Music Next To Theology: The Impact And Influence Of Martin Luther's Reformation On Johann Sebastian Bach, James H. Ryan Oct 2019

Music Next To Theology: The Impact And Influence Of Martin Luther's Reformation On Johann Sebastian Bach, James H. Ryan

Musical Offerings

The artistic figure and music of Johann Sebastian Bach looms large in the history of Western arts and culture. His influences were many, but one strong influence in his life's work was that of the Protestant Reformation and the theology of the Lutheran church. Through this research, it is evident that Bach strongly held to the doctrines and theology of the Lutheran church and that his employment in the Lutheran church was not merely a vocation for him, but an outward expression of his inward religious and theological conviction. This position is evidenced by the writings and teachings of Martin …

Understanding The Cultural And Nationalistic Impacts Of The Moguchaya Kuchka, Austin M. Doub Oct 2019

Understanding The Cultural And Nationalistic Impacts Of The Moguchaya Kuchka, Austin M. Doub

Musical Offerings

This paper explores Russian culture beginning in the mid nineteenth-century as the leading group of composers and musicians known as the moguchaya kuchka, or The Mighty Five, sought to influence Russian culture and develop a "pure" school of Russian music amid rampant westernization. Comprised of César Cui, Alexander Borodin, Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, this group of inspired musicians opposed westernization and supported Official Nationalism by the incorporation of folklore, local village traditions, and promotion of their Tsar as a supreme political leader. In particular, the works of Balakirev, Cui, and Mussorgsky established cultural pride and contributed …

Enhanced By The Dance: A Guide To An Informed Interpretation Of Piano Literature Inspired By Nineteenth-Century Social Dances, Alicia Williams Apr 2019

Enhanced By The Dance: A Guide To An Informed Interpretation Of Piano Literature Inspired By Nineteenth-Century Social Dances, Alicia Williams

B.A. in Music Senior Capstone Projects

The social dances of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries consisted mainly of French court dances. Spread through the influence of King Louis XIV of France, the highly technical aristocratic dances reigned. The French Revolution, however, effectively extinguished all but the minuet when simpler dances took their place.

The social dances of the nineteenth century concentrated on pleasurable experience. While the minuet and other French court dances involved no more than the touching of the hands, the new couple dances allowed dancers to be in a close embrace. Participatory group dances were likewise revolutionary in that a person’s place or rank …

Robert Marcellus: The Art Of Clarinet Playing And Teaching, Jacob Ludwig

B.A. in Music Senior Capstone Projects

So few clarinetists are found to be an exceptional blend of both performer and pedagogue. Robert Marcellus exemplified this blend to a very high degree. From 1945 to 1973, Marcellus sustained a remarkable playing career as a clarinetist in two of the major orchestras in the United States, in addition to a professional teaching career spanning from 1959 to 1994. This project aims to prove the long-lasting impact of this master performer and pedagogue in the world of professional clarinet performance by means of his teaching. This has been preserved by two primary means, through recorded summer masterclasses held at …

Emanuel Bach: A Composer Ahead Of His Time, Tyler Dellaperute Apr 2019

Emanuel Bach: A Composer Ahead Of His Time, Tyler Dellaperute

Musical Offerings

Up until recently, many musicologists perceived music history through the lens of what is known as the “linear view.” This is the idea that one “musical period” seamlessly gave way to another, with brief transitionary periods to bridge the gaps. As a result, composers were expected to fall neatly into categories depending on their chronological placement. For this reason, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the eldest son of J. S. Bach, was (and still is) regarded as merely the bridge between the late Baroque style and that of the Viennese Classicists. In the past half-century, however, scholars have begun to study …

Shostakovich And The Memoirs, Hanna Bahorik Apr 2019

Shostakovich And The Memoirs, Hanna Bahorik

Musical Offerings

The life, politics, and music of Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich have been subjects of extreme controversy. Despite the turmoil of his dealings with Stalin, many people thought of him as a loyal servant of Russia and a masterful composer. It was not until the publication in 1979 of a book called Testimony: The Memoirs of Dmitri Shostakovich surfaced that debates began to take form that would eventually charge into the realm of violent disputes from many sides. This book, written by Solomon Volkov, portrayed Shostakovich as a bitter dissident. One year later, an American researcher and specialist in Russian and Soviet …

A Christian Response To The Impact Of Nietzschean Philosophy On Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, Amanda N. Staufer Apr 2019

A Christian Response To The Impact Of Nietzschean Philosophy On Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, Amanda N. Staufer

Musical Offerings

This article explores the way Friedrich Nietzsche’s worldview influenced the compositions of Richard Strauss, specifically Strauss’s most famous work—a tone poem called Also sprach Zarathustra. This tone poem is a fascinating piece of music because it reflects Strauss’s philosophical inquiries into the nature and meaning of life. Although Strauss left relatively limited explanations of Also sprach Zarathustra, his few words regarding the tone poem reveal his intention to convey in music an idea of man’s evolution from his original state up to Nietzsche’s idea of a superman. First, this article surveys the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche as it is displayed …

Bel Canto: An Analysis From Birth And Background To Musical Benefaction, Kaitlin Kohler Apr 2019

Bel Canto: An Analysis From Birth And Background To Musical Benefaction, Kaitlin Kohler

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Since the beginning of time, singing has been celebrated. Although opera itself was not properly established until the seventeenth century, drama and music have existed since the world’s genesis. It is difficult to imagine exactly what singing would have been like in ancient times, but the Bible and other ancient documents describe singing as an important factor in community—singing is meant to be beautiful and enjoyable. As the centuries pass on, a common thread of music history is the quest for beautiful singing. Composers each try to outdo their predecessors, coming up with new ways for vocalists to shine. They …

The Court Of Burgundy : A Musically Fluent Society, Elizabeth Lee Ferris Apr 2019

The Court Of Burgundy : A Musically Fluent Society, Elizabeth Lee Ferris

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

The court of Burgundy supported music in the daily life for reasons spanning from religious practice to showing off the wealth of the duke. The importance of hearing different styles of music was emphasized through the patrons of the court of Burgundy. The culture of Burgundy supported music and made it available to most people. This was possible because their land provided safe travel amongst it and they were well off politically and economically. The practice and performance of music were supported in the daily routine through the church and organizations that patrons sponsored. It must first be understood that …

A Musical Reformation: Martin Luther’S Influence On Sacred Music, Lydia Sarver Apr 2019

A Musical Reformation: Martin Luther’S Influence On Sacred Music, Lydia Sarver

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Martin Luther stands at the focal point of the Protestant Reformation, and while history glorifies him as a groundbreaking theologian, little attention is given to his liturgical reformation. Studies that do observe Luther’s hymns, generally focus on Luther’s appreciation for music as a tool to promote the message of the Reformation in the vernacular, thereby neglecting Luther’s systematic understanding of music and its impact on future compositions. Therefore, this article defends Martin Luther’s significant influence on the development of sacred music and his impact on future composers, culminating in the work of J.S. Bach. It first chronologically surveys the history …
