Francis of Assisi Nguyen von Tri, was born in Shanghai, China in 1938. When the Communists took over China, his family left the country for Hanoi, North Vietnam. In 1954, when the French were defeated, they fled the Communists again, and settled in South Vietnam. He was raised a Catholic, and enrolled in the Christian Brothers order at a young age. While completing his formation for the Christian Brotherhood, Brother Francis began teaching students at various age levels. Language is like the cane in the hand of the blind person. The better one becomes at getting around with the cane, the more he or she is apt to forget the cane but through the cane perceive the objects scraped and tapped by the other end. A defective cane may distort the world perceived by the blind person. So too, defective use of language threatens to muddy our understanding of the things we talk about. When discussing something as difficult as natural evils, a frequently undetected defect in our language use is “overly attenuated description.” In this piece, I …
Examining Nostra Aetate After 40 Years: Catholic-Jewish Relations In Our Time, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed.
Examining Nostra Aetate After 40 Years: Catholic-Jewish Relations In Our Time, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed.
Sacred Heart University Press Books
On October 28, 1965, the Catholic bishops of the world voted to approve the shortest and perhaps most controversial document of Vatican II, Nostra Aetate, which addresses the relationship of the Catholic Church to non-Christians. Significantly, it signaled to the Jewish people and to the world that the Catholic Church was rethinking its attitudes, teachings and practices regarding Jews.
More than 40 years later, editor Anthony J. Cernera, Ph.D., former president of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, presents a volume of essays describing the past, present and future of the Nostra Aetate story. It calls attention to the …
The Aesthetic Hermeneutics Of Hans-Georg Gadamer And Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Jason Paul Bourgeois
The Aesthetic Hermeneutics Of Hans-Georg Gadamer And Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Jason Paul Bourgeois
Marian Library Faculty Publications
This book compares two figures that are not often associated together within the field of Roman Catholic theology, namely Hans-Georg Gadamer and Hans Urs von Balthasar. This work attempts to find deep structural affinities in the aesthetics and hermeneutics of both thinkers, as expressed through shared metaphysical and anthropological assumptions about the dialogical nature of truth and interpretation. The body of the work will be devoted to analyzing these assumptions of Gadamer and Balthasar, both individually and in comparison with each other. However, this preface is necessary to place the concerns of this book into a broader theological context.
