Reading The Room: Memory, Dwelling, And The Everyday, Sara R. Hardin
Reading The Room: Memory, Dwelling, And The Everyday, Sara R. Hardin
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In any space, there is a residue that coats the present with a patina of memory. Creating layered imagery in dream-like paintings and prints, I use the domestic realm as a metaphor for the internal world of the mind, memories, and private thoughts, including them in compositions with symbols like the boundaries of windows, doors, and gates. These metaphorical structures also portray outward identities, which guard inner emotions. The conceptual aspects of these compositional elements weave together memories of the past and places of the present into a unified whole.
I began graduate school at the beginning of the COVID-19 …
Blurring The Boundary: Reinvigorating Joy In The Mundane Through Juxtaposition, Taylor M. Fulton
Blurring The Boundary: Reinvigorating Joy In The Mundane Through Juxtaposition, Taylor M. Fulton
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
There is an inherent tension between interior and exterior as experienced by the human body. We live an overwhelming majority of our lives indoors, yet we are consistently compelled towards the natural world. This compulsion is necessitated by biophilia, driving a desire to be around lifelike processes.
The boundary between interior and exterior mandates that we live our lives on one side or the other at a time, never simultaneously existing both indoors and outdoors. A disparity between the spaces is therefore maintained by the boundary. This perpetual separation sets up for the perfect use of juxtaposition, which is utilized …
Words Are A Pipe, Kyle Michael Utter
Words Are A Pipe, Kyle Michael Utter
Theses and Dissertations
A painter retraces the steps he took in making one of his paintings from beginning to end. Rather than explicitly ascribing a series of concerns or goals to his studio practice in general, he recounts the material choices he made over an 8 month period of making a specific painting of an interior landscape. The essay begins with a consideration of the written word and its potential shortcomings in describing the creative process. Warned of writing’s pitfalls, the reader proceeds onto a meandering path of written introspection as the painter reflects on his art-historical references, his sources of imagery, his …

Collecting And Selecting, Masy Hebert
Collecting And Selecting, Masy Hebert
LSU Master's Theses
In Collecting and Selecting, I am exploring the way others adorn their lives and how these elements add up to emblematize the keeper of the treasures. With linoleum relief prints and drawings, I compose a unique type of portraiture that reveals the parallel identity between the way we dress ourselves and our living spaces. Within my process, I capture moments with photographs, draw, carve, print, and cut out the elements that hold a presence of the owner. Utilizing a heightened sense of contrast with black and white images, the textures and details of these objects come alive. Each gallery wall …
Interiors Imagined And Remembered, Andrew Brown
Interiors Imagined And Remembered, Andrew Brown
LSU Master's Theses
My paintings are about the concept of home and how this notion constantly evolves with each successive experience, changing how I perceive and experience interior spaces. The imagery in my work is limited to common forms such as cardboard boxes and shelving, as these are elements that are easily related to, and that speak to everyday experiences. Color, space and form are manipulated to work within and at times subvert the implied narrative of each painting. Although memory remains an active part of my process, imagination and the exploration of paint’s physical and expressive possibilities have risen to the fore. …
