The York County Multiethnic Heritage project, administered by Dr. Joyce Pettigrew Berman of Winthrop’s English faculty, was made possible by a $38,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of the U.S. government. The purpose of the project was to study the total contributions of ethnic groups to the total cultural heritage of York County School District No. 3, the York County Nature Museum and the city of Rock Hill Recreation Department. The project, which began in July 1976, and ended June 30, 1977, focused on ethnic groups in the area: Southern Appalachian, African-American and Native American. The …

The Johnson Family Papers consist of correspondence, diaries, journals, speeches, reports, newspaper clippings, financial records, photographs, and other records relating to the family of David Bancroft Johnson, founder and first president of Winthrop (1886-1928) including, his wife Mai Rutledge Smith Johnson (Class of 1898), and their children, David Bancroft, Jr., Burgh, and Suzanne Johnson. The collection covers topics concerning David Bancroft Johnson’s work with the Columbia, South Carolina school system and the origins of Winthrop. Correspondents include Edward Southey Joynes, J.C. McCurry, Frances W. Parker, A.D. Mayo, William G. Burgin, and W.R. Bradford among many others.

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) South Carolina Coalition Records consists of correspondence, newsletters, brochures, pamphlets, and telegrams, extending from 1972-1978, sent by both supporters and non-supporters of ERA to Coleman Poag, South Carolina state senator for district 6, in an effort to influence Poag’s vote. The ERA was a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal rights for women.

The Episcopal Churchwomen of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina Records consist of histories, minutes, reports, correspondence, financial records, program notes, photographs, newspaper clippings, journals, handbooks, yearbooks, and scrapbooks relating to the history of the Episcopal Church in the Upstate of South Carolina and women’s role in the Church. Of particular interest are the records relating to the Bishops Committee on Race Relations and the Bi-Racial Committee, which was concerned with a Voorhees College disturbance in which black power militants seized control of the college facilities in 1967.
