Hamas Controlled Televised News Media: Counter- Peace, Allen Gnanam
Hamas Controlled Televised News Media: Counter- Peace, Allen Gnanam
Allen Gnanam
The hegemonic force of Hamas censored televised news media in Gaza, can not be fully comprehended and appreciated without recognizing the role of propaganda, censorship, and the historical context of the middle east. These 3 interrelated dimensions will be analyzed using functionalism, the mass society theory, the dominant ideology framework, the critical criminology framework, and the symbolic interactionist framework. Through censorship, Hamas news media outlets were able to unilaterally inject culturally relevant propaganda, into the minds of children and citizens. The hypodermic syringe model can be applied to the state controlled news media situation in Gaza, as the people of …

Summary: Israeli- Palestinian Ethnic Conflict, Allen Gnanam
Allen Gnanam
The Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict will continue to escalate throughout both the short term and long term world future. The current and future animosity between both ethnic groups can be attributed to (a) history based accounts and religious tensions, (b) polarizing ideologies held by both sides, and (c) middle eastern resentment toward the Jewish state of Israel. History based accounts will refer to both biased historical accounts and factual historical events that have contributed to the Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict. Concepts such as ethnicity, nationalism, ideology, Palestinians, Israeli’s, Arabs, and religion will be conceptualized in the research paper.
The Ethical Trade In Cultural Property: Ethics And Law In The Antiquity Auction Industry, Kimberly L. Alderman
The Ethical Trade In Cultural Property: Ethics And Law In The Antiquity Auction Industry, Kimberly L. Alderman
Kimberly L. Alderman
This article considers from an ethical perspective the role that auction houses play as facilitators of the illicit antiquity trade. It reviews the laws that regulate the antiquity auction industry and explains why they fail to prevent the trade in illegally excavated and exported cultural property. The article argues that auction houses should develop policies focused on ethics instead of regulatory compliance, explains why this would better further cultural preservation interests and protect creator cultures, and looks at potential business benefits of an ethical model.

Chapter 01: Anthropology Of Law As A Science - Prefatory Materials, Wolfgang Fikentscher
Wolfgang Fikentscher
Inclusive online updates jan10. Chapter 1 redefines the position of legal anthropology within the social sciences. A new definition of law for anthropological purposes is sought, and in this context authority as an indispensable conceptional element of law is discussed in a new light. The relationship of law and justice will appear in a new light. Legal pluralism willo show two separable dimensions. Among the social science aspects of anthropology, empirical thinking and guidance by models are being contrasted and related to Pre-socratic, Platonic and Kantian epistemology.

War And Social Life In Prehispanic Peru: Ritual, Defense, And Communities At The Fortress Of Acaray, Huaura Valley, Margaret Brown Vega
War And Social Life In Prehispanic Peru: Ritual, Defense, And Communities At The Fortress Of Acaray, Huaura Valley, Margaret Brown Vega
Margaret Brown Vega
This is a study of ritual, war, and how those frame the construction of communities. Excavations at the fortress of Acaray in the Huaura Valley, Perú yielded evidence for conflict and ritual activities associated with two major time periods: the Early Horizon (ca. 900-200 B.C.) and the Late Intermediate Period (ca. A.D. 1000-1476). Using site survey and excavation data, a geographic information system to perform spatial analysis, and data on regional contexts this study demonstrates that Acaray was simultaneously a place constructed with defense in mind, and a locale for ritual activities linked to the strengthening of social bonds and …

Subsequent to the controversial case of Yunusa v Adesubokan (1971) where Supreme Court which held that a Muslim can make will under the Wills Act even if the terms of the will are inconsistent with inheritance laws under Islamic law, the Wills Act and the various State Wills Laws were amended by making them subject to Islamic law and customary law. While the amendments have been upheld severally by the Supreme Court in relation to customary law, the Court of Appeal case of Ajibaiye v Ajibaiye (2007) is the first reported case in relation to Islamic law. Mr. Dadem in …

Political Liberalism And Public Reason, Mario Šilar
Political Liberalism And Public Reason, Mario Šilar
Mario Šilar
The paper explores John Rawls´s idea of public reason, as reflected in Political Liberalism and The Idea of Public Reason Revisited. In Rawls’s later works, public reason acquires fundamental significance as a criterion by which the principles to be assumed from the outset in a theory of political justice may be determined. The starting-point for Rawls´s theory -the idea of citizens as free and equal reveals- that this abstraction falls short of an authentic conception of human beings as social by nature. A brief study of key issues concerning marriage and the family shows the difficulties that underlie this question. …

Evaluating Community Archaeology In The Uk, Faye Simpson, Howard M. R. Williams
Evaluating Community Archaeology In The Uk, Faye Simpson, Howard M. R. Williams
Howard M. R. Williams
Does community archaeology work? In the UK over the last decade, there has been a boom in projects utilising the popular phrase ‘community archaeology’. These projects can take many different forms and have ranged from the public face of research and developer-funded programmes to projects run by museums, archaeological units, universities, and archaeological societies. Community archaeology also encapsulates those projects run by communities themselves or in dialogue between ‘professional’ and ‘amateur’ groups and individuals. Many of these projects are driven by a desire for archaeology to meet a range of perceived educational and social values in bringing about knowledge and …

A Viking Boat Grave With Gaming Pieces Excavated At Skamby, Östergötland, Sweden, Martin Rundkvist, Howard M. R. Williams
Howard M. R. Williams
In the summer of 2005 the authors directed the excavation of a flat stone setting with a boat-shaped central depression at Skamby, Kuddby parish, Östergötland, Sweden. The stone setting covered a small and poorly preserved boat inhumation, dated by the artefacts recovered to the early Viking period (9th century ad). This is the first excavation of a boat inhumation in the province of Östergötland. The paper reports on the excavations including the discovery of an exceptional collection of 23 amber gaming pieces, which provide a new perspective on Viking-period gaming. The data from this boat grave are considered in relation …
Anglo-Saxonism And Victorian Archaeology: William Wylie’S Fairford Graves, Howard M. R. Williams
Anglo-Saxonism And Victorian Archaeology: William Wylie’S Fairford Graves, Howard M. R. Williams
Howard M. R. Williams
William Wylie’s Fairford Graves is prominent among a series of publications dating from the mid-nineteenth century reporting the discovery of early medieval cemeteries and defining their national and racial significance for English history. This paper discusses interpretative themes in Wylie’s text and images. It is argued that Fairford Graves was more than a set of descriptive observations upon the excavations and finds. The paper shows how Fairford Graves was a statement about Wylie’s identity as well as the imagined Teutonic origins of the English. Seen in this light, the investigation, interpretation and publication of the early medieval burials from Fairford …

China- Tibet Conflict, Allen Gnanam
China- Tibet Conflict, Allen Gnanam
Allen Gnanam
China- Tibet tensions are continually growing, as Tibetans are protesting for total independence from China, despite condemnation from their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who is only seeking a sense of autonomy for Tibet (Sinder, 2008). As Tibetan protests are becoming violent and aggressive, the Dalai Lama has also threatened to resign as Tibet’s government in exile (Sinder, 2008), however, his rhetoric is not being exposed to the Tibetan people, due to government censorship in China. Therefore the Dalai Lama, an exiled institutional entrepreneur, has to find new methods that will enable his influential message, to be received by the …

Documenting The Wooden Stick Lighter/Deck Scow Maricopa: A Vestige Of The Lighterage Era In The Port Of New York, Megan E. Springate
Megan E. Springate
In 2005, Richard Grubb & Associates mitigated the wreck of a wooden deck scow (an unpowered barge), abandoned in the Arthur Kill at Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, NJ. Built in 1923, the stick lighter MARICOPA was later converted to a deck scow. She served her entire career in New York Harbor, part of the large fleet of largely undocumented lighterage vessels that was critical to the area’s economy throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This discussion will include the MARICOPA’s mitigation, her role in the history of the area and the concept of significance applied to these vessel types.

Digging For The Dead: Archaeological Practice As Mortuary Commemoration,, Howard M. R. Williams, Elizabeth Williams
Howard M. R. Williams
Archaeologists have yet to fully appreciate the complex interactions between archaeological practice and contemporary responses towards death and commemoration in the UK. The paper reflects upon the experience of working with the local community during archaeological fieldwork in and around an English country churchyard at Stokenham in the South Hams district of Devon in southwest England during 2005 and 2006. Using this case study, it is argued that the current theories and parameters of both mortuary archaeology and public archaeology fail to adequately engage with the diverse community perceptions and concerns over mortality and commemoration. At Stokenham, the archaeological research …
