An Aging Church In An Aging Society: Averting A Possible Grim Future For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Russia, Yuri N. Drumi Jan 2017

An Aging Church In An Aging Society: Averting A Possible Grim Future For The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In Russia, Yuri N. Drumi

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

"Being an international and highly diverse community of believers, the world-wide Seventh-day Adventists Church has always struggled with maintaining its identity in a fast-changing world. This is natural, and much credit is to be given to several generations of church leaders for success in this regard. Nevertheless, after the seeds of Adventism have been liberally sown all over the world and as the seeds have grown, it is time to let those plants share more responsibility for their own future. Paternalism and top-down strategizing is no longer adequate to facilitate the spiritual rejuvenation of local forms of Adventism. To experience …

This study aims to establish a theology of missional leadership through motifs inherent in the cosmic conflict between God and Satan in the Book of Revelation, examining the Apocalypse and comparing it with relevant leadership theories. The Book of Revelation is a valid source of understanding pastoral and missional leadership because it contains leadership terminologies and concepts and reveals the Lamb’s leadership behavior and exposes the counterfeit leadership of the Dragon.

Seventh-Day Adventism, Doctrinal Statements, And Unity, Michael W. Campbell

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

Vision And Mission–Part 2: Christ, Spirituality, And The Emerging Remnant Church, Fernando L. Canale Jan 2016

Vision And Mission–Part 2: Christ, Spirituality, And The Emerging Remnant Church, Fernando L. Canale

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"In this article we continue our journey exploring the direct connection that exists between vision and everyday life by (1) considering what it means to live out the vision spiritually and the difference its various interpretations have on the spiritual and missionary life of the church. After (2) exploring the oft-forgotten vision-spirituality-church-mission connection operating within the church, we will (3) survey the way in which it relates to the neutralization of Scripture. Finally, we will (4) seek ways to maximize the church’s rich human resources to overcome the neutralization of Scripture and unleash the power of God’s Word on a …

Desmond Ford And The Righteousness By Faith Controversy, Gerhard Pfandl Jan 2016

Desmond Ford And The Righteousness By Faith Controversy, Gerhard Pfandl

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"Desmond Ford’s emphasis on Righteousness by Faith, as taught by Paul in the book of Romans, was a necessary course correction to the prevailing perfectionism in the 1960s, particularly in Australia, but not only there. Associated with it was an almost total lack of assurance of salvation among church members. Ford, like E. J. Waggoner in 1888, attempted to show that acceptance by God is on the basis of what Jesus has done, not on the basis of how good we are. Paul says, “He hath made Christ to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness …

Isaiah’S Messiah: Adventist Identity For The Last Days, Stephane Beaulieu Jan 2016

Isaiah’S Messiah: Adventist Identity For The Last Days, Stephane Beaulieu

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

This article proposes that Isaiah’s Messiah is the essence of Adventism and is what Adventists must proclaim in the eschaton. Portraits of the Messiah and His work for the people of God permeate the book of Isaiah. And while Isaiah’s Messiah was relevant for the people of the seventh century, the Messiah is portrayed as the One who will deliver and save His people now as well as then. In fact, Isaiah places his message of the Messiah in the realm of the last days.

Adventist Theological-Missiology: Contextualization In Mission And Ministry, Wagner Kuhn Jan 2016

Adventist Theological-Missiology: Contextualization In Mission And Ministry, Wagner Kuhn

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"...the purpose of theology and mission is to demonstrate in word and deed, in theory and in practice, the everlasting gospel (Rev. 14). It is to aim at the cross of Calvary, declaring and presenting with power and effectiveness the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (Jn.1:29). Paul demonstrates this theology and this mission by getting as close as possible to people in order to save them for Christ. He says: “I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some” (1 Cor. 9:22). This is the …

Ellen G. White’S Life Of Christ: An Episode In The History Of Early Adventist Translation Work, Denis Kaiser

Denis Kaiser

In the late 1880s and early 1890s a book on the life of Jesus Christ was published in various foreign languages in Europe and North America. Ellen G. White was given as the author of the book. It generally went under the English working title The Life of Christ although there never has been a published English counterpart to these foreign language editions. The circumstance of those editions raises the question of their textual basis, background, and significance. The present article shows that the Life of Christ is an adapted version of Spirit of Prophecy, vols. 2 and 3, …

Can Joy And Reverence Coexist? A Look At Worship And Culture, Lilianne Douhkan Sep 2003

Can Joy And Reverence Coexist? A Look At Worship And Culture, Lilianne Douhkan

Faculty Publications

"What is the right form of worship? Is there only one correct form or style of worship? Have worship forms changed over time? Who is to decide which form or format is appropriate for worship? Almost everyone involved in the organization of worship has been confronted with such questions.

"Within the ensuing discussions there is an abundance of good intent, but also a plethora of personal opinions, and very often little understanding of what worship really is. I would like to suggest that when we inquire about forms and formats of worship, we are asking the wrong questions. Rather than …
