Introduction To Logic, Harry Gensler, S.J.
Harry J. Gensler, S.J.
Introduction to Logic offers one of the most clear, interesting and accessible introductions to what has long been considered one of the most challenging subjects in philosophy. Harry Gensler engages students with the basics of logic through practical examples and important arguments both in the history of philosophy and from contemporary philosophy. Using simple and manageable methods for testing arguments, students are led step-by-step to master the complexities of logic.
"I'M Not A Racist, But...": The Moral Quandary Of Race, Lawrence Blum
"I'M Not A Racist, But...": The Moral Quandary Of Race, Lawrence Blum
Lawrence Blum
Not all racial incidents are racist incidents, Lawrence Blum says. "We need a more varied and nuanced moral vocabulary for talking about the arena of race. We should not be faced with a choice of 'racism' or nothing." Use of the word "racism" is pervasive: An article about the NAACP's criticism of television networks for casting too few "minority" actors in lead roles asks, "Is television a racist institution?" A white girl in Virginia says it is racist for her African-American teacher to wear African attire.Blum argues that a growing tendency to castigate as "racism" everything that goes wrong in …
Supererogatory Superluminality, Bradley Monton, Brian Kierland
Supererogatory Superluminality, Bradley Monton, Brian Kierland
Brian Kierland
We argue that any superluminal theory T is empirically equivalent to a nonsuperluminal theory T∗, with the following constraints on T∗: T∗ preserves the spacetime intervals between events as entailed by T , T∗ is naturalistic (as long as T is), and all the events which have causes according to T also have causes according to T∗. Tim Maudlin (1996) defines standard interpretations of quantum mechanics as interpretations ‘according to which there was a unique set of outcomes in Aspect’s laboratory, which outcomes occurred at spacelike separation’, and Maudlin claims that standard …

Formal Ethics, Harry Gensler, S.J.
Harry J. Gensler, S.J.
Formal Ethics is the study of formal ethical principles. The most important of these, perhaps even the most important principle of life, is the golden rule: "Treat others as you want to be treated". Although the golden rule enjoys support amongst different cultures and religions in the world, philosophers tend to neglect it. Formal Ethics gives the rule the attention it deserves.
Moral Perception And Particularity, Lawrence Blum
Moral Perception And Particularity, Lawrence Blum
Lawrence Blum
Most contemporary moral philosophy is concerned with issues of rationality, universality, impartiality, and principle. By contrast Lawrence Blum is concerned with the psychology of moral agency. The essays in this collection examine the moral import of emotion, motivation, judgment, perception, and group identifications, and explore how all these psychic capacities contribute to a morally good life.

The Golden Rule Argument Against Abortion, Harry Gensler, S.J.
Harry J. Gensler, S.J.
This anthology examines 11 key issues dealing with the beginning and end of life, and presents a balanced set of 67 classic and contemporary readings on each of them.
