The University of Maine General Student Senate (GSS) is the fiduciary body of Student Government. It consists of no more than 35 Student Senators who serve as direct representatives of students in their respective colleges. The Vice President of Student Government is the President of the GSS. The GSS has final authority on all Student Government monetary issues, student organization matters and student administrative committee appointments. It also takes official stances on student concerns. Weekly meetings are open to the public and broadcast on the campus channel. The Dean of Men reported to the Director of Student Services (and Registrar) and was later part of the Student Affairs Office. The dean was responsible for student housing and discipline and oversaw the many male student groups on campus including fraternities. There was also a Dean of Women who had similar responsibilities for female students. Part of the role of Dean of Men was to also chair the University of Maine Health Service and Athletic Board. The University of Maine’s Mathematics Club was organized on February 23, 1916 with the objective of promoting interest in the study of mathematics. The membership consisted of all persons connected with the department of mathematics and astronomy, and of any other persons sufficiently interested in mathematics. In 1965, the University of Maine chapter of the national mathematics honor society, Pi Mu Epsilon, was established.

Edward "Ted" M. Holmes was born September 27, 1910, in Montclair, N.J. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1933 and moved to Maine in 1939. Ted received master's degrees from the University of Maine at Orono (1954) and Brown University (1956), and earned his doctorate from the latter in 1962. Ted began college teaching in 1954 at Farmington State Teacher's College, now the University of Maine at Farmington. He came to UMaine in 1956, where he taught English (1956-1977) and then honors courses well into his 80s, eventually retiring in 1995.

The original College of Law (also known as School of Law) began its operations in 1898 and was located in Bangor, Maine in a building at Exchange and State streets. The building and records were destroyed during the 1911 Great Fire of Bangor. Following the fire the School relocated to a house at the corner of Second and Union streets in Bangor (now known as the Farrar building.

In September 1975, the Board of Trustees of the University of Maine approved the creation of a School of Performing Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences. The purpose for such a school was to amalgamate the various performing arts units on the Orono campus into one administrative body within the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Association's purpose was to represent the needs and interests of all professional staff at the University of Maine, specifically insuring adequate and equitable compensation for its members, maintaining proper academic freedom and personal rights, keeping the membership informed of impending administrative and legislative acts of concern, and presenting the faculty's views and desires to both administrations and legislatures.

The papers of Brooks Hamilton, including personal information, correspondence, manuscripts, newspaper articles, course materials, information on public service activities, and materials relating to current legal issues in the field of journalism.

Before joining the University of Maine staff in 1952 Hamilton served as city editor of the Daily Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Maine. During World War II he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was instrumental in the drafting and passage of Maine's "Right to Know" law in 1959.

The Spectator Club collection contains copies of the club constitution, a history of its founding, group photographs of members taken on three different dates, a list of program topics, a few event programs, letters, bills, receipts, and minutes from meetings 1911-2000. Many of the letters offer thanks for support of various causes. Other letters thank the group for gifts and condolences following the death of one of the members. Minutes include detailed accounts of meetings along with lists of officers, members, attendance, speakers, entertainers, topics, dues, expenditures, and treasurer's reports.
