Storytelling Through Comics: An Animated Reflection, Skylar Kaster

For my Honors Senior Capstone Project, I am exploring the methods of 1970s -1990s newspaper comics, focusing specifically on the comics “Calvin and Hobbes”, “The Far Side”, “Garfield”, and “Cathy”. I present and engage with these comic artists’ opinions, methods, and experiences. Additionally, I delve into my personal experience and motivation behind comics. My final product culminating these findings is a 2D Whiteboard Stop Motion animation approximately 8 minutes long, accompanied by a voiceover and script.

The impulse to make work from the residue of real life has been called many things throughout art history. In my thesis, I use some of these methods to discuss generative modes of creating work. I talk about Lucy Lippard’s proposal for a “way of making,” Disidentification, Camp, Appropriation, Termite Art, and Hito Steyerl’s call to create art that addresses the present in imaginative ways. Each process relies on a commitment to being in the world and building something on its uneven ground.

Justice Henderson is a senior at the University of Aranksas recieving a BFA in painting, a BA in journalism and a minor in art history. Engaging with the abstraction of perception, Henderson uses painting and drawing techniques to investigate the concept of ephemerality and reconfigures shapes and colors to create a visual experience based on the illusion of three-dimensional space. Henderson lives on her homewtown of Morrilton, AR, where she continues to create paintings, drawings and installations.

The artist discusses her Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition Holler, held at Tipton Gallery March 2^ndto March 13^th, 2020. The exhibition features an installation of works on fiber, paper, and found objects tied to her upbringing in Southern Appalachia. A variety of collected materials including bedsheets, chalkboards, and barbwire are taken out of their traditional contexts and brought into a new vantage point through the artist’s alterations.

This paper explores Nicola Stephanie’s works in painted and shaped canvas, which investigate sensation and visual awareness of motion. Inspired partly by clothing forms, her vocabulary of color, shape and surface articulates a sense of the body and its boundaries. These spatial drawings evoke perceptions of gravity, rotation and orientation.

This independent project was created for the yearlong Anatomy component class in Dance. The author utilized movement practice, viewing video recordings, anatomical study and analysis, sketching and drawing, to develop and produce a detailed visual representation of Spirals, choreographed by Irene Dowd © 1991.

Spirals is a complex and comprehensive warm up and cool down choreographic sequence for dancers, built upon functional anatomy and neuromuscular training principles. Summer Research

This body of art attempts to bridge two subjects, visual art and neuroscience. It does so by illustrating five topics in neuroaesthetics, the study of how we see and perceive art. I believe beautiful things can happen at the intersections of interdisciplinary subjects and wanted to explore this one further.

The first piece begins with a straightforward introduction to the structure of the human eye. The drawings following increase in complexity, working further up the visual process. For instance, the second depicts intermediate pathways in the brain using Op art techniques. The third illustrates how memory influences how we see …
