Unsung Heroes Of Richmond: The Extraordinary Feats Of Gilbert Hunt, Elizabeth Van Lew, And Sally Tompkins, Mikaela R. Rosen

Scott T. Allison

This chapter will investigate
the lives of three important citizens of Richmond, Virginia, who have made
important contributions to humanity. First, important definitions and theories
of heroism will be provided. Then the chapter will classify and discuss
the heroism of Richmond’s own Gilbert Hunt, Elizabeth Van Lew, and Sally

why these three heroes have remained largely unknown.

Serbia Under The Swastika: A World War Ii Occupation, Nick Miller Dec 2017

Serbia Under The Swastika: A World War Ii Occupation, Nick Miller

Nick Miller

Alexander Prusin's Serbia under the Swastika is a systematic analysis of German occupation and administration of Serbia during World War II, providing nuanced discussions of the people, events, and processes that gave the period meaning. It is based on an impressive array of archival materials and a thorough reading of secondary literature in Serbian, German, Russian, Slovene, French, and English (and perhaps more) languages. It is concise, convincing, and well-written, all in all an excellent book.

E. Claiborne And Lora Robins: The Convergence Of Two Selfless Heroes, Lauren J. Weingarten

Scott T. Allison

By coupling personal histories with theories of heroism, this chapter offers
an analysis of how E. Claiborne Robins and Lora Robins inspired each other
to become heroes, how they saved the University of Richmond with their
supremely generous gift, and how they continued to lead a life of purpose
thereafter.

Saving A University On The Brink: The Heroism Of E. Claiborne And Lora Robins, Lauren J. Weingarten Dec 2017

Saving A University On The Brink: The Heroism Of E. Claiborne And Lora Robins, Lauren J. Weingarten

Scott T. Allison

This article describes the heroic efforts of E. Claiborne and Lora Robins in saving the University of Richmond from the brink of bankruptcy. These two heroes' personal transformations will in part be explained by drawing upon
Allison and Goethals’ (2011) great eight traits of a hero, as well as the need for
a hero to discover his or her missing inner quality. Just how the Robins transformed
the community at the University of Richmond will then be discussed,
taking into account their family’s more recent history of generosity and the
Robins’ image as role models.

Bicycle Messenger Boys And The Evolution Of American Labor Laws, Christopher A. Sweet Dec 2017

Bicycle Messenger Boys And The Evolution Of American Labor Laws, Christopher A. Sweet

Christopher A. Sweet

This article examines how bicycle messenger boys found themselves entwined in evolving American labor laws from 1890-1940. Anti-child labor organizations such as the National Child Labor Committee used exposés of the working conditions of messenger boys to help force passage of the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act. Beyond child labor laws, bicycle messenger boys also shaped workplace liability and worker’s compensation laws. Companies who employed bicycle messengers who were injured or killed on the job usually claimed the boys owned their own bicycles and worked as independent contractors rather than employees therefore absolving themselves of liability.

Mcguffey Readers: Elementary School Reading Books, Samuel J. Smith Dec 2017

Mcguffey Readers: Elementary School Reading Books, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

With over 122 million copies sold from 1838 to 1920, the McGuffey Eclectic Readers taught more Americans to read than any other textbook. Initial publication coincided with a unique period in United States history as the West was settled, newly arrived immigrants assimilated, and the common school movement gained momentum. At this time, the nation was at a critical point of forming a distinct identity. These phenomena created a demand for textbooks that would not only meet the practical need for curriculum in developing schools but would also extend prevailing American values both to children new to the frontier and …

Queer Politics In Neoliberal Times (1970s-2010s), Margot Weiss Dec 2017

Queer Politics In Neoliberal Times (1970s-2010s), Margot Weiss

Margot Weiss

Neoliberalism has had a profound effect on post-1970s LGBT/queer cultures and politics. This essay reviews how, by privatizing social services, fostering consumer citizenship, and promoting corporate welfare and urban redevelopment, neoliberal policies have pit “deserving” gays and lesbians against “undeserving” others: the same-sex married couple vs. the “welfare queen,” the gay/lesbian consumer-citizen vs. the poor queer, and the gay gentrifier vs. the “dangerous” other. Historicizing these oppositions reveals the intersections of sexuality, class, gender, race, and social policy that remain central to queer politics today.

Troubling Heritage: Intimate Pasts And Public Memories At Derry/Londonderry’S 'Temple', Margo Shea Dec 2017

Troubling Heritage: Intimate Pasts And Public Memories At Derry/Londonderry’S 'Temple', Margo Shea

Margo Shea

High on the east bank of the River Foyle, literally at ‘the Top of the Hill’ at the highest elevation in the city limits of Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, a temple stood briefly. At 72 feet high, it towered over its surroundings, a thin spire mirroring the city’s cathedral steeples on the river’s opposite bank. The sign at its entrance instructed ‘Leave a memory behind, let go of the past and look to the future.’ Memories relinquished would not remain – at least not in their material forms. ‘Temple’ was made to be ephemeral, built to be consumed in flames on …
