Unknown Pages Of Felix Yanov-Yanovsky's Creative Work: The Romantic Overture, Rimma Radman
Unknown Pages Of Felix Yanov-Yanovsky's Creative Work: The Romantic Overture, Rimma Radman
Eurasian music science journal
Felix Markovich Yanov-Yanovsky is one of the most prominent composers of the Republic of Uzbekistan. His creativity has been studied in detail in many musicological works. However, the oeuvre of F. Yanov-Yanovsky also contains pieces unknown to musicology, including the "Romantic Overture" for a symphony orchestra, which became the object of research in this article. The main goal of the study is to replenish the history of the development of the overture genre in Uzbekistan, as well as to supplement the general understanding of the F. Yanov-Yanovsky creativity. The material for the investigation is a previously unstudied manuscript of the …

Dedication To Tagore By Mustafo Bafoev (On The Problem Of Studying Composer's Creativity In The Context Of Monodial Thinking), Alina Kutluchurina
Eurasian music science journal
This article focuses on the problem of understanding the Uzbek composer's creativity of the last decades in the context of monodies (national) thinking. The traditional Uzbek monody, represented by such high genres of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind as Ashula, Biga Ashula, makoms, and modern composer's creativity, are two self-developing areas carrying the idea of coexistence and interaction. Presenting a complex and poorly researched area of modern music science, monody is understood not as a type of warehouse (facture), but as a type of thinking, first systematized by the researcher S.P. Galitsa in the work "Theoretical issues of monody". …
The Mulberry Tree, The Birds And The Divine In The Music Of The Dotār In Khorāssān (Iran), Farrokh Vahabzadeh
The Mulberry Tree, The Birds And The Divine In The Music Of The Dotār In Khorāssān (Iran), Farrokh Vahabzadeh
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
The relationship between music and environment plays an important role both in musical compositions and in research on music. The paper is about an anthropological study on the relationship between music of the long-necked lute dotār and the environment, in the region of Khorāssān in Iran. By examining the close relationship between the mulberry tree, birds, metaphor and music of dotār, we will try to show how the environmental factors, data or aspects can be directly or indirectly related to the music, particularly through the symbolism of Sufi beliefs in the region. These relationships to the nature are strongly linked …
Ecojustice, Religious Folklife And A Sound Ecology, Jeff Todd Titon
Ecojustice, Religious Folklife And A Sound Ecology, Jeff Todd Titon
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Folk, traditional, and indigenous ecological knowledges have a significant role to play in ecojustice. A case study in the traditional ecological knowledge among one of the religious communities with whom I have spent several decades illustrates how they embody the main principle and three fields of an ecological rationality: the community of inter-related beings; the ways the beings participate in that community or place; and the relations of nature and the nonhuman world to humans and human nature. Ecological rationality stands in contrast to economic rationality, a branch of instrumental reason exemplified by what economists call rational choice theory. An …
“A Gentle, Angry People”: Music In A Quaker Nonviolent Direct-Action Campaign To Power Local Green Jobs, Benjamin A. Safran
“A Gentle, Angry People”: Music In A Quaker Nonviolent Direct-Action Campaign To Power Local Green Jobs, Benjamin A. Safran
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
While the use of spiritual music in non-violent resistance is noted by such scholars as Thomas Turino (2008), one not might expect music to play a large role in a Quaker-led non-violent direct action campaign. Even though Quakerism is known for its historical animosity toward music, I argue that Quakerism's historic values have in fact fostered a robust musical culture within Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT) and shaped its ability to function effectively as a "rebel" non-violent direct action group. Music is used to summon courage and unity within scary actions. The “gentle” Quaker aesthetic may meanwhile partially mask or …
"No Human Ever Made A Cathedral Such As This": Scoping The Ecology Of The Carols By Candlelight Effect In Australia's Open-Air Environments, Robin Ryan
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
During Australia’s dry December, traditional and popular forms of caroling shape the sight and sound of the key Christian festival of Christmas. Creative connections between belief, place, and music are characteristically manifest in focused open-air environments of beach, bushland or park. Reasoning from gospel belief that the very first “Christmas carol” emanated from a heavenly host of angels singing to an audience of shepherds in a field, caroling alfresco is an appropriate activity. How, then, do Australian caroling venues become conducive to environmental spheres of sound and influence? While the annual mass Carols by Candlelight concerts televised from Melbourne and …
Conch Calls Into The Anthropocene: Pututus As Instruments Of Human-Environmental Relations At Monumental ChavíN, Miriam A. Kolar
Conch Calls Into The Anthropocene: Pututus As Instruments Of Human-Environmental Relations At Monumental ChavíN, Miriam A. Kolar
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Pututus, conch shell musical horns, are known in the Andes as annunciatory devices enabling their players to call across long distances. Beyond their iconic call, the sonic and gestural versatility possible in pututu performance constitutes dynamical evidence for prehistorical uses and site-specific cultural valuations of these multifaceted ritual instruments. Pututus appear in drawings created during the Spanish conquest and colonization of the Andes, and intact shell horns have been excavated from monumental architecture in Perú preceding the Inca by more than two millennia. At the late Andean Formative center at Chavín de Huántar, Perú, a well-preserved ceremonial complex active …
The Musical Poetics Of Witness: Two Anthropocene Journeys, Heidi Hart
The Musical Poetics Of Witness: Two Anthropocene Journeys, Heidi Hart
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Kerstin Ekman’s The Forest of Hours (first published in Swedish in 1988) and Jenny Erpenbeck’s Visitation(published in German as Heimsuchung in 2008) span two decades and two countries, but both novels reach across far larger epochs, in their respective journeys from Europe’s glacial prehistory through the Dark Ages and the Thirty Years War, and through the twentieth century’s collective trauma. Though disagreement persists on when the Anthropocene began to leave its mark in stone, contemporary fiction often registers its traces through a marginally human witness who somehow survives generation after generation, recording in word or action what he or …

I Am Still On My Way: The Influence Of Motivation In Transforming Identities, Zijia Cheng
I Am Still On My Way: The Influence Of Motivation In Transforming Identities, Zijia Cheng
The Qualitative Report
This article explores how my identities were transformed from a piano learner and player to a piano teacher and researcher by employing motivation. My musical background, piano learning experience, understanding and knowledge have formed me as a piano learner and player. My musical identities provide motivation which influences the establishment of my new identities. To investigate my background, an autoethnographical method was employed. Through this qualitative study, I found that my identity, interests and choices of research methodologies in music education are influenced by my understandings and beliefs gained from my own learning experience.

The Observed Effects Of Recreation Jamstix™ Use On Mood: A Pilot Study, Destiny Henn
The Observed Effects Of Recreation Jamstix™ Use On Mood: A Pilot Study, Destiny Henn
Augsburg Honors Review
The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the changes in mood before and after a one time improvisation with a Jamstik™ in order to understand if and how the experience will produce a statistically significant method for quantitatively addressing mood in music therapy. Participants (N: 15) were a convenience sample of male and female college students. Using the Quick Mood Scale (Woodruffe-Peacock, Turnbull, Johnson, Elahi, & Preston, 1998), this research compared pre- and post-test measures in participants' moods after a 15 minute improvisation session with the Jamstik™ while the researcher accompanied on a drum. Results indicated immediate and …

Basque Radical Rock: The Punk Ethos In Basque Identity, Edurne Arostegui
Basque Radical Rock: The Punk Ethos In Basque Identity, Edurne Arostegui
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
This paper aims to chart the origins of the so-called Basque Radical Rock movement and its varied use by different social groups, from political organizations of the time to anarchist, marginalized youth needing to express the pessimistic view of their present circumstances. Basque Radical Rock represented a growing sense of modern Basqueness and difference that shaped the scene, moving away from pastoral images toward urban decadence. Although politics did influence the growth and spread of music throughout the Basque Country, many did not feel represented by these causes. The youth’s backlash against socio-economic conditions and their nihilistic view of the …

Developing Creativity Through Enhanced Communication And Teamwork In Engineering, Frederick Burrack
Developing Creativity Through Enhanced Communication And Teamwork In Engineering, Frederick Burrack
Educational Considerations
Engineers need to address problems through multiple lenses and consider solutions that stray from the most efficient linear consideration. In higher-education training of future engineers, bringing together learning experiences from the liberal arts into learning processes for engineering can enhance the development of creativity and communication skills, and expand conceptions of teamwork. To prepare future generations of engineers, it has been found that experimentation with curricula that intersects educational areas outside of engineering can enhance student competence in ways that is useful to their future success. This study explored intersecting electrical engineering curriculum with creative arts, specifically music composition. Exposure …
Problem-Seeking In Teacher Education: Empowering Students To Grapple With The Complexities Of The Profession, Julie Ballantyne, Libby Flynn, Tammie Olm-Madden
Problem-Seeking In Teacher Education: Empowering Students To Grapple With The Complexities Of The Profession, Julie Ballantyne, Libby Flynn, Tammie Olm-Madden
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Preparing teachers for the realities of the profession is an ongoing concern for teacher education providers. In a climate where the future of teaching is largely unknown and the issues to be faced by teachers throughout their career largely imagined, the ability to identify and solve problems becomes increasingly important. This paper documents an evaluation of a pilot approach to preparing pre-service teachers for the realities of their profession. This approach, which centred on students utilising mobile technologies to problem-seek, was evaluated in terms of students’ perceived preparedness for the profession and their development of problem-solving skills and strategies. Results …

Music Theory Examples In Video Game Music, Brent Ferguson
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
This living document is a list of theory concepts in video game music. These examples are meant to be a supplement in the music theory classroom. Each composer is linked to a wiki the first time they are mentioned. Transcribers (trans.) and arrangers (arr.) are credited for each example. The song title link leads to a YouTube video of the cue. The transcriber link leads to the respective lead sheet at VGLeadSheets.com. I believe music theory is highly interpretative; what I hear may not be what someone else hears. If you hear something different or feel something is blatantly wrong, …

G. P. Telemann’S Exercises In Singing, Keyboard-Playing, And Thoroughbass (Ed. And Trans. Derek Remeš), Derek Remeš
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
In recent years, scholars and pedagogues alike have increasingly recognized the creative potential of thoroughbass. Yet too often, thoroughbass instruction today still lacks good models. G. P. Telemann’s Exercises in Singing, Keyboard-Playing, and Thoroughbass (1733–34) fills this need. This collection contains forty-eight short, simple arias with thoroughbass realizations by Telemann himself. Telemann also provides brief commentary to each aria. This important collection is presented here for the first time as a modern pedagogical edition with English translation (Vol. 1), worksheets for realization (Vol. 2), and audio recordings (with and without voice part). As Telemann’s title suggests, the didactic possibilities are …
