Wave Of Arrival, Cathleen Bonner
Wave Of Arrival, Cathleen Bonner
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis uses poetry to explore the influences of space and geographical location on subjective perception and vision. More specifically, it aims to use landscape to observe the visible and invisible qualities of a geographical space, and investigate the ways in which perception of those spatial boundaries can be used to create self-portraits. It also aims to revise traditional, romanticized versions of the American West as manifested in poetry and photography in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. To do so, it focuses its attention on the man-altered landscape, rather than the pure, wild landscape as a space barricaded …
All The Blood In Love, Maya Marshall
All The Blood In Love, Maya Marshall
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis uses poetry to explore my history and those of my matriarchs now that I find myself at the end of the line. The writing of this manuscript entailed interviewing my parents and their parents; researching Augusta, Ga and Brooklyn, NY have been particularly helpful in reconstructing the worlds my matriarchs inhabited from the 1940s to present. The work includes various characters—some amalgams representing my mother and grandmother—others, perhaps less realized currently, employ archetypes in an effort to turn their referents to unveil some truths about what it is to be an American. They include American Girl, Abiku (in …
Milkfish, Emylisa Warrick
Milkfish, Emylisa Warrick
Theses and Dissertations
Milkfish is a collection of poems that explores familial and generational trauma in a Filipino-American family. Primarily written in first person narrative, it gives voice to a Filipina-American who has experienced controlling behavior, verbal abuse, silencing, and colorist attitudes and behaviors from her father and mother. The collection seeks to understand why the speaker’s parents raised her this way by investigating how the parents were raised in the Philippines. These poems were constructed with the help of interviews between the author and her parents. Additionally, it explores the patriarchal structure of Filipino families and shines a light on “women’s work,” …

A Social Study Of Discworld Autonomy, Morgan Rogers
A Social Study Of Discworld Autonomy, Morgan Rogers
Senior Theses
From 1983 to 2015, Sir Terry Pratchett wrote a series of forty-one novels, several short stories, and companion works set on the Discworld. The Discworld is a flat world that rides through space on the backs of four giant elephants that stand themselves on the back of the Great A’tuin, a world turtle. The Disc is based around the Hub, or central point, and the Rim, or the circumference of the world. There is a waterfall all around the Rim of the world that falls into space itself. The Hub compares to the Earth’s poles in that it is the …
Limited By Body Habitus: An American Fat Story, Jennifer Renee Blevins
Limited By Body Habitus: An American Fat Story, Jennifer Renee Blevins
Theses and Dissertations
On March 24, 2010, my father walked into a hospital in North Carolina for an elective gastric bypass procedure; by Easter Sunday, it had become uncertain whether he would ever walk back out. Part memoir, part cultural analysis, Limited By Body Habitus: An American Fat Story traces the catastrophic consequences of my father’s botched gastric bypass surgery and examines the pervasive fat prejudice in the United States. As I tell the story of caring for my critically ill father while trying to navigate my complicated relationship with my mother, I wrestle with my own history of fat hatred. Additionally, I …
Well Enough Alone: Stories, Sarah Jane Huskey
Well Enough Alone: Stories, Sarah Jane Huskey
Theses and Dissertations
This collection of short stories aims to capture the difficulties of telling anything at all, let alone the truth, the whole story, or the abstract reality. Though its thematic concerns might seem a bit cheerless at first blush, Well Enough Alone aims to treat them as prominent features of day-to-day life rather than gloomy afflictions or the loci of trauma.
Elsewhere, Then, Tracie Renée Dawson
Elsewhere, Then, Tracie Renée Dawson
Theses and Dissertations
Elsewhere, Then is a cross-generational road novel that traces the sociopolitical and personal narrative of a family through a musician making her way from Savannah to San Francisco. Traditional road narratives have long depicted the lone female traveller as being subject to violence when stepping outside the domestic sphere, which echoes history's larger and pervasive trend of denying women agency through silence and subjugation—in life, as in stories. The novel interrogates how (and by whom) narratives are created, embellished, changed, and/or discarded through the narrator's temporal and spatial journey. A guiding force behind the novel is William H. Whyte's idea …
How To Make A Mudsparkler, Ethan Fogus
How To Make A Mudsparkler, Ethan Fogus
Theses and Dissertations
How to Make a Mudsparkler is a collection of lyrical narratives that address issues of masculinity and identity. These poems are threaded through with repeated themes— religion, place, and the nature of work—as they interrogate familial lineage with inventories of memory. The first section ruminates on family history as it is linked to formative memories. Section two continues these themes, but adds an exploration of adolescence and isolation. Finally, section three is the most immediate section as the speaker explores the fundamental questions of love, loss, and the nature of friendship.

It follows two women throughout two distinct timelines (1940s and 1980s) in the region of Galicia, northwest of Spain. The narrative also examines the relationship between social and institutional power, as well as the ways in which folklore can shed light on timeless topics such as gender relations and a community’s interactions with the supernatural.

Theses and Dissertations
This historical non-fiction novel aims to relate the events concerning the settlement of Floreana Island in the Galápagos Archipelago in the early 1930's by European ex-pats. The events related are entirely based in fact, informed by the accounts of a variety of different sources with personal knowledge to the events. The style of the piece is influenced by the storytelling techniques of the fiction novel, with the narrative being primarily presented in the limited third person perspective of Dore Strauch, the protagonist of the story. The objective of Outlandish is to communicate a factual account of the human violence (carried …
Strike-Slip, Amanda Mitchell
Strike-Slip, Amanda Mitchell
Theses and Dissertations
strike-slip is a work of poetry in which a female speaker seeks answers for a violent past she is just beginning to unravel. By revisiting and reconsidering scenes from girlhood, including the broken objects and split bodies she encountered in the Appalachian wilderness she grew up in and around, she attempts to gain insight into a present state of selfhood that continues to elude her. The poems here come together to conduct an excavation—each memory is an old bone from which the speaker must carefully brush the dust away until she can figure out something about the larger thing it …

Dirt, Rebecca Landau
Dirt, Rebecca Landau
Theses and Dissertations
Dirt weaves together different narratives concerned with the disruption of rules governing the physical body: a new set of creation myths. This collection gives voice to a spectrum of bodily experiences and processes of transformation, evoking questions of conformity, confrontation, and self-determination. By centering stories around differing body politics and the cultural narratives inscribed upon our bodies with and without our consent, Dirt invests both content and form in important questions of self-creation and voice. Yet by defamiliarizing the bodily experience and refusing to provide or articulate answers, Dirt exposes the unstable nature of this bodily, synesthetic experience and our …

Maybe Mermaids And Robots Are Lonely: 40 Stories And A Novella, Matthew Fogarty
Theses and Dissertations
Maybe Mermaids and Robots are Lonely comprises 40 stories and a novella all set in or around Detroit and featuring figures that have become almost legendary in American culture. Stories in the collection range in form from a more traditional, if quirky, realism to a somewhat more ethereal or slipstream or magical realism. Counterfeiters, Brandon Rushton
Counterfeiters, Brandon Rushton
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an examination of region. More specifically, it is about the physical and psychological landscapes these characters find themselves having to exist in. This book examines the liminality of the local; this is very much about thresholds. Rather than examining what exists beyond the threshold, this book considers the forces that drive us to one. This is a book about regional stasis and how, in some instances, stasis can transform itself into suppression. The enclosed environment of community can create this suppression, this contractive or almost gravitational hold the place has on the people who inhabit it. This …
The Lonely Empire, Andrew Valencia
The Lonely Empire, Andrew Valencia
Theses and Dissertations
This creative manuscript contains ten original short stories dealing with themes of alienation, imperialism, and cultural intersectionality. Though they are all influenced, in one way or another, by ideas of cultural and sociopolitical relevance, they are to be read and viewed primarily as stories, i.e., as self-contained exercises in character, plot, and language that can be appreciated for their artistic merits as well as their academic contributions. The diverse settings of the stories, ranging from Ancient Greece to Central California and from Asia to Latin America, are a reflection of the author‘s own diverse cultural experiences. In one story, a …
