Exploring Distortion And Clarity In The Modern Printed Portrait, Karina M. Harper Jan 2014

Exploring Distortion And Clarity In The Modern Printed Portrait, Karina M. Harper

Summer Research

My work has focused on two sides of the artistic process: inspiration and application. While studying abroad, I read, saw, and experienced modern France, living with a host family in Dijon. In the midst of this, I researched the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a French printmaker who utilized the lithographic process and pushed it forward as a modern and respected art practice. Lithography is a type of art involving changing the chemical nature of limestone to attract ink where an image is drawn with greasy pens. Returning to the Puget Sound campus and to one of the few lithograph …

Gelang: A Photography Of Belonging, Chase Clow Jan 2014

Gelang: A Photography Of Belonging, Chase Clow

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Gelang: A Photography of Belonging proposes a new category of landscape photography, one that moves away from emphasis upon imagery of particular kinds of landscape (such as wilderness, topographical, or wastelandscape) and also away from genres of photography (art, documentary, or scientific) and instead investigates the shared values and ethics among landscape and nature photographers and the kinds of awareness and knowledge that arise through outdoor, field-based photographic practice. An analysis of the writings of photographers and their published interviews, as well as the author's own photographic experiences in the field, reveals a common core of life-affirming values predicated on …

Locative Histories: Exploring The Continued Influence Of Early Locative Media Art, Conor Mcgarrigle Jan 2014

Locative Histories: Exploring The Continued Influence Of Early Locative Media Art, Conor Mcgarrigle

Articles

This paper, which draws on aspects of my doctoral research, traces the influence of early Locative Media Art on the current form and application of location-aware technologies. The mechanisms and impulse for this influence are introduced and analyzed and it is proposed that they point to new approaches in the consideration of the agency of Locative Media art.

I return to the origins of Locative Media at the Karosta workshop and the ambitions of early practitioners to argue that the practice was based on a prescient analysis of the potential for ubiquitous networked location-awareness. From this analysis was developed an …

Eco-Theatre, R. Murray Schafer, Eleanor James, Sarah Ann Standing Jan 2014

Eco-Theatre, R. Murray Schafer, Eleanor James, Sarah Ann Standing

Publications and Research

Born in Sarnia, Ontario, in 1933, and widely considered Canada’s leading living composer, Raymond Murray Schafer is also a librettist, educator, writer, and “soundscape” theorist. Schafer composes for symphonies as well as chamber orchestras, solo instruments (he has even composed a piece for snowmobile), and vocalists. His compositions have played throughout the world. Schafer’s operatic cycle Patria—a masterwork almost forty years in the making—consists of ten episodes, plus a prologue and an epilogue. The prologue The Princess of the Stars and epilogue And Wolf Shall Inherit the Moon (also known as the Wolf Project) comprise an eco-theatre where Schafer places …

Master Of The Universe: The Theatrical Director As Artist And Communicator, Audrey Thomas Jan 2014

Master Of The Universe: The Theatrical Director As Artist And Communicator, Audrey Thomas

Masters Theses

This qualitative study was undertaken to examine the processes by which theatrical directors determine the theme for a production and communicate their unifying artistic visions to the agents who, in turn, relay it to the audience. The research revealed that the director's message is formed through comprehensive study of the text, the artifact around which the system is formed, as well as information which provides context for the work of the playwright; consideration of the theatrical organization's missional objectives (the environment in which the system exists); and concerns of artistic leadership. Communication of the concept to stakeholders, and ultimately to …

Illustrated Tales Of Little Sister Fox: Stories About A Clever Fox From Russian Fairytales, Rachel W. Smoot Jan 2014

Illustrated Tales Of Little Sister Fox: Stories About A Clever Fox From Russian Fairytales, Rachel W. Smoot

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis examines the interaction of pictures and words in children’s storybooks. The illustrations placed alongside the text of the book are just as important to understanding the story as are the words. “Illustrated Tales of Little Sister Fox” combines elements of several traditional Russian folktales into a single story. Illustrations are hand sketched and digitally painted.
