Fictions Of Containment In The Spanish Female Picaresque: Architectural Space And Prostitution In The Early Modern Mediterranean, Emily Kuffner

This study examines the interdependence of gender, sexuality and space in the early modern period, which saw the inception of architecture as a discipline and gave rise to the first custodial institutions for women, including convents for reformed prostitutes. Meanwhile, conduct manuals established prescriptive mandates for female use of space, concentrating especially on the liminal spaces of the home. This work traces literary prostitution in the Spanish Mediterranean through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, from the rise of courtesan culture in several key areas through the shift from tolerance of prostitution toward repression. It is the 1880s in Brighton, England, on the coast of the English Channel. A young boy depicts a scene of some of the men who work at sea. “Nearly all my sailor friends on the beach were tattooed. Of course, their tattoos were crude: just an anchor, a primitive attempt at a portrait of Lord Nelson or a declaration of ‘True Love’ made by some other Jack Tar ‘’teween the heaving decks of a sailing-ship’. But a few had fine tattoos, made by Japanese horis or Burmese craftsmen when their ships had docked at Rangoon or Akyab or Yokohama”.1 …

The Perihelion Club of Rock Hill Records consist of minutes, financial statements, membership lists, yearbooks, correspondence and news clippings, concerning the literary activities of the club. The Perihelion Club of Rock Hill was organized in 1898 as a book club. It was federated with the South Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs in 1898 and with the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1929.

What began as a guide for the Jesuit cemetery at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts has become a collection of biographical profiles and an historical timeline written as the College celebrates its dodranbicentennial. The book consists of seven chapters, each dealing with one of the seven 25-year periods that make up the College’s 175 years. Each chapter includes, for its time period, a view of how the College looked, a timeline outlining the important events that occurred and a short biography of the men who died and were buried in the cemetery.
