The English-Speaking Librarians' Club Of The Ukrainian Library Association, G. Jaia Barrett, Janet Dolya
The English-Speaking Librarians' Club Of The Ukrainian Library Association, G. Jaia Barrett, Janet Dolya
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
We decided to tell this story of the English-Speaking Librarians' Club in this article with the hope that English-speaking librarians living and visiting elsewhere in the former Soviet Union will look for similar opportunities. To our knowledge, none of the library associations in the other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States have yet established such a professional unit. For readers in the U.S., we add a word about the name of the group. The word "club" is commonly used in Ukraine for groups that come together around a common agenda but it does not carry the connotations associated with …

"Collaborative Support For The School Of Education: A Joint Instructional Technology And Library Needs Assessment Program.", Terry Taylor, H Bryan, Mickey Ann Hinojosa
Staff Publications - University Libraries
DePaul's School of Education was the first implementation of a Needs Assessment designed jointly by the university's Instructional Technology Development (ITD) area and the University Libraries. The goals for the Needs Assessment were to identify areas in which an expanded, unified and comprehensive faculty development training and support package would both address faculty's perceived needs while also improving adoption of existing instructional technologies and/or services. The Library's education bibliographer and the ITD consultant for education interviewed faculty representing a cross section of departments and programs as well as technological expertise. The results were analyzed; issues were sorted according to faculty …
Music Collections In American Public Libraries, Linda B. Fairtile, Karen M. Burke
Music Collections In American Public Libraries, Linda B. Fairtile, Karen M. Burke
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
This article presents a broad survey of music collections in public libraries in the United States. Characteristics common to the majority of American public libraries are discussed, including origin, funding, and mission as an educational institution. Using a 1949 survey compiled by Otto Luening, Music Materials and the Public Library, as a basis for comparison, the authors surveyed seven libraries representing one or more of the following communities: small towns, school districts with nationally recognized music education programs, large cities, and locations associated recognizably "American" musical styles (e.g., New Orleans and jazz). The results this informal web survey demonstrate …

The Jewish Community Library In Vienna: From Dispersion And Destruction To Partial Restoration, Richard Hacken
The Jewish Community Library In Vienna: From Dispersion And Destruction To Partial Restoration, Richard Hacken
Faculty Publications
On 25 October 2000, Austria’s first memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust was unveiled at the Judenplatz in Vienna. Conceived by Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal and designed by British sculptress Rachel Whiteread in the form of a nameless library, a concrete block displays shelves of books with their spines turned to the inside, enclosing an area made inaccessible by a permanently locked door. The outer memorial is designed to represent Jewish culture and learning that were lost forever in the Holocaust, while the empty space within symbolises the many readers of the library who did not live on. Parallel …

The Oxford Guide To Style, Priscilla Finley
Library Faculty Publications
Oxford's style manual will be essential to users previously dependent on Hart's Rules for Compositors and Readers (39th ed., 1986)--those preparing manuscripts for Oxford University Press and other British publishers--which Ritter revises and enlarges. Chapters cover general publication topics such as front matter and preparation of copy and proofs; editorial issues like punctuation, numbers, and capitalization; special conventions regarding science and mathematics; and "specialist subjects" including British and EU law, music, poetry, drama, and sacred works.

"The Homosexual" As Problem Patron, Polly Thistlethwaite
"The Homosexual" As Problem Patron, Polly Thistlethwaite
Publications and Research
Libraries host a range of human activity, some of which is overtly sexual. What's a librarian to do about public displays of affection? cruising? public sex? First, we read up on the issue. Unfortunately, problem patron library literature is spotted with vivid illustrations of irrational bias against gay men, male-to-female transgender women, and men-cruising-men. It also discounts the private nature of most consensual sex in public places. This article discusses sex and gender biases in library literature, arguing that gender equitable, privacy-respecting practices will better serve librarians administering public space.
