"Making the most out of whatever Life gives you".

For decades I have been making art out of things that other people have abandoned, discarded, sent to thrift stores or sold in garage sales. Since my youth I have possessed the ability to find value, usefulness and even see beauty in objects that most others would label as trash.

I’m interested in how, as social creatures, we see and present ourselves to others. My recent work explores image and identity, how they form, and how we tailor them to meet social standards and expectations. I look at the inaccuracies that arise from seeing ourselves through the lens of other people, and the consequential manipulated presentation of the self to these very same people - “The Looking-Glass-Self”.

This exhibition and catalog have had the close cooperation of the artist, Jim Starrett, to whom must go the first thanks. His professional experience and dedication as an artist and teacher has helped shape this exhibition. Brian Mains' design of the catalog and his essay contribute valuable perspectives for our audience. Starting with "Impersonations: Scott Greiger" in 2007, then "Bobby Ross: Drawings" in 2010, the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art began a tradition of presenting ideas and objects that stimulate discussion, challenge the audience, encourage open-mindedness and expand perspectives.
