This portfolio is a collection of projects from throughout my education at Fairhaven. Included is a variety of mediums, including audio recordings, music, creative works, interviews, and papers that reflect my Fairhaven Concentration. As such, the portfolio is organized in such a way as to reflect the three core components of my concentration - the technical, artistic, and cultural elements of audio. Flexi discs, also known as phonosheets and Soundsheets, are “flexible” plastic sheets that can be played on turntables. This audio format was used for a wide variety of purposes including promotional materials, giveaways, and inserts into magazines, stemming from their origins in playable chocolate discs in the early 1900s (Parks, 2018). At one point in time it was a $9 million dollar business, with the U.S. government as one of the top users of the technology (Penchansky, 1979). Their disposable nature, weight, ability to print directly on material, and affordable manufacturing made the flexi disc an alternative to vinyl pressings. …

The presence of music is a visceral part of the human experience and its influence on cognitive function has become a growing area of research in psychology. In particular, perceptual properties of music (mood and arousal) have been shown to significantly affect performance. There has been minimal research in the field on the interaction of these perceptual properties and their influence on attentional processes. This research study focused on the effects of musical mood and musical arousal on visual attention. This presentation explores the dual recorded legacies of the Grateful Dead: the official legacy of studio and live albums, controlled by the band and their record companies, and the unofficial legacy of concert recordings, controlled by the fans. The presentation includes a discussion of the Thanksgiving Day Massacre (when on November 22, 2005, all Grateful Dead shows were removed from the Live Music Archive) and the incident's effect on band/fan and official/unofficial recorded legacy cooperations and conflicts.

This presentation examined implementation of Variations 6.0 (open-source system) at UConn from the perspective of a music librarian. Focus is placed on the importance of collaboration between University Library ITS and the M&DA Library, as well as the creation of a realistic workflow model, pilot timeline, and any challenges that were met along the way. Additionally, the decision behind choosing Variations 6.0 as a possible replacement for the current digital audio reserve system (at UConn) is discussed and the implications associated with providing streaming access to albums rather than single-tracks. Updates regarding changes made to WCL since the Music OCLC User Group (MOUG) 2009/10 report are discussed and compared to the current searching capabilities of WCL. Other issues and observations not discussed in the MOUG report are also examined. A Hybrid Curriculum Of Private And Group Lessons For College Clarinet & Saxophone Studio Instruction, John M. Cipolla

This model of teaching presents a curriculum that blends traditional one-on-one private college studio instruction on the clarinet and saxophone with small group lessons. Each student receives a weekly forty-minute private lesson and a twenty-minute group lesson. This hybrid model of teaching is an approach that, for the administrator, (1) increases student credit hour production because more students can be taught in fewer hours (2) addresses the increasing state pressure to reduce degree credit hours by including chamber music in the studio curriculum (3) supports retention efforts by helping freshmen acclimate to college through camaraderie developed in groups. I have always enjoyed the challenge music has given me. I have found very few disciplines that can give a work ethic while engaging one’s emotions. Music connects the analytical left side of the brain while uniting itself with the expressive right side of the brain. I began playing trumpet at ten years old and switched to the euphonium (a lower brass instrument with the range of a trombone but the sound of a French horn) in sixth grade when I got braces. Art Imitates Life: Violence And The Music Of Metal And Rap, Gordon A. Crews, Angela D. Crews

The purpose of this presentation is to explore the similar evolution's of Black Metal and Gangsta Rap musical genres. The authors argue the following similarities exist: 1) different cultures and statements being made, but violence is a common thread (outcomes of violence and societal responses), 2) the music and lyrics in both reflect their cultures, histories, and lives, and, 3) there is a strong musical and lyrical expression of violence related to the behavioral expression of violence among the artists and the fans in both genres. Finally, the authors question whether art imitates life or life imitates art.

The Periodical Cat At The College Of St. Catherine, Amy M. Shaw

This presentation, which was part of a session titled "Improving Access to E-Journals," describes a local solution to tracking the library's print and electronic journal holdings. This solution, called The Periodical Cat, served our campus community well until we were able to invest in a commercial knowledgebase. The Periodical Cat used a Microsoft Access database to produce an alphabetical, integrated list of journals in all formats, available on the library's website.
