At Risk In The Writing Classroom: Negotiating A Lesbian Teacher Identity, Irene G. Meaker May 1999

At Risk In The Writing Classroom: Negotiating A Lesbian Teacher Identity, Irene G. Meaker

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

"Education is a fearful enterprise," says teacher and philosopher, Parker Palmer. Student-centered/ processoriented pedagogy asks teachers to step out from behind the relative safety of the teacher mask and to enter the risky arena of learning. For the writing teacher, a special challenge is to help students negotiate the risks inherent in the act of writing and in sharing writing with the "Other."

To prevent fears from dominating our students, teachers must model risk-taking and risk negotiation. In my own teaching, my fears around students' reactions to learning my sexual identity meant that I more often reinforced fears than dispelled …

From Literal Path To Transcendent Journey: The Pilgrim's Movement Throughout Inferno, Shelley Manning '99 Apr 1999

From Literal Path To Transcendent Journey: The Pilgrim's Movement Throughout Inferno, Shelley Manning '99

Honors Projects

In his "Letter to Can Grande," Dante attributes the concept of polysemy, which means "many levels," to his poem. l In the letter, Dante states: "For the clarification of what I am going to say, then, it should be understood that there is not just a single sense in this work: it might rather be called polysemous, that is having several senses" ("Letter" 99). This concept not only applies to the mUlti-layered construction of the Divine Comedy but also to its interpretation. Although most critics rely upon the "Letter," I find his defense of hierarchical interpretation in the "Four Levels …

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi Apr 1999

Orality In Writing: Its Cultural And Political Function In Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, And African-Canadian Poetry, Yaw Adu-Gyamfi

Faculty Dissertations

For years, critics have used Black writers' interweaving of African-derived oral textual features and European written forms to reject the concept of the Great Divide between orality and writing in literacy studies. These critics primarily see the hybridized texts of writers of African descent as a model that assists in the complex union of writing and orality. My argument is that the integrationist model is not the only way, perhaps not even the most fruitful way, to read the hybridized texts of writers of African descent. I develop a reading of Anglophone African, African-Caribbean, and African-Canadian literature that sees the …

Obstacle Or Opportunity: Journeys In The Odyssey, Heather Kaschmitter Apr 1999

Obstacle Or Opportunity: Journeys In The Odyssey, Heather Kaschmitter

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The final leg of Odysseus’journey home occurs nearly halfway through the poem, serving as a transitional point. Odysseus, having related his adventures to the Phaeacians, can move on from them. It is Athena who guided Odysseus, still trembling from all he has experienced, to the palace of King Alcinods in Scheria. The goddess knew that the healing process would begin there.

In writing of the sadness, rage, and tears that Odysseus displays at a banquet given for him by Alcinoos, Homer makes some of the initial "observations as to the effects of combat on men,” (Schwartz, 26) which we might …

Family Names, Gayle Greene Apr 1999

Family Names, Gayle Greene

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

I was ten when my mother changed our name from Greenberg to Greene. I had no idea why she did this, nor, presumably, did she. It had to do with the breakup of her marriage, that was clear-she no longer wanted his name. But why, I asked later, when I was old enough to wonder about such things, didn't she go back to her maiden name?

It's Not Easy Being Green: Gender And Friendship In Eliza Haywood's Political Periodicals, Rachel Carnell Mar 1999

It's Not Easy Being Green: Gender And Friendship In Eliza Haywood's Political Periodicals, Rachel Carnell

English Faculty Publications

British writer Eliza Haywood's two periodicals, 'The Female Spectator' (1744-46) and 'The Parrot' (1746), protested against the gendered split between political and domestic literary genres, showing that British novels and periodicals written by or addressed to women did engage in political discourse. Through her periodicals, Haywood presented a model for female-female friendship that portrayed women engaging in rational and polite political debate. Furthermore, she argued that this same debate could occur between a woman and a man apart from an apolitical, romantic relationship. Finally, she gave opportunity for friendship to be expressed between those who had been excluded from the …

Regional Aspects Of Miami Crime Fiction, Heidi Lee Alvarez Feb 1999

Regional Aspects Of Miami Crime Fiction, Heidi Lee Alvarez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that forces of literary regionalism and postmodern culture are behind the explosion of crime fiction being written in and about South Florida by a growing number of resident authors.

Research included four methods of investigation: 1. A critical reading of many of the novels that make up the sub-genre. 2. A study of the theories of regionalism, postmodernism and the genre of the crime fiction. 3. Interviews with a number of the authors and a prominent Miami book seller. 4. Sociological studies of Miami in terms of historical events and their cultural significance.

Today's South Florida crime …
