Adult Catechesis: Cognition And Application For The Christian Life, Jason D. Gudim
Adult Catechesis: Cognition And Application For The Christian Life, Jason D. Gudim
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Gudim, Jason D. “Adult Catechesis as Formation and Habitus for the Christian Life.” Doctor of Ministry. Major Applied Project, Concordia Seminary, 2021. 127 pp.
The Small and Large Catechisms are a central part of confessional Lutheran theology. Catechism instruction is built into the practice of confirmation. But for many Lutherans, catechesis stops at confirmation, with some never opening their catechisms again. Built into the Great Commission as a disciple-making process are both baptizing and teaching. Catechesis fits the model in that the people of God are guarding the truth of Scripture that has been handed down to them generation by …

1. Northeast Insulae Project: Context And Analysis, Mark Schuler
The Final Report
This book places the excavation of the northeast insulae at Hippos of the Decapolis, into its historical context, summarizes the archaeological findings, and posits that the site was an urban monastery centered around a healing cult that grew from the veneration of a revered woman and became a monastic infirmary also employing herbals to relieve the suffering in the larger community.

Baptists, Catholics, And The Whole Church: Partners In The Pilgrimage To Unity, Steven R. Harmon
Baptists, Catholics, And The Whole Church: Partners In The Pilgrimage To Unity, Steven R. Harmon
Gardner-Webb University Faculty Sabbatical Presentations
Within the whole church, Baptists and Catholics might seem to be ecclesiological and liturgical polar opposites. The two traditions are arguably more dissimilar from one another than each is from almost any other Christian tradition. Yet they share much in common that can enable them to travel together as fellow pilgrims on the journey toward a more visibly united church. Baptists, Catholics, and the Whole Church: Partners in the Pilgrimage to Unity, the book on which Steven R. Harmon (Professor of Historical Theology, Gardner-Webb University School of Divinity) worked during his Fall 2020 sabbatical research leave, challenges Baptists, Catholics, …

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear: Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Person-Centered Disability Awareness Seminar In A Congregational Setting, Joshua H. Jones
Perfect Love Casts Out Fear: Exploring The Effectiveness Of A Person-Centered Disability Awareness Seminar In A Congregational Setting, Joshua H. Jones
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
People with disabilities and their families frequently experience barriers toward inclusion and belonging in multiple spheres of life. These barriers are also present in Christian congregations. However, many congregations express a godly desire to love people with disabilities and their families without these obstacles.
The Old and New Testaments provide examples of how God’s people sought to love people with disabilities in their midst creatively and intentionally in response to God’s gracious actions, invitation, and command. Recent research in disability studies routinely highlight the necessity of being attentive to the uniqueness of each person with disabilities and his or her …

Right Seeing: Means And End In Patristic Monastic Lives, Jason Horstman
Right Seeing: Means And End In Patristic Monastic Lives, Jason Horstman
Obsculta
Right seeing is a central motif in the biographical Lives of Saints Antony and Macrina. ‘Right seeing’, used here to signify the alignment of one’s vision with truth, is manifest variously as ‘the discernment of spirits’, as firmly hopeful trust in the revelation of the divine, and as perceiving the world from the divine perspective. Manifest in these ways, right seeing is both a guide for ascetic training the telos of which is union with God, and it is the fruit of that very union with God unto which askesis aspires.
Lent Past And Present, Hermann Lilienthal
Lent Past And Present, Hermann Lilienthal
Ebooks
The general title of the book, "LENT-PAST AND PRESENT," will indicate its scope. Not only are the primitive origin, the purpose, and the usages of Lent traced, but an attempt has also been made to apply to our times the principles underlying the institution of Lent.

The Preacher And Missionary War: The Political Role Of Race And Christianity In The 1831 Baptist War, Emilee Dale
The Preacher And Missionary War: The Political Role Of Race And Christianity In The 1831 Baptist War, Emilee Dale
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abolitionists from the Eighteenth Century to the mid-Nineteenth Century tended to be remembered by William Wilberforce, Joseph Soul, Thomas Clarkson, Samuel Bowly, and William Lloyd Garrison. All of these men have been extremely well represented throughout scholarship and the archives. The voices that are often left out of the archives are the men and women who fought on the frontlines for their freedom. Enslaved men and women fought to the death for their freedom and are often overshadowed by White missionaries and abolitionists in the archives. Black leaders often have less representation throughout history and scholarship due to the lack …

Lgbtq+ Inclusion: An Appeal To Stone-Campbell Movement Ideals, Michael Shepherd
Lgbtq+ Inclusion: An Appeal To Stone-Campbell Movement Ideals, Michael Shepherd
Journal of Discipliana
To name exclusion as religiously-motivated violence requires us to confront the ways in which spiritual communities contribute to the marginalization of others, both by-design or as collateral damage. While violence against a minority group can be motivated by various factors, religious belief has been historically and continues to be a significant influence toward violence against the LGBTQ+ community. This presents a paradox for Christians whose sense of who they believe themselves to be (rational) and what they believe about the early and persisting Christian witness (loving) creates a religious tradition that is not fixated on violent expressions of divine commands.
Review Of James L. Gorman, Among The Early Evangelicals, Mark G. Toulouse
Review Of James L. Gorman, Among The Early Evangelicals, Mark G. Toulouse
Journal of Discipliana
Nearly all American religious historians among Disciples have noted, I think, the influences of Rowland Hill, Greville Ewing, the Haldane brothers, and both Glas and Sandeman. What they have not done is show the development of the broader transatlantic evangelical missions movement, and how the four themes of “mission, unity, primitivism, and millennialism” repeatedly showed up through the various missionary societies in London, and in Scotland and Ireland. I think this is Jamey’s main contribution – relating this story, and its connection to the Campbells, in such an organized and compelling way.
Review Of Answered By Fire, Robert D. Cornwall
Review Of Answered By Fire, Robert D. Cornwall
Journal of Discipliana
In August of 1801, a Presbyterian pastor in rural Kentucky hosted an annual communion event that would turn into a massive camp meeting and revival that crossed denominational, ethnic/racial, and gender boundaries. That event is known as the Cane Ridge Revival and it helped launch the Second Great Awakening, which swept across the frontier before it turned back toward the east. The Great Western Revival, of which Cane Ridge was one of the most important contributors, has its origins in the late eighteenth century and continued well into the nineteenth century. The name of that Presbyterian pastor was Barton W. …

Palestinian Evangelical Christian Music In Bethlehem, Israel/Palestine, Abby Smith
Palestinian Evangelical Christian Music In Bethlehem, Israel/Palestine, Abby Smith
Senior Honors Theses
Often the story of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is portrayed as Jewish vs. Muslim, Hebrew vs. Arab. There is little room in the international dialogue for minorities such as Arab Christians. Though Palestinians have a rich culture of Arabic musical and poetic heritage, they are unable to produce their own new songs. In this study I interviewed three members of Immanuel Evangelical Church on their experiences and opinions on local Christian worship. The findings show that Palestinian Christians may feel unable to write worship music because of a prevalent feeling of inadequacy and a lack of musical training. I propose several …
Religious Mega-Events And Their Assemblages In Devotional Pilgrimages: The Case Of Círio De Nazaré In Belém, Pará State, Brazil, José Rogério Lopes, André Luiz Da Silva
Religious Mega-Events And Their Assemblages In Devotional Pilgrimages: The Case Of Círio De Nazaré In Belém, Pará State, Brazil, José Rogério Lopes, André Luiz Da Silva
Journal of Global Catholicism
The article presents a typological categorization of contemporary mega-events and their characteristics, in order to interpret the assemblages mobilized by sectors of the Catholic Church in traditional devotional pilgrimages in the northern region of Brazil. It uses ethnographic accounts of the Círio de Nazaré feast, in Belém, Pará state, Brazil, considered the largest Catholic procession in the West, in order to analyze how the promotion of this event is organized through institutional and market logics that overlap with the religious phenomenon, evincing a contemporary trend. These assemblages open a field of possibilities for institutional religious reproduction and generate concentric flows …

Young Brazilian Catholics Reaffiliating: A Case Study In The City Of Campos, Rj, Brazil, Cecilia L. Mariz, Wânia Amélia Belchior Mesquita, Michelle Piraciaba Araújo
Journal of Global Catholicism
Through a case study in Campos, a northern city of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, this article analyzes reports from young people who state that they have undergone a process of revival or reactivation of their Catholic faith. They all declared to have participated in the “St Andrew’s School of Evangelization.” They also mentioned having experienced an "encounter with God." Their narratives were similar to conversion accounts reported by practitioners of other religious traditions. The interviewees describe faith as a personal choice, and emphasize the need for religious study and the value of religious knowledge. To what extent these values …
Contemporary Brazilian Catholicism And Healing Practices: Notes On Environmentalism And Medicalization, Juliano F. Almeida
Contemporary Brazilian Catholicism And Healing Practices: Notes On Environmentalism And Medicalization, Juliano F. Almeida
Journal of Global Catholicism
Anthropological studies on Brazilian Catholicism traditionally focused on popular variants of this religious practice and their relationship with the official Catholicism. Encouraged by recent anthropological perspectives, which highlight the relevance of devoting researches not only on the margins, but also on the center of social practices, this paper analyzes contemporary practices of Brazilian Catholic friars and priests on health promotion. The analysis of their publications (books that include practices and tips on health and that became best sellers etc.), as well as interviews, allows us to perceive a process of environmentalization on the contemporary Brazilian Catholicism. This process seems to …
Strong Church, Weak Catholicism: Transformations In Brazilian Catholicism, Carlos Alberto Steil, Rodrigo Toniol
Strong Church, Weak Catholicism: Transformations In Brazilian Catholicism, Carlos Alberto Steil, Rodrigo Toniol
Journal of Global Catholicism
In this paper we explore data on Catholicism from the 2010 census in Brazil, as well as other data from the Center for Religious Statistics and Social Investigation. Using these statistics, we question those arguments that explain the reduction in the number of Catholics in Brazilian society as a problem in the institution’s adaptation in response to the challenges of evangelization, or as a lack of ministerial vocations to meet the religious demands of the people. Pursuing an alternative argument, we consider the weakening of the relationship between the Catholic institution and traditional popular Catholicism to be a fundamental aspect …
