"Some Dreamers Of The Golden Dream": The Construction Of The Golden Age Myth(S) In The Age Of Ottoman Decline, Ian Mclaughlin

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

This paper considers the role and construction of golden age myths in seventeenth-century debates about how to renew the flagging Ottoman Empire. Policymakers and preachers prescribed radically different solutions based on which golden age they idealized—whether the time of the Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century or the reign of Sultan Suleiman in the sixteenth. Throughout most of the 1600s, the pendulum swung back and forth violently depending on which faction had the sultan’s ear. Charismatic mosque preachers like Kadizade Efendi whipped up Istanbul crowds against coffee, while advice writers such as Koçi Bey urged expelling “outsiders” from the military …

Public Art And Alberta's Regionalism, Amanda Buessecker Jul 2018

Public Art And Alberta's Regionalism, Amanda Buessecker

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis is a case study of two contemporary, regionalist public artworks in Alberta: Untitled, by Fraser McGurk, and Alberta Bound Panorama, by Jason Carter. The province’s economic history is outlined as an important background factor to understanding contemporary public artworks. The two artists use symbols such as the train, compass, and grain elevator to connect a contemporary audience with Alberta’s past, reminding today’s residents of the province’s tradition of success. Even in locations that target “tourists,” these paintings use local symbols to emphasize a message of prosperity and unity to the local people of Alberta.

The Psychological Odyssey Of 1909: Carl Gustav Jung's Pivotal Encounter With Sigmund Freud During Their Journey To America, William E. Herman, Axel Fair-Schulz

Swiss American Historical Society Review

M any volumes in the scholarly literature explore the complex evolution of the relationship between Carl Gustav Jung and Sigmund Freud as well as the eventual split between these two influential contributors to psychoanalytic thought and more generally to the field of psychology and other academic fields/professions. The events that transpired during the seven-week journey from Europe to America and back in the autumn of 1909 would serve as a catalyst to not only re-direct the lives of Jung and Freud along different paths , but also re-shape the roadmap of psychoanalytic thinking, clinical applications, and psychology. The 1909 visit …

The Poet Jan Rainis During Swiss Exile, 1906-1920: Internationalism, Nationalism, And The Meaning Of ''A Free Latvia In A Free Russia'', Bryan K. Herman Jun 2018

The Poet Jan Rainis During Swiss Exile, 1906-1920: Internationalism, Nationalism, And The Meaning Of ''A Free Latvia In A Free Russia'', Bryan K. Herman

Swiss American Historical Society Review

T his opening quote appears in the 1949 Stalinist fi lm Rainis, one of several biographical films of cu ltural and scientific figures from the early years of the Cold War. The quote comes at the end of the film , just as Rainis prepares to leave his native Latvia and live under an assumed identity in Switzerland. The scene expresses the tensions of a writer from a relatively small nationality heading to an unknown land . However, instead of finding a strange and unfami liar land, the historic Rainis (Janis Plieksans, I 865-1929) fe lt welcomed and at home …

Mapping The State: Cartographic Representations Of Switzerland, 1530-1865, James T. Lindberg Jun 2018

Mapping The State: Cartographic Representations Of Switzerland, 1530-1865, James T. Lindberg

Swiss American Historical Society Review

T his paper di scusses the relationship between cartography and the emergence of the Swiss state between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Maps are read as texts through an analysis of their visual components and contextualized within broader historical events. Each map illustrates a stage in the developing relationship between political ideas about Swiss territory and the representation of these ideas cartographically. Once space is represented as belonging to a specific polity, that space is 'territorialized' and becomes part of a perceived whole. Borders and related concepts such as ' boundary ' and 'frontier ' are central to this relationship …

Mormon Masses: An Analysis Of The Improvement Era’S Advertisements To The Separate Genders Circa. 1927-1933, Nicole Wechsler, Dr. Rebecca Deschweinitz May 2018

Mormon Masses: An Analysis Of The Improvement Era’S Advertisements To The Separate Genders Circa. 1927-1933, Nicole Wechsler, Dr. Rebecca Deschweinitz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project analyzed two main documents, comparing and contrasting the different LDS youth periodicals, namely the Improvement era and the Young Woman’s Journal. In this project I analyzed advertisements within the Improvement Era during the merger of the Young Woman’s Journal and the Improvement Era with special emphasis on how advertisements are being construed to the different genders before and after the merger in 1929. The Improvement Era is one of the few early LDS periodicals that have preserved the cover art and advertisements, unlike other magazines during this period in which all images were discarded. In so doing …

The Bishop Of Boston: What The Archives Have To Say About A Hero Of Religious Tolerance, Marie Johnson, Dr. George Ryskamp May 2018

The Bishop Of Boston: What The Archives Have To Say About A Hero Of Religious Tolerance, Marie Johnson, Dr. George Ryskamp

Journal of Undergraduate Research

French and American historians have been writing about Bishop Jean Louis Lefebvre de Cheverus for almost a century. However, when I discovered this man, I noticed that an element of his life remained in the shadows—how he united the Catholic and Protestant communities. He was a Catholic Bishop in Boston where Anti-Catholic sentiment was at its height among the Protestants. When he built the first Catholic Cathedral in Boston, it was largely funded by prominent Protestants, among whom was President John Adams. His three decades in Boston came to an end when he was requested by King Louis XIV to …

The Imperial Russian Revision Lists Of The 18th And 19th Century, Joseph B. Everett May 2018

The Imperial Russian Revision Lists Of The 18th And 19th Century, Joseph B. Everett

Faculty Publications

One of the most important resources for social and family historians researching in the former Russian Empire are the revision lists, a series of ten enumerations of the population conducted between 1719 and 1858. Listing the members of each household among taxable classes of people across the Russian Empire, the revisions lists are useful for studying historical population demographics and reconstructing family relationships. An awareness of these records and where to access them can be useful for Slavic librarians to facilitate the research of Russian historians and genealogists. This article provides an overview of the history and content of the …

Catholic Marriage: Discovering French Basque Impediments, Tatum Frampton, Dr. George Ryskamp May 2018

Catholic Marriage: Discovering French Basque Impediments, Tatum Frampton, Dr. George Ryskamp

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1563, the Council of Trent exercised fundamental societal control by enforcing marriage laws within the Catholic church which outlined in detail the process of marriage. Every Catholic marriage required a pre-marriage investigation.1 This new structure forbade couples from marrying within the 4th degree of consanguinity (blood relation) or the 4th degree of affinity (by marriage), nor where there existed a previous betrothal, impotence, one party not a Catholic, or the inability to read the banns if the bride or groom was not from the same diocese, etc. A waiver to any impediment required the overseeing bishop of the …
