The Bridge
The day was February 14, 1889, and dusk had just fallen. As one looked over the western Nebraska prairie, the whole world was a huge blanket of glittering snow. The bright beams from the full moon fell upon the white snow, almost making day out of the night. Even the harsh Nebraska landscape was now white and soft, as gentle as a fairyland.

Mary Carrick talks about her young years going to District 3 country schoolhouse just three miles outside of Chadron, Nebraska. The school was one room and had one teacher that changed almost every year. Mary was the only one in her grade until more joined her in the upper grades. Everyone at the school got along, and built a great community that never got into too much trouble. Mary spends her time in her interview discussing her fond and positive memories of school functions and festivals and wishes for them to be preserved. A major effect of World War I on American social history was that it focused attention on the nation's apparent difficulty in assimilating the millions of immigrants and their children who had streamed to the United States during the preceding two decades. The national mood, darkened by fears and resentments of long standing and deepened by systematic wartime propaganda, favored the adoption of stringent laws limiting the use of foreign languages, especially in the schools. During the war itself, restrictions were usually extralegal and often the consequences of intense social pressure recklessly applied. After the war, however, many state legislatures …
