A Different Master Of War: The Influence Of The Folk Music Revival On The Antiwar Movement During The Vietnam Era, Isabelle Gillibrand
A Different Master Of War: The Influence Of The Folk Music Revival On The Antiwar Movement During The Vietnam Era, Isabelle Gillibrand
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
Although the folk revival diminished as the United States entered the height of the Vietnam War, it lived on through antiwar activists. Music historians note how folk music was one of the early sparks of antiwar sentiment during the Vietnam era. This research builds on the ideas of previous scholars by analyzing the evolution of folk music from the 1930s to 1960s, how the folk revival's young audience connected to the music, and the influence the folk revival later had during the rise of the Vietnam antiwar movement. The antiwar sentiment expressed in the folk revival carried into antiwar activism, …

Authors Of Independence: Comparing Thomas Paine And Camilo Henríquez As Revolutionary Writers, Sean Gray
Authors Of Independence: Comparing Thomas Paine And Camilo Henríquez As Revolutionary Writers, Sean Gray
History & Classics Student Scholarship
An nineteenth-century Chilean writer, Fr. Camilo Henriquez was a fascinating figure—a Catholic priest whose religious beliefs more closely aligned with Deism, a prolific proponent of Chilean independence, and, for a short while, the president of the Chilean Senate. Because of his role in creating La Aurora, the first Chilean newspaper, Henríquez is often considered the “father of Chilean journalism” and the “mentor of the revolution." But to understand his role in the Chilean independence movement, we must juxtapose him with Thomas Paine, the pamphleteer extraordinaire of the American Revolution. The Enlightenment’s ideals of liberty and equality influenced both men, and, …

Baseball Hall Of Fame Vote, Richard C. Crepeau
Baseball Hall Of Fame Vote, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It was a little over a week ago that I read a small notice about the Baseball Hall of Fame voting for the class of 2020. Those on the ballot were listed, and as always the name of Marvin Miller was on that list. I skimmed over that name muttering to myself something like, “yea, sure, fat chance.” And that would be the end of it for another year. If there was one sure thing, betting that Marvin Miller would be rejected by Hall of Fame voters for the eighth time, was it.

And They Shall Be Men: An Original Anthology & Analysis Of The Modern Male Bildungsroman, Margaret Cox
Senior Honors Theses
The stories that boys have been told about what it means to be a man change throughout history. This study considers the postmodern effect of masculinities, female empowerment, as well as the canon of Western bildungsroman in an attempt to understand how the narratives have changed over the past 50 years. Additionally, an anthology of original fiction illustrates how universal stories persist within the changing social narratives.

The Forgotten Sins Of Robert E. Lee: How A Confederate Icon Became An American Icon, Jennifer Page
The Forgotten Sins Of Robert E. Lee: How A Confederate Icon Became An American Icon, Jennifer Page
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
After the Civil War, Charles Sumner said of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, "hand him over to the avenging pen of history." But has history been so been so avenging to Lee? In "The Forgotten Sins of Robert E. Lee: How a Confederate Icon Became an American Icon," this thesis argues that textbooks, public memory, and popular culture have collectively obscured the historical reality of Lee. In the years following the Civil War, the complex and tangled history of Lee as a slaveholding southerner were overlooked and, in many instances, erased in an effort to reunify North and South. In …
