The Militarization Of Prayer In America: White And Native American Spiritual Warfare, Elizabeth Mcalister
The Militarization Of Prayer In America: White And Native American Spiritual Warfare, Elizabeth Mcalister
Elizabeth McAlister
This article examines how militarism has come to be one of the generative forces of the prayer practices of millions of Christians across the globe. To understand this process, I focus on the articulation between militarization and aggressive forms of prayer, especially the evangelical warfare prayer developed by North Americans since the 1980s. Against the backdrop of the rise in military spending and neoliberal economic policies, spiritual warfare evangelicals have taken on the project of defending the United States on the “spiritual” plane. They have elaborated a complex theology and prayer practice with a highly militarized discourse and set of …
From Theology To Praxis: The Quest For The Full Inclusion Of Women In Churches Of Christ, Jennifer H. Christy
From Theology To Praxis: The Quest For The Full Inclusion Of Women In Churches Of Christ, Jennifer H. Christy
Jennifer H Christy
From the earliest days of the movement’s history, Churches of Christ have been shaped by a literalist reading of the Bible that has privileged certain texts over others in the conversation surrounding the role of women in the life of the church. Patriarchal systems of thought and practice have dominated the conversation. Support from a few key texts has been used to establish the belief that women are created in subordination and submission to men, often resulting in the status of women being regarded as inferior and unequal to men. This manifests in a polity where women are limited, or …

Pastoral Care: From Past To Present, Ann Marie Kerlin
Ann Marie Kerlin
According to the U.S. National Conference on Mental Health, “Nationally, an estimated 45 million Americans suffer from illnesses like depression, schizophrenia or post-traumatic stress syndrome.” In a speech at this conference, President Obama stated that one out of five Americans experience mental illness in any year. A study published in 2013 surveyed prescription drug use and found that the second most common prescribed drugs were anti-depressants. Obviously there is a great demand for counseling and psychological care in the United States, and both secular and religious approaches to care are available. The purpose of this article is to review briefly …

Strengthened By Fire: How Events In C.S. Lewis’S Life Shaped His Views On Pain And Suffering, Gary E. Silvers Ph.D.
Gary E. Silvers Ph.D.
The issue of pain and suffering has long been a barrier to some when considering the existence of a loving God. C.S. Lewis was not immune to this dilemma. As a self-described atheist, Lewis concluded, “Either there is no spirit behind the universe, or else a spirit indifferent to good and evil, or else an evil spirit.” The purpose of this paper is to explore how Lewis’s experiences of dealing with pain and suffering impacted his faith in God. The paper will show how his suffering and loss actually strengthened his faith.

Stasis In Moltmann E Schmitt, Pier Giuseppe Monateri
Stasis In Moltmann E Schmitt, Pier Giuseppe Monateri
Pier Giuseppe Monateri
The essay introduces an original interpretation of Moltmann’s thought on Christian kenosis, according to the fundamental critical method known as ‘close reading’. On this ground, the Author brings to the surface the complex bulk of literary quotations which give substance to a specific passage in Moltmann’s work “The Crucified God”. Quotations become an intellectual device apt to produce meaning through its proper deferral and suspension. Within this framework, the Author’s main purpose is to put at the centre of the scene the explicit reference made by Moltmann to C. Schmitt’s concept of stasis, in order to explain the self-emptying of …

Visual Culture Of Baptism In The Middle Ages: Essays On Medieval Fonts, Settings And Beliefs, Harriet Sonne De Torrens, Miguel Torrens
Harriet M Sonne de Torrens Dr.
Under the guidance of the leading experts on baptismal fonts and the co-directors of the Baptisteria Sacra Index, the world’s only iconographical inventory of baptismal fonts, a research project at the University of Toronto, this collection of essays by a group of European and North American scholars extends the traditional boundaries associated with the study of baptismal fonts. The ‘visual’ is privileged, whether it is in the metaphysical, literary or empirical realms of scholarship, offering a rich understanding of the powerful role of baptism played in medieval and renaissance society. In the quest for a holistic understanding of the vessels, …
Reconsidering The Date Of The Baptismal Font In San Isidoro, Leon, Spain, Harriet M. Sonne De Torrens Dr.
Reconsidering The Date Of The Baptismal Font In San Isidoro, Leon, Spain, Harriet M. Sonne De Torrens Dr.
Harriet M Sonne de Torrens Dr.
The baptismal font that stands today in the Cahpel of the Salazares n the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro of Seville in Leon, Spain has been assigned an early eleventh century date, ca. 1000-1050, making it the earliest of all known extant fonts, in both Spain and in the Latin West, that are ornamented with scenes from the life of Christ. This essay reviews the scholarship and proposes a 12th century date based on comparative examples in both Spain and the larger context of the Latin West.
Active Religion: James Ireland, The Separate Baptists, And The Great Awakening In Virginia, 1760-1775, Cooper Pasque
Active Religion: James Ireland, The Separate Baptists, And The Great Awakening In Virginia, 1760-1775, Cooper Pasque
Cooper Pasque
In the mid-eighteenth century, the religious fervor of the Great Awakening entered Virginia. Evangelical Baptists soon threatened to undermine the authority of the Anglican Church and its planter patrons. Despite their efforts to quiet the Baptists, evangelical religion took root in Virginia by the end of the American Revolution. Historical works on these events offer valid but incomplete explanations. Puzzling dynamics in the Virginian context require a more complex interpretation. The life of James Ireland provides a unique window into possible answers. His autobiography provides evidence for what appears to be the most fundamental reason for evangelicalism's successes in Virginia. …

Differences Between The Water Baptism And The Moment Of Receiving The Holy Spirit, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor
Differences Between The Water Baptism And The Moment Of Receiving The Holy Spirit, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor
Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor
From the New Testamental’s point of view, there are some differences between the time of the water baptism and the time of receiving the Holy Spirit. Even if chronologically the two acts can be very close, we can always make a clear temporal distinction between them. Using the most relevant passages from Acts, this article intends to prove that in all cases the baptism with the Holy Spirit was a distinct experience from the water baptism. The article also describes tangentially the receiving of the Holy Spirit.
