these organists to influence them to use a more secular style? Third, what stylistic similarities exist between that composer and the organists whose work he may have influenced? Fourth, are any of the same stylistic similarities present in the organ works of other seventeenth-century organ composers?
By answering these questions, …
