The Christian of today has the weighty task of discerning biblical truth in the midst of widely varying perspectives on every matter imaginable—especially in the healthcare setting. This essay aims to bring clarity to this mission by outlining the basic content of a biblical worldview, the defining characteristics of the nursing profession, and how the Christian with a biblical worldview approaches two specific areas of contention within the nursing profession.

Channels: Where Disciplines Meet

The intertwinement of mother-daughter psyches throughout the early developmental process bonds maternal and filial parties up unto differentiation, at which point the child comes to understand her status as an individual and her mother’s status as a separate entity. However, when trauma is introduced midway through the differentiation process, this psychological phenomenon may be hindered, stunting the advanced personal development of the daughter. Abandoned by loss, she may subconsciously fall victim to repressive defenses, insufficient socialization, and destructive behaviors.

Music therapy is a field of psychology and psychotherapy that exists under the broad field of study known as expressive arts therapy. This form of therapy is experiential in nature, and it gives participants vehicles through which they can tell their stories and share their emotions while actively exploring their thoughts. Government authorities in Bangladesh recently were placed in an awkward and extraordinary position of having to make a presumably difficult decision: how to respond to a man’s request to have his two sons and grandson euthanized. This is an extraordinary request for a developing country’s health service authorities to consider, especially in the context of a Muslim-majority population where any appeal to the legitimacy of suicide (and, by extension, physician-assisted suicide) would be automatically rejected as contrary to Islamic moral and jurisprudential principles. Living with cancer is associated with significant psychological strain. The prevalence and severity of this distress varies according to the time, type, and stage of cancer, as well as other variables including treatment regimen, side effects, and prognosis. More often than not, these struggles are neglected as part of the traditional cancer care plan. Yet, if left unaddressed, emotional strain can add to the suffering caused by cancer by negatively affecting treatment compliance. This paper discusses the methods used in Catholic Social Teaching (CST), a part of the Catholic Moral Tradition (CMT), as applied to bioethical problem solving and decision-making. In order to apply CST to a concrete bioethical problem and to analyze the methods used in CST, the nature and extent of the obligation to provide artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH) to patients in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) is addressed. Since its inception, the Christian church has emphasized physical healing alongside spiritual healing. The Roman Catholics and Southern Baptists established their first hospitals in America in the mid-nineteenth and late-nineteenth centuries respectively. While a number of hospitals bear the names Catholic or Baptist, they do not all necessarily possess the same religious character they once did. This research paper compares and contrasts the hospital ministries of the two Christian sub-groups. It concludes that Roman Catholic hospitals have stayed more true to their religious identity than Southern Baptist hospitals. On Ryan Peterson’s reading of Martin Luther, the imago Dei (iD) is a human’s capacity to experience God. Traditionally, Christians have understood the iD to be a property that a) qualitatively separates all human beings from all non-human animals and b) gives humans a greater moral worth than non-human animals. If Peterson’s Luther is right, humans made in the iD and no other material created things have the capacity to experience God, and this capacity makes them worth more, morally, than non-human animals.

In keeping with God’s desire for the salvation of all, Christians should work towards that goal. From an evangelical Christian perspective, upon death, the status of one’s soul is fixed, bound either for heaven or hell.

The use of contraceptives has been controversial in recent days, especially concerning the government mandate for insurance and health care companies to financially cover contraceptives for their policy holders. The term ‘contraceptive’ includes anything that deliberately prevents conception or impregnation, including condoms, birth control pills, intrauterine methods, and barrier methods (Merriam-Webster, 2013). Music therapy (MT) is defined as, “the systematic use of music or musical elements-along with the resulting interpersonal relationship with a trained music therapist to achieve optimal health outcomes…” (The Effectiveness, 2010). Nurses are able to implement music therapy in care. Decreasing fear, anxiety, and ultimately pain will enhance the patient’s experience at the hospital and will lessen the burden of performing care on the patient, decrease stress on caregivers, and ease the provision of care on health professionals.

Limited research has been conducted concerning the effects of music therapy in depressed individuals with dementia. Music therapy is a simple, non-invasive, and inexpensive treatment in relation to pharmaceutical interventions and possibly even some forms of cognitive therapies. Depression, a disabling disease that can cause a reduction in quality of life and loss of general functioning, affects more than 6.5 million of the 35 million Americans aged 65 years or older. 74% of older adults remain depressed one year after general treatment with pharmaceutical agents.

Music As Therapy: Treating The Effects Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Christina Sidaras

B.A. in Music Senior Capstone Projects

This senior project deals with music therapy and methods used especially with Alzheimer’s patients. Topics concerning music therapy include definitions of music therapy, the history of music therapy, and the training necessary to become a licensed music therapist. The research includes general information concerning Alzheimer’s disease as well as its history and symptoms. In addition to conducting research, the music therapy methods were employed with Alzheimer’s patients at the Brookhaven Retirement Community’s Alzheimer’s Unit in Brookville, Ohio. With the guidance of research, professional music therapists, and medical personnel, positive feedback was observed in the patients’ responses.
