The Militarization Of Prayer In America: White And Native American Spiritual Warfare, Elizabeth Mcalister Dec 2015

The Militarization Of Prayer In America: White And Native American Spiritual Warfare, Elizabeth Mcalister

Elizabeth McAlister

This article examines how militarism has come to be one of the generative forces of the prayer practices of millions of Christians across the globe. To understand this process, I focus on the articulation between militarization and aggressive forms of prayer, especially the evangelical warfare prayer developed by North Americans since the 1980s. Against the backdrop of the rise in military spending and neoliberal economic policies, spiritual warfare evangelicals have taken on the project of defending the United States on the “spiritual” plane. They have elaborated a complex theology and prayer practice with a highly militarized discourse and set of …

Pastoral Care: From Past To Present, Ann Marie Kerlin

Ann Marie Kerlin

According to the U.S. National Conference on Mental Health, “Nationally, an estimated 45 million Americans suffer from illnesses like depression, schizophrenia or post-traumatic stress syndrome.” In a speech at this conference, President Obama stated that one out of five Americans experience mental illness in any year. A study published in 2013 surveyed prescription drug use and found that the second most common prescribed drugs were anti-depressants. Obviously there is a great demand for counseling and psychological care in the United States, and both secular and religious approaches to care are available. The purpose of this article is to review briefly …

John Wesley: His Personal Spiritual Awakening, G. Dan Harris Jan 2014

John Wesley: His Personal Spiritual Awakening, G. Dan Harris

G. Dan Harris

John Wesley became one of the key revival leaders that God used during the first Great Awakening in Europe and America. Wesley, as we can see in his words above, understood that a powerful movement of God was desperately needed. Little did he know that in the coming decades, Wesley, along with a number of other great men of the Christian Church, would be used by God to bring about one of the most powerful Spiritual Awakenings in history. But before Wesley could be used by God for a time such as this, he first needed to experience his own …

Leveraging Library Technknowledgie - Library Expertise Front And Center In The Digitial Humanities: An Omeka.Net Case Study, M Ryan Hess, Rebecca Cooling

M Ryan Hess

Providing technical know-how to non-technical researchers to promote and preserve their collections online is an emerging niche librarians are filling. Digital humanities partners are sometimes external to the library’s institution. DePaul University Library assisted researchers at the National University of Ireland, Galway in preserving their catalogue of Vincentian documents by migrating metadata from an unstable server to Omeka.net, a hosted web publishing platform designed for cultural institutions. The library proposed Omeka.net after considering the collection’s requirements, the technical abilities of the researchers and their budget. The library contributed their expertise of metadata by analyzing, re-encoding, and cross-walking metadata to Dublin …

Visual Culture Of Baptism In The Middle Ages: Essays On Medieval Fonts, Settings And Beliefs, Harriet Sonne De Torrens, Miguel Torrens Aug 2013

Visual Culture Of Baptism In The Middle Ages: Essays On Medieval Fonts, Settings And Beliefs, Harriet Sonne De Torrens, Miguel Torrens

Harriet M Sonne de Torrens Dr.

Under the guidance of the leading experts on baptismal fonts and the co-directors of the Baptisteria Sacra Index, the world’s only iconographical inventory of baptismal fonts, a research project at the University of Toronto, this collection of essays by a group of European and North American scholars extends the traditional boundaries associated with the study of baptismal fonts. The ‘visual’ is privileged, whether it is in the metaphysical, literary or empirical realms of scholarship, offering a rich understanding of the powerful role of baptism played in medieval and renaissance society. In the quest for a holistic understanding of the vessels, …

Reconsidering The Date Of The Baptismal Font In San Isidoro, Leon, Spain, Harriet M. Sonne De Torrens Dr.

Harriet M Sonne de Torrens Dr.

The baptismal font that stands today in the Cahpel of the Salazares n the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro of Seville in Leon, Spain has been assigned an early eleventh century date, ca. 1000-1050, making it the earliest of all known extant fonts, in both Spain and in the Latin West, that are ornamented with scenes from the life of Christ. This essay reviews the scholarship and proposes a 12th century date based on comparative examples in both Spain and the larger context of the Latin West.

Music Of Worship And The Sanctification Of The Believer, Jonathan D. Twining Apr 2013

Music Of Worship And The Sanctification Of The Believer, Jonathan D. Twining

Jonathan D Twining

Because of its importance in the life of a believer, music should aid in the sanctification process. The debate concerning the use of contemporary music in church worship contexts arises from the belief that musical styles can either encourage or discourage the sanctification of a believer by influencing emotions. The efficiency of music for the purpose of sanctification should be considered by the listener. Music that is associated with unbiblical influences and intentions may not be fit for use in worship settings.

The Formation Of An Evangelist: D. L. Moody's Experience During The American Civil War, Cooper Pasque Jan 2013

The Formation Of An Evangelist: D. L. Moody's Experience During The American Civil War, Cooper Pasque

Cooper Pasque

D.L. Moody was 24 when the Civil War began. Throughout the conflict, he played a complex role that traversed many different settings. He ministered to wounded soldiers on several major battlefields, to Union recruits in a training camp outside Chicago, and even to Confederate prisoners-of-war. Despite all this unique wartime activity, Moody maintained his urban ministry in Chicago and somehow found time to get married. Except for brief chapters in a handful of biographies, historians have produced little work on this phase in Moody’s life. This study, which largely draws upon Moody’s wartime correspondence and the records of the United …

Active Religion: James Ireland, The Separate Baptists, And The Great Awakening In Virginia, 1760-1775, Cooper Pasque Jan 2013

Active Religion: James Ireland, The Separate Baptists, And The Great Awakening In Virginia, 1760-1775, Cooper Pasque

Cooper Pasque

In the mid-eighteenth century, the religious fervor of the Great Awakening entered Virginia. Evangelical Baptists soon threatened to undermine the authority of the Anglican Church and its planter patrons. Despite their efforts to quiet the Baptists, evangelical religion took root in Virginia by the end of the American Revolution. Historical works on these events offer valid but incomplete explanations. Puzzling dynamics in the Virginian context require a more complex interpretation. The life of James Ireland provides a unique window into possible answers. His autobiography provides evidence for what appears to be the most fundamental reason for evangelicalism's successes in Virginia. …

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

This article wants to approach not only the prophecy from the Old Testament’s inside in general, but also the messianic prophecy in particularly. To reach this purpose, the article starts describing work as a minister in the Old Testament during the time of the Hebraic peregrine, one of Israel dynasty and then one of the prophets. Abandonment – Who, How, Why: A Case For A Multifaceted Understanding Of Jesus’ Cry From The Cross In Mark 15:34, G. Dan Harris Jan 2012

Abandonment – Who, How, Why: A Case For A Multifaceted Understanding Of Jesus’ Cry From The Cross In Mark 15:34, G. Dan Harris

G. Dan Harris

The view of Christ bearing our sins on the cross is a necessary component of various atonement theories that exist. Within these atonement theories there exists a need for God’s justice. Therefore, as Christ took these sins of mankind upon Himself, part of the experience that His humanity dealt with was genuine separation. This was not necessarily because the Father somehow had to “look away”; it was rather because mankind’s sins have created a real separation from God and a genuine experience of abandonment. Thus, Christ experienced the abandonment (separation from God) in our place and because of our sins. …

Baptism In Water: Its Foundation, Form And Formula, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor Jun 2011

Baptism In Water: Its Foundation, Form And Formula, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Water baptism is the most common act of worship being carried out in any religious denomination. This article intends to demonstrate that Christian baptism did not occur from now here, but it is the result of an ascending process of purification rituals found in the Old Testament. Also, in the content of the article are presented other forms of baptism. Regarding the formula used in water baptism, the careful reader of the Bible, raises a legitimate question : Why did Jesus Christ command baptism to be done “in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy …
