African American Faculty: A Study Of Their Experiences Related To Intercultural Competence At Predominantly White Institutions, Hervey A. Taylor Iii

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Underrepresentation of faculty of color in higher education is a phenomenon that has been studied and well documented by researchers for many years (e.g., Aguirre, 2000; Aguirre, Martinez, & Hernandez, 1993; Bair, Bair, Mader, Hipp, & Hakim, 2010; Chai et al., 2009; Collins, 1990; Turner & Myers, 2000). This issue is even more evident as it relates to the underrepresentation of African American faculty at predominantly White institutions (PWIs). Many studies have addressed the underrepresentation of African American faculty at PWIs (e.g., Alexander & Moore, 2008; Bower, 2002; Brown & Dancy, 2010; Cleveland, 2004).

According to the United States Department …

Professional Success For Music Majors : Understanding The Experiences Of Those Who Have Achieved, Jonathan Lucas Hess

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

his case study seeks to understand how the college experiences of successful professional musicians can be mapped onto their eventual professional success. Three highly accomplished professional musicians were interviewed about their college experience and musical careers. It was found that participants were highly motivated and had college experiences including collaborative learning, experiential learning, and needs-focused instruction. These conditions all resemble a student-centered learning experience that might be used as a model for effective pedagogical practice. Implications for practice and recommendations for future research are offered.

Twentieth Century Economics Of Child-Rearing In Japan, Michele Gibney May 2005

Twentieth Century Economics Of Child-Rearing In Japan, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

In order to explain the falling Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in Japan, it is necessary to look at the social factors affecting women and raising children in Japan. By examining historical factors surrounding women in Japan—their education, their presence in the workforce, and the cultural stigmas attached to their stereotypical representation—I will attempt to describe the deteriorating TFR in Japan as an economic problem with political and social repercussions. In conclusion I will also try to provide a prognosis and a recommendation for a solution.

More than a decade has passed since the United States Supreme Court made its historic decision in Lau v. Nichols on January 21, 1974. Ruling in favor of the non-English-speaking Chinese plaintiffs, the Court upheld earlier guidelines established by the office for Civil Rights for school districts with more than five percent national origin-minority group children. In delivering the Court's opinion, Justice Douglas reiterated these words of J. Stanley Pottinger, former director of OCR:

The Effects Of Voluntary Aerobic Exercise And Exercise Incentives On Aerobic Capacity And Blood Lipid Levels In College Age Men And Women, Tamara Jean Shanholtzer Jan 1984

The Effects Of Voluntary Aerobic Exercise And Exercise Incentives On Aerobic Capacity And Blood Lipid Levels In College Age Men And Women, Tamara Jean Shanholtzer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Most authorities on exercise agree that regular vigorous endurance type activity results in aerobic fitness (7, 10, 17, 36, 37). Rhythmic repetitive and dynamic activities using large muscle groups would include such aerobic exercise as Jogging, walking, swimming, cycling, tennis, basketball, racquetball, and soccer (1, 7, 10, 17). In addition, cardiovascular fitness has been suggested to be postively linked with a reduction in the incidence of coronary heart disease (1, 11, 36, 38, 53). Sometimes, problems that lead to adult illnesses are the result of lifestyles that deploy early in childhood (11). Health education procedures have been used to provide …

Every child has the right to full and free opportunity to explore and develop his capacities in the field of music in such ways as may bring him happiness and a sense of well-being.

It is impossible to deal with all aspects of elementary music education in a single presentation; consequently, this thesis is directed toward a specific need in a particular school district, namely the Vallecito Union School District. …

The Need For English For Academic Purposes : An Analysis Of Prenominal Modification In Economics, Pat Kamalani Cafferty

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper shows the complexity of noun phrases within an academic text and suggests, therefore, the complexity of the reading process that the traditional approach may not cover adequately. In this thesis, we will look at the complexity of the reading and comprehension processes through an analysis of prenominal modification found in Chapter 25 (a chapter chosen at random) of Paul Samuelson’s Economics. Samuelson’s Economics is a basic text chosen for this analysis because of its introductory level vocabulary and concepts and its wide use by students in the areas of Economics, Business, and the like. Although abundant studies have …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is thus the purpose of this study to explore the educational aspirations of a group of high school students whose ethnic background is Chinese with the intention of filling the gap in sociological research that has overlooked the Chinese community. As there are many opposing theories on the subject of aspiration, this case study of Chinese students seeks to clarify some of the theoretical perspectives and their problems. Moreover, any study of a minority group would inevitably expose some of the problems that the group faces. Once the nature of the problems is identified and understood, hopefully, solutions may …

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Given this large involvement that children have with motion pictures, an educator is moved to inquire into the possible effects that movies might have upon them. It, therefore, seems appropriate that an educational dissertation be undertaken concentrating on Disney Production films, since as indicated by the foregoing, they are so universally viewed by American children.

Statement of the problem:

This study attempted to (1) analyze the five screenplays listed on page 6, (2) show two Disney films based on the screenplays analyzed to groups of children and administer a questionnaire to them. The investigator used the obtained data to determine …

A Survey Of Creative Dramatics, Julie Devecchio Baker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The little princess was merrily playing in the garden with her ball; tossing it up into the air and bounding it down on the ground. As she played she danced around, humming and singing little snatches of tunes to herself. She was completely unaware of the evil-looking creature creeping up behind her. Suddenly, the evil witch stretched out her arms and, with fingers pointing at the little princess she loosed an evil-sounding yell. The little princess looked up first in amazement and then in horror. Then, she yawned sleepily and fell back on the ground fast asleep. The witch then …

John Donne : English Master Of Gongorism, Dorothy Gayle Hightower

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The title of this thesis, JOHN DONNE: ENGLISH MASTER OF GONGORISM, may seem perplexing to some, presumptuous to others. However, the purpose of this thesis will be to present evidence, through a textual study of the poetic style of both John Donne (1572-1631) and Don Luis de Göngora (1561-1627), which will verify the assumption that Donne was poetically influenced by Góngora.

Laboratorio De Lectura Para La Universidad De Antioquia : Proyecto Interamericano : Presentado Al Profesorado ..., Miguel Peñaloza Rodriguez

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
