The 1996-97 season should be an interesting one for the Black Bears as they pursue a third consecutive conference championship and NCAA berth. In keeping with the UMaine tradition of academic excellence, the two previous teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament have combined for a 3.0 GPA or better. The Black Bears completed the best season in the program’s 21-year history with a 27-5 record last year. The team went undefeated, 18-0, in conference play, the second team to do so in NAC history.
UMaine returns three starters from last year’s squad including the leading scorer in the nation from …

Pilot Program Helping Schools Link Lessons Of Athletics And Academics, Kay Hyatt
General University of Maine Publications
Four Maine high schools are pilot sites for a new program designed to strengthen the relationship between athletics and academics and formally connect the contributions of sports to the educational improvement goals of each school. The foe us of the project is professional development of coaches to ensure that the lessons and experiences of athletics support the local school mission and the state's performance-based expectations for students.

In The Story World, Kids Really Want To Read New Book Maps Out The Journey, Kay Hyatt
In The Story World, Kids Really Want To Read New Book Maps Out The Journey, Kay Hyatt
General University of Maine Publications
It's not that kids can't read, but that they won't because they can't "see" or "live through" the story. That insight from the perspective of seventh and eight graders led a determined teacher to find out just what the act of reading really is and to let his students in on the secret. In You Gotta Be the Book, recently released by Teachers' College Press and the National Council of Teachers of English, Jeffrey Wilhelm, now a University of Maine professor, weaves the drama and characters of his teacher research into new theory and practice that is described as "groundbreaking." …

The Soul Of The Firm (Mechanicsburg, Pa), C. William Pollard
The Soul Of The Firm (Mechanicsburg, Pa), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
In this speech delivered at Messiah College (Mechanicsburg, PA), Pollard elucidates his theory concerning the "soul of the firm," which is most easily defined as the people who work for the organization. In light of this, he defines corporate leadership as essentially a form of service, a means by which the manager serves the greater good of the individuals who make up the larger organization.
